Summary: I loved it!
Review: A charming and humorous read. The author is great at scene setting and characterization. The protagonist, Queenie, is a plus size, very proud woman looking for love in all the wrong places and using the wrong 'moves'. The author's main message that the shell or one's outside appearance is not as important as what's in the soul, is well stated. Bravo Debra!

Summary: Funky Chick Lit Fun!
Review: Heroine: very tall, abundant

Mississippi-born, Compton-bred, and now based in upscale Cerritos, Miss Queenisha Renae Sutton is doing very well for herself as a buyer for Macy's. But she'd like more going on in her personal life. For starters, how about finally meeting a man worthy of being with her?

Lured by her best friend, self-styled voodoo priestess Poetta, to a charity bachelor auction with promises of meeting the delicious Billy Dee Williams, Queenie winds up instead buying a date with drop-dead gorgeous Denzel-look-alike Zeke Washington. However the auction's promised single outing with him isn't enough for Queenie; she's made up her mind that she wants this man for good.

But dating the super-fine Zeke comes with a price even heftier than the $1250 check Queenie cut for the pleasure of his company. The question is: is he worth it?

What worked for me:

I would love to have friends like Queenie and Poe. They'd certainly make my life more interesting! Queenie was a riot and it was fun living in her head, but at the same time it was hard not to try and be her conscience and yell at her when she was about to do something she really shouldn't.

It was very easy to visualize the story's colorful, well-defined cast of characters. It wouldn't surprise me to one day see it at the cinema with luscious, lovely Latifah in the lead role.

Size-wise Queenie was very tall and quite bountiful; so don't judge this book by its cover, it does not do justice to Queenie's statuesque build.

What didn't work for me:

The story is in first person point of view and I was thrown off a bit at first when Queenie would switch from her casual dialogue to a more formal-sounding narration. But eventually I got used to it and began to relish the rich prose.

Some of the unexpected twists in this story were maybe a bit too twisted and over-the-top for my personal taste, but they still earn points just for being so unpredictable.

Overall:

"The High Price of a Good man" is sassy fun; a well-written multi-cultural novel which might also appeal to fans of Chick Lit and romance. Be sure to grab a copy this summer to take to the beach!

Warning: this book features some coarse language, weight-loss, and occult and sexual scenarios.

If you liked "The High Price of a Good Man" you might also enjoy "Good in Bed", "Commitments", "Living Large", or "Jemima J.".

Summary: Two Snaps And A Bag Of Chips!!!
Review: I loved this book!!! The main character reminded me of my best friend Pam, (spirited, funny, and in a room full of good men, she'd find the ONE who's a wife beater, behind on his child support, jobless and an ex con), the best friend reminded me of......well me, (a little spiritual and a LOT crazy), and Raymo, (the male lead), reminded me of another good friend Dave; who, after loving a mutual friend for 3 long years, FINALLY got the woman of his dreams!!! Isn't life like that? This book reminded me of real LIFE, (well except for the part with the monkey and the part with the snakes, but....you have to read it to find out what I'm talking about!). Sometimes, like the main character Queenisha, we think we know everything thing there is to know and can't nobody tell us anything differently; isn't it a wonderful surprise when we're wrong?! Isn't it awful how sometimes we can see other's faults, but fail to see our own? Why is it that our best friends can see our wrong turns but can't see that they're driving down a dead end street themselves? Congratulation Ms. Phillips! This book is great!! Anyone who reads this book will see pieces of themselves and a few of their friends within these pages....well except for the monkey and the snakes and stuff.....but you have to read it to find out what I'm talking about!!

Summary: Snappy, Laugh Out Loud Funny,
Review: I loved this book, It was just what i needed. It had me laughing and almost crying!. Although the story was funny it touches on a few serious topics. She meets a man who she thinks is the perfect man, until she almost died from the diet pills he gave her. And the man who truely adored her she kept giving him the stop at the hand. But when she collapsed on the floor he was the only and the first one there to save her. Makes you think, that guy who you think goes over the top to get your attention just might be worthy of it. The book was full of snappy lines, It had a hold of me all through it. And yes there was a great lesson to be learned. Outstanding story. And the The High Price Of A Good Man Calculator at the end of the book just adds to it's charm.

Summary: Entertaining, witty, and honest.
Review: I really liked "The High Price of a Good Man." It was a little wordy and slow reading in the beginning but once we met Sweet Willie things picked up. Women "big or small" can appreciate the humor and camaraderie between these characters. I found the story entertaining and the situations painfully true. I admire the honesty, the wit and humor applied to the topics of friendship, love, self-esteem, and weight. We have to love ourselves before we can love anyone else!

Summary: Great summer nove!
Review: I won't repeat the aspects of the plot. You can read that in the editorial review. If you looking for humor, marvelously developed characters, great plots and sub-plots, then read Debra's book. She's take a full-figured gal, Queenisha, and gives her a very interesting and event-filled story: upbeats and downbeats; confidence and insecurity; heartbeats and heart-breaks; unusual human and animal friends and acqaintances, a fine, less-than-perfect suitor and a not-so-fine, but perfect romantic suitor. Which man will Queenisha choose? Read the book and find out! Need a little humor, romance, and drama in your summer reading selection? Then, THE HIGH PRICE OF A GOOD MAN is the book for you.

Summary: Looking for love in all the wrong places
Review: In Debra Phillips' latest, California resident Queenie is a plus-sized diva working as a buyer for a major department store. In her mind's eye, her size has never been something she was ashamed of; rather, it was something she embraced and flaunted. Her co-worker and peer, Raymo, embraces Queenie and her voluptuous frame as well, bringing her homemade food and flowers on a regular basis. But Queenie can't be bothered with Raymo; he reminds her too much of her past.

Queenie's eccentric best friend, Poetta, talks her into attending a benefit auction and the wares up for bid are dates with celebrity look-alikes. Queenie is bored and antsy until Zeke, a Denzel dead-ringer, is placed up for bid. Queenie sets out on a mission to win not only the bid for a date with Zeke, but also his long term affections.

THE HIGH PRICE OF A GOOD MAN is a convivial read, abounding with Queenie's and Poetta's antics. As Queenie narrates much of the tale, we become deeply aquainted with both her voice and her personality. There were a few moments where I said "Ohmygawd" out loud, to quote Queenie and express my amazement at the shenanigans in which she partook to find out just how high THE HIGH PRICE OF A GOOD MAN was. I openly encourage those looking for a jovially moral-based story to pick up this book.
