Rating: Summary: Excellent summer read!! Review: I recently just finished reading 'Waiting in Vain' in two days! The book is a great read and it's one that you can't put down because you can't wait to see what will happen next! The characters Fire and Sylvia are very believable and so in touch with reality. As a reader you can truly feel their emotions...hurt, friendship, anguish and love. To me Fire is a very wise human being...he may have money and be rich in a materialistic way but he knows that true wealth is in his music, books, friends and LOVE!! Looking forward to Colin's next book!!!
Rating: Summary: WOW--Jamaica Here I come! Review: What a wonderful book! Mr. Channer's descriptions of Jamaica, Brooklyn and England are beautiful. I loved all the characters--all human with flaws. Yes, even Fire had flaws. He was insecure. The Jamaican dialect was difficult at first, but after a while it just flowed. I can't wait for the next novel!
Rating: Summary: "Waiting In Vain" delights, disturbs, engulfs. It's wonderful Review: I couldn't put it down!!! "Waiting In Vain" was the best thing that happened to me last December. Through his book, Author, Colin Channer gave a complimentary tour of emotions, relationships, life styles and truth-seeking which I, and many others will probably never experience again. The characters and situations are very real and with Channer's remarkable use of his gift of writing, one is hypnotised by the storyline and many moods of the characters in this sensual, graphic and strong novel. "FIRE" has won my heart - "Sylvia", you've come a long way.
Rating: Summary: Thourgt provoking, sensual and captivating!!! Review: This book affected me intensely. As soon as I finished the book the first time, I went back and re-read all the "really good parts". Colin Channer has a very unique, honest and effective way of expressing the twist and turns in relationships between men and women. The protagonist, Fire, is an intellegent, confident and kind Jamaican gentleman who any woman could fall for. The target of Fire's affections, Sylvia, seemes to have sold out for the comforts of an American lifestyle, yet Fire never lost sight of his own fundamental values even as he pursues a woman who did not seem to share those values (initially). Channer honestly expressed what was going on in each character's mind. The love scenes are (without exaggeration) the most intense and gentle scenes that I have ever read about. I wondered if Channer was describing fiction or borrowing from his own expreriences. As a Nigerian, I fully related to Fire's reasons and desire to live in his homeland (Jamaica) instead of dealing with the evils of rascism in America. I thank Channer for crafting such a thought provoking and entertaining book; I hope he writes another romantic novel soon.
Rating: Summary: FABULOUS! A must read!!!! Review: The craftsmanship and artistry of the descriptions that Colin Channer infused into this novel are beyond compare. His delicate and complex handling of inner emotions within a myriad of individuals demonstrates both mastery and sensitivity. This is a must read, and a work of art to cherish and keep in one's private collection!
Rating: Summary: A wonderful mix of emotions. I hated to put it down Review: Waiting in Vain is a passionate story of evolving friendships, love, and being true to yourself. As I read, it stirred the most wonderful mix of emotions in me. When I closed the book I had a smile not only on my lips but in my heart. I love when you read a book for entertainment and you come away with something special "In the fullness of time"
Rating: Summary: i couldn't put it down, it was that good. Review: the story was not only great, it was positive and uplifting and it got me to thinking about what is important to me. the style and the description were also great, very easy to read and visualize. i could relate to the characters, infact i felt like i was with them every step of the way. i read the book from cover to cover without a break even to sleep because i just had to know how the story would turn out, and it was well worth it. i hope mr channer will not only continue to write but i hope book #2 will be out very soon.
Rating: Summary: It's what we all have been waiting for. Review: I truly enjoyed reading Waiting in Vain. The characters came alive in the most subtle yet exciting ways. Sensual yet tasteful, I found myself falling for Fire much as did Sylvia. I also saw Jamaica as I have never seen her before, through the eyes of the coloful characters Mr. Channer paints for us. Writing of this caliber is rare indeed. I'll be reading Colin Channer for years to come.
Rating: Summary: Thanks to Channer, nothing I'll ever do will be in vain Review: I was actually reluctant to buy this book because the reviews that I came across depicted it (solely) as a love story. I feel that I'm at a really pivotal point in my life and instead of reading a sappy love story, I wanted to read something spiritually uplifting. I wanted to read something that would help me focus so that I could decide who I really want to be. When I got to the book store, there was a huge sign that read "sold out" above the advertisement for "Waiting in Vain." That's when I told myself that if I ever came across it, i'd read it - but that it would be my last romance novel for awhile. When I finally found a novel by Chinua Achebe that I'd read some years ago, I bent over to pick it up and guess what was sitting right next to it... a paperback copy of "Waiting in Vain." Needless to say, I bought it, I loved it, and it was much, much more than I could've expected and/or hoped for. This book was personal for me in many ways and I just want to say thank you, Colin. Thank you for sharing...
