Summary: Do not buy this book!!!
Review: Do not buy this book unless you like the idea of wasting your money. This was probably one of the worst books I have ever read. I was really excited about it when I purchased it but now I regret the time I spent reading. The characters have no depth and the language is nothing but annoying. Take my advice and pass this one over.

Summary: You will want to read this again and again
Review: Hats off to J. J. Murray. I started reading Something Real in the beauty salon and was laughing so hard tears were streaming down my cheeks. The other patrons were turning their heads and coming out from under their dryers to find out what I was reading. I was amazed to find out that J. J. was a white male writing from a black woman's perspective. He captures the "stuff" that goes on in the Black Church and develops characters that you either identify with or think you know personally. Ruth's self-esteem is at an all time low as her no-preachin', adulterous husband, Reverend "Bor-um', puts her through hell and tries to get her kicked out of the Church she grew up in. Tee and Mr. Dee make you want to hug them for all they've been through in their young lives; and Dewey--what woman would not love a man who builds her a Church?

I don't want to give away the story. This is a must read. It will have you laughing, crying, and cheering. I look forward to Mr. Murray's next "work of art".

Summary: Still Reading It
Review: I am still reading this book but it's kind of depressing the way she is being taken advantage of. And the cover makes it look like she and the guy are just a little pudgy according to the book she is "Oprah in the early 90's big" and the guy is John Goodman from Roseanne.

Summary: Bravo!
Review: I applaud JJ Murray! He has out done himself! I can't believe a man wrote this book...from a Black women's perspective. This book is about race issues, love, life, family, church life, neighborhoods and so much more! Something Real is funny and rings true. Buy this book! (Also by JJ Murray: Renee and Jay)

Summary: One of the worst books ever!
Review: I just can not find one good comment to make about this book.

Summary: This is one the best Interracial romances ever written.
Review: I love this author and book because they offer an insight to intteracial romances that come off as very real. No pun intended. I love these type of books because they are few and far bettween. I hope to read more books by J.J. Murray.

Summary: Great Read
Review: I loved this book. It's real and brings out that all people have flaws. I don't know if it was meant to be a love story or a story of a woman's struggle but it fulfilled both charactersitics. Many women can also relate to the main character (Ruth) because of her physical appearance, character, and state in society. For once it's not just some skinny, rich, young girl with an attitude. It's about time. I have never read by J.J. Murray before this book and if the others are like this then i will be sure to read those as well!!

Summary: Something Real Was Great!!
Review: I must say the reviews definitely swayed my decision on whether I should purchase this book or not. And I am glad I did! From the beginning the writer had me hooked on "Penny" the character of the book. She was funny and real as any other heroine in a novel. My friend had recommended this as well. I must say that JJ Murray is a great writer. I laughed, I cried, and I had a ball. The wedding night one word...Hilarious. The segment where poor Penny got "sick" I was rolling on the floor laughing. And with all of this going on JJ Murray brought us an interracial romance that I will remember forever. I passed this book on to a relative who kept calling and laughing in my ear. With a great storyline and cast of characters that bring emotions out of you. Three words for any doubtful customer comes to mind. Buy the book!

Summary: very funny and very real!!!
Review: i read the reviews for the author's first book and was somewhat hesitant to purchase 'Something Real'...but i am so glad i did!

i loved this book...Ruth's character made me laugh out loud! i could almost see myself sitting across the street from her tiny apartment and watching her story unfold right before my eyes.

although Dewey's character seems reserved at first, i could tell there was a fire within him. but did he always have a penchant for the 'sistas'? first Tiffany, then Ruth? but Mr. Murray does a good job of showing that when you love someone, race becomes irrevelant when you have other things such as a family, career, and just plain living to keep you occupied!

Ruth's borderline 'trashy' mouth might have offended some, but i know i have had some of the same thoughts about some folks i know! she's a good person, who loves those around her, and once she starts to turn that same love inward...there's no stopping her.

we all have some type of prejudice within us...whether it's toward a person, a place you visited or heard about. it's the fear of the unknown that makes us shy away...read this book and then look at yourself FOR REAL...you might see that it's time to put away a lot of what you've been holding onto(that might be holding you back)

thanks for a sweet love story and i know i got the message...hopefully everyone else will too

Summary: Endearing, funny, a wonderful read.
Review: I read this book in one sitting - it was just that good. I found it interesting to find a male author speaking through a female character, but it added a new, different dimension to the story and plot. Ruth was the figure, she was the speaker, and she was the focus. Her journies - emotional, physical, and those in between were a trip to ride along but it put a smile on my face and kept me wanting more even after the last page was turned.
