Summary: Just Wasn't Interesting....
Review: Again, Susan King writes a loves story to enchant us! I enjoyed this book. Gawain is a true hero, a genuinely great guy. He isn't overly macho like most leading men, he is caring, loving, and damned sexy without being a brute. Juliana is a terrific mate for him, the true swan maiden. I must agree with another reviewer, reading Laird of the Wind would help with the hero's background but you will still understand the story, i read it afterward and didn't enjoy Swan Maiden any less. I also LOVED the Sword Maiden and I am now reading the Stone Maiden. What will i do when this book is finished... find another Susan King book!

Summary: A little slow
Review: Average romance novel, but a great historical accounting of the conflict between England and Scotland during the late 13th century.

I was really disappointed in this book because the plot had so much potential, and the characters were truly likeable. The novel had all the right elements, but the writing itself never captured my interest. I found the book slow and plodding with very little energy, emotion or excitement. It worth a read if you want to learn some interesting Scottish legends, history and folklore, but pass if you want a lively romance novel.

Summary: THe Swan Maiden
Review: Come and meet the Scottish rebel Lady Juliana Lindsey and an English Knight who was borned in Scotland, Gawain Avenel. A great story by Susan King. This is the 2nd book I read by her, the first one is The Stone Maiden. I came across King's books quite by accident and I am happy to say that I found them very entertaining.. this book is a keeper! I am looking forward to her next book..

Summary: Magical and Mesmerizing
Review: I don't normally read romances, but I'm so glad I picked this one up! Susan King is an excellent writer with a good grasp of both history and ancient Celtic folklore. Her heroine is strong and independent, and her hero is honorable and admirable. She writes with feeling and the reader easily sympathizes with her characters' plights. Walter De Soulis is a believably wicked villain, and the corrupt nature of King Edward I's court is depicted extremely well. Susan King has definitely earned herself a new fan. I'm interested to read her novel "Laird of the Wind" now to get the "backstory" behind Sir Gawain.

Summary: The 2nd Maiden Book
Review: I found this book wonderfully written. Again Susan King shows her strong writing ability to incorporate historical facts and culture with romance. The character development of Gawain Avenel and Juliana Lindsey were not cliche and added meaning to a well written plot. I look forward to her third "Maiden" book.

Summary: Just Wasn't Interesting....
Review: I guess some books click with readers while others don't. As much as I loved THE STONE MAIDEN, and WAKING THE PRINCESS (her 2 best works) I found this book to be SO boring. S.K. has given us dull spots before in novels but they are often saved by the characters, but not in this case. The entire book was dull. I tried and tried to get into this book in deference to the author but it never drew my interest. This one dragged AND was boring. (Sorry)

Summary: Historically great but lacking fire
Review: I love historicals and I am a big fan of Susan King. She writes excellent, Scottish sagas. But this one just seemed so by the numbers. It is crafted with an interesting premise, just seems take forever to get there. As usual she is historically detailed in her writing, bringing the period alive. But she makes too many references to the Stone Maiden, clearly to force you to buy that book. A trilogy, as this is set up, should lure the reader to want to buy the others in the series, not ram it down their throat. She does this time and again. Frankly, GOOD story telling will encourage me to continue with a series, not vague hints and references that someone not having read Stone Maiden will have no idea what she is talking about. She uses the nowhere references to the first novel to justify what is happen with the male lead. But to someone without the background of the first book, this explains nothing! The marks of well crafted series is that each one of the books stands ALONE, but propped up by the others in the set. This one fails that test.

The characters never really do more than walk through the paces. Interesting creations with so LITTLE to do.

I gave up in the final 50 pages not really caring how the book ended. Doubt I will buy Sword Maiden when it comes out later this year, if King continues in this style. She is a great writer but seems to be pushing herself to churn out another book instead of writing from the heart.
