Rating: Summary: In the fullness of time ................... Review: The book is a contemporary study in the cultural and personal revolution that society is experiencing. The world is brought from a macro perspective down to its essence, through Channer's characters and their and our eternal struggle. It is life at its lyrical best, it gives its characters the space and ability to expand and contract as we all do as we travel life's elastic continuum. The thoughtfulness of Colin and his humor help us to look at and understand ourselves and those we love or wish to love without judjment . I have also read the book twice, each time was an adventure, a discovery. I believe that we must support our creative people and have bought the book for others to enjoy. Today, as I reflect once a gain on this well crafted book, I say CARPE DIEM! All The Best to you , Colin Channer, and may the gods grant you all that you wish...in the fullness of time.

Rating: Summary: Delightful unexpected fiery & complex jewel I stumbled into. Review: I "stumbled" across this book while "aimlessly" book shopping with no list of "must reads" or fabulously reviewed books at hand. I'd not expected much from title, summary & cover -- had expected at most a light-hearted trashy and fun read. Instead I was fascinated as the story unfolded and surprised that I'd not yet heard of the writer (I purchased in September of '98). I experienced that excitement that you feel when you feel you "discovered" the next musical "hit" . . . a unique international food find/spice . . . an intoxicating new and unheard of fragrance. Surprisingly I was enthralled with the love story-- that wasn't a love or relationship story -- since normally I detest/loathe such fanciful, fictional fairy tales. The writing style was . . .well, I feel disadvantaged with no words to adequately capture the poetry -- with seemingly jazz-inspired variations/improvisations on the theme(s). The characters, richly complex, interesting -- were folks I felt like I would have hung with, have hung with . . . or wanted to. Fire . . . Fire, is . . .was. . . my fantasy -- a complex Man of depth, diversity, strength and tenderness . . . a bright man you feel would be equally conversant with princes & paupers . . . Rhodes scholars and primary school drop-outs. A likable, intuitive, sensitive and passionate man free to be . . . and let his friends and love interest be . . .all things . . .& nothing . . .Fire is a fantasy indeed. The revelations of the complexity of life, passion, artistic sensitivities, life, relationships, friendships, loyalties, family & family influences were intricately woven into this love story. I regret that I'd forwarded my much loved, thrice-read, and highlighted book in a "fit of passion" to One I thought understood . . . intuitively . . .implicitly. I'll replace my book soon . . . and look to hear more from this gifted writer . . . lucky?
Rating: Summary: A great piece of work by a new author. Review: I began reading Waiting in Vain and could hardly stop until I had read this magnificant book from cover to cover. Channer makes the characters in the book come alive with his writing. He literally paints a picture with his words that makes one visually see the character as if they were standing in front of them. His choice of words flows like a stream. His characters were not just fictional, they had qualities that one could easily relate to no matter what thier ethnic bacground or gender maybe. Channer takes us to many different places (New York, London, Jamaica) and sets the stage for what is a romance, mystery and drama all packed in one book. He creates positive images of the characters even though they all have their flaws. Most of all his story let's one know that they must always follow their dreams be it in their personal or professional lives. Way to go Channer! Thanks for sparking the FIRE in my eyes. I can't wait for the next novel. How about a sequel?
Rating: Summary: Fire ....Fire ...Where are you at????? Review: Without a Doubt the best book I've read in a long long time. I carried it everywhere, stole a glance in traffic, on the train, on my lunch breaks etc....then realizing the end was near, I forced myself to slow the pace down... to savour further!A definite must-read, evokes and explores the issues of denial, ego and super-ego battles, life in this crazed world, confusion, possibilities, dreams, love and reality... it left me breathless and gasping for more...I could relate for once in a long time! I must have recommended it to all who crossed my path!!!!! You Go "Channer"!!!!!
Rating: Summary: what a book..so much passion..I could fall for "Fire" Review: Colin Channer writes with such passion and reality I feel as if some parts of me were showing ...
Rating: Summary: Thanks Colin! I am desperately waiting for your next book! Review: Colin Channer awakes me by refreshing my memories on a culture as I remember it with all the passion and excitement I yearn for. After reading this book, I have decided to explore my inward passion and talent of words by writing poetry again. Thanks Colin for inspiring me!
Rating: Summary: WONDERFUL! Review: I started this book and found it hard to beleive that this was a first novel. The descriptions, the metaphors, the inside their head characterization just blew me away and had me thinking "who is this Colin Channer and how soon before his next one comes out?" As an avid reader(and writer) I'm always in search of the next best thing. Well Colin had hit his mark with me and I look forward to his next works. Anytime a book has me acting like I'm in the amen corner, then they have hit their mark and Waiting In Vain had me doing just that! Margaret Johnson-Hodge
Rating: Summary: I LOVED IT!!! Review: WHAT A WONDERFUL DEBUT. FIRE, IS A GEM. SYLVIA, EXACTLY LIKE THE REST OF US "WANNA BEES". THAT SOUNDS NEGATIVE, BUT IS NOT MEANT TO BE SO. AT ANY RATE, I FINISHED THIS BOOK AND IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO READ IT AGAIN. THE ONLY NEGATIVE I HAD OF THIS ENTIRE READING WAS THAT I KNEW THE OUTCOME OF IAN VERY, VERY, EARLY INTO THE READING. MR. COLIN CHANNER . . . . . . YOU DID GOOD!!!!! PLEASE BLESS US WITH ANOTHER WORK OF ART SOON.
Rating: Summary: Second Time Around Review: I just finished reading this story for the second time and have found myself even more impressed than the first. Instead of a quick fix of Hagan Daz double chocolate fudge ice-cream, I chose to indulge in the lush deliciousness of Colin Channer's Waiting In Vain. Every line, every page is filled with sensous highs and solicitious lows that take you places you only dare fantasize.
