Rating: Summary: I thoroughly enjoyed Waiting in Vain! Review: Waiting in Vain was a fantastic book. I enjoyed the romantic story, as well as the suspensfulness. You never knew what would happen next. You could relate to the characters, very real life. It is one of those books you hate you have to close -- you want to read it from beginning to end in one sitting. I am awaiting Mr. Channer's next book.
Rating: Summary: Honest, Sensual, Reflective Review: As a Black Man, I must say "Thank You" to Colin Channer for a book about us in love! This is not a just a love story it is a LIFE STORY. It deals honestly with how we deal with our past, friends, family and job. Not many books show us in real relationships and how the search for love can strenghten and weaken us. Fire's journey is something most men can remember well. We all go through the storms in life. Sylvia is like the friend we all have; that's caught up with a job while losing herself. The book was a exotic vacation, a jazz record and a passion filled night with my wife. I am buying more copies and giving them out as a must read. I had to read it again because the book is Hot.

Rating: Summary: A MUST READ FOR WEST INDIANS AND AFRICAN-AMERICANS Review: I enjoyed it thoroughly. I read this book in 10 hours. The character Fire is a sensitive, no nonsense, knows what he is about kind of guy, who portrays a magnificent lover. Black men are portrayed in a very positive light and Fire is an example of the Man of the Millennium. Channer uses very descriptive writing similiar to a poet which is very sensual and scintillating. For Jamaicans especially, our culture is beautifully displayed not in the kind of touristic, white sand beaches, all-inclusive resorts only kind of way, but in the true reggae vibe which transcends through our people. This is not simply a soppy love story, but it is a realistic depiction of adult relationships in today's society. I am definitely looking forward to future work by Channer. BIG UP EVERYTIME!!!
Rating: Summary: A lyrical love story that is true to life Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this debut novel by Colin Channer. This is a story about a man whose passion is sparked by an unavailable woman and the fireworks that result. This is a page turning must-read that is wonderfully woven together. I am already looking forward to reading more of Colin Channer's work in the future.
Rating: Summary: A journey in honest emotions and honest sensuality Review: I dove into Fire's inner journey immediately, written with such poetic description and a sensuality that seemed naturally beautiful in the island setting and a little harsher in the crazed artsy world of New York. As a woman, it was a pleasure to be part of a man's inner journey, watching as he evolved, conscious of his weaknesses but also knowing what he really wanted. I found the New York artsy people disturbing, because it is not my lifestyle, but I loved Channer's ability to juxtapose that lifestyle against the island pace. And I loved the juxtaposition of those drug-crazed, art-crazed northern folks living life, waiting in vain for the next thing to happen while Fire steadfastly, though not without his inner pain, could remove himself back to Jamaica to wait -- not in vain. The Patois was a little difficult in the beginning, but by the end of the book, I was wrapped in the rhythm of the tongue and Fire's heart journey. Beautiful writing. It was fun, it was disturbing, it was so close to home at times. Wonderful!
Rating: Summary: Fabulous! Outstanding! Magnificent! Review: There aren't enough words to describe the joy and pleasure I experienced while reading this book. The characters were so vivid and real, unlike the usual "girlfriend/boyfriend" dramas that I had simply grown tired of. Colin Channer showed us our good and bad selves, using such grit and finesse you are amazed that this is his first novel. His approach to the entire "class" issue was EXCELLENT, prompting us to take a closer look at the real reasons behind our existing relationships (professional and social) and the values they ultimately reflect. Bravo, Colin, and don't let us "wait in vain" for your next masterpiece!
Rating: Summary: A story so hot the pages will scorch your fingers. Review: If you've ever wondered whether the love of your life is the man or woman in your life, Channer helps you focus. This international tale of love, friendship, lust, ambition, and dreams deferred is a must read. It touched every nerve and fiber in my being. I couldn't put it down unitil I finished it and was sorry to see it come to an end. I wanted more and then some. I enjoyed the paperback so much I searched until I found a hardback edition. Now, I can keep this treasure preserved forever. Thank you Colin for creating "Fire," a strong, courageous Jamaican hero.
