Rating: Summary: Wonderful, passionate, consuming, spicy, culturally eclectic Review: This is a book that is clearly written by someone who has lived the sounds, smells and the social and political environment that is being captured. In the context of globalisation today, this book moves excellently between Kingston, Jamaica, New York and London. It deals in a most interesting and subtle manner with the issues of diaspora and migration, inter-cultural intercourse, and most of all romance. The characters are brought to life in a most compelling manner. They are your neighbour, but yet exceptional. They are you, yet not quite. The book for me also raised some important political questions without waiving flags and banners in a crude manner. Thank you Channer for a great read. My best of 1999.
Rating: Summary: The most well written book I have read in a long time! Review: This book made me remember how beautiful the English language can be when the words are so well put together. Mr. Channer's use of metaphors was astounding and made me look at the simple things in life in ways I would have never thought. I went through the entire gamut of emotions possible reading the lives of his characters. As a woman, I look forward to having a man loving me as honestly, freely, and unconditionally as Fire loved. As an avid reader, I can't wait until Mr. Channer blesses us with another novel.
Rating: Summary: An excellent read!! Review: I'm ashamed to say that I'd never heard of this author. I cannot believe that this is his FIRST novel! I intend to re-read this one. He (C.Channer) takes you to another place and you'll wish that there were more gentlemen like him (Fire). However, this is not a 'chick' book. Needless to say, I'll be purchasing his next novel in hardback.
Rating: Summary: Waiting in Vain is a novel that exposes the innermost you. Review: Waiting in Vain is a novel that one should read only if they are bold enough to examine their own innermost self. Fire is the man that we pray that our daughters will marry and that we want our sons to be. Waiting in Vain was a masterpiece because it shows us that men are dynamic. They manafest their emotions through numerous venues. I applaud Fire because he had the courage to love and most importantly, show is love in so many different facets.
Rating: Summary: Erotic Nah Ras Review: Colin Channer has an exquisite and sensual command of the English lanquage. The scenes and the characters or described in such detail that the reader is thrown in to the novel. As the reader my imagination was allowed to wander into the world of Fire. As a romanticist I was completey swept up by Fire's eroticism. One Love, Colin
Rating: Summary: GREAT read, beautifully written, sense of poetry. Review: I was pleasantly surprised to find that the author had identified so well with the many young people who have crossed international boundaries and live away from a native land that is still loved and longed for. It is beautifully written, and the characters are so real...every one can identify with at least one. I can't say enough good things. For anyone who has ever doubted the lives and loves they've chosen, anyone looking for a good love story, anyone who likes a happy but realistic ending, anyone looking for a flesh and blood main character who has many good points and a few flaws, anyone who has thought of throwing off the shackles of their every day existence and following a dream...this book is a MUST!! Colin Channer has truly emerged as one of the best contemporary novelists from the Caribbean. West Indian in flavor, this book will also appeal to both men and women anywhere in the world.
Rating: Summary: Buy a copy for a friend! Review: I am no longer Waiting in Vain for a wonderful love story with characters so vivid you will never forget them. Colin Channer takes you on a literary ride that you will not want to end. You find yourself drawn into a world that may feel quite familiar whether you're West Indian or not. This book also makes you look within and reflect on your own desires and ambitions. The ending made me misty eyed and touched my heart. I plan to share my joy with others, this book will make a great Christmas gift. Thanks Colin for sharing with us "Fire" he's truly a "Natural Mystic." One Love.
Rating: Summary: Great Read! Review: This is a well written novel by Colin Channer. His discrpitive word usage allows you to paint such a vivid picture of the scenery and the characters. The telephone scene between Fire and Sylvia while she was at work was very moving. This books makes you pull out the highlighter! We're waiting on the next one Channer!
Rating: Summary: Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Review: I read this book in a couple of days, because I could just barely break the stronghold my hands had to the covers to take care of my everyday living (eat, sleep, work, etc.). It's hard to believe that this is Colin Channer's (or as I like refer to him, Literary Maestro's) first novel. He writes with the maturity of an accomplished litterateur. He eloquently paints the pages of this book as (I imagine)Leonardo painted the Mona Lisa. He has a poetic license and is not afraid to use it. This book will take you on an emotional rollercoaster, but it's well worth the ride! My advice to anyone young in age or at heart: READ THIS BOOK AT LEAST TWICE!
Rating: Summary: Very informative about Jamaican culture Review: It is a great book. The characters are people that you can relate to on a day to day basis. As a musician I must say that the character I-nelik reminded me of a cross between my friends Chinna Smith and Glen Browne, who I played with in Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. The depiction of Jamaica and Jamaican people was real, in contrast to the way they are usually portrayed in books and movies. Reading this book is an ideal introduction to Jamaican culture and Jamaican people
