Summary: waiting in vain
Review: it's not very often that one reads (or reviews) a book revealing of one's soul...where to begin?

i can't analyze the techinal components of this book for you, but i can tell you that there is a powerful mental, emotional and sexual message here for anyone who knows that true love, regardless of race, class or gender shall overcome... mind you, it's a struggle not meant for all. colin has shown me that i'm not alone in my "frivolous" notions of love.

to my people of color- you shall find a book void of streotypes and cookie cutter characters.

to my reggae people- you shall find a "natural mystic" flowing through this book.

to everyone whose ever felt incomplete in a relationship- read this book.

to colin- what's next and when can i expect it?

Summary: Deeply Romantic and True
Review: Waiting in Vain was a good novel with much depth to it. It was very romantic and filled with awe. The descriptions of the scenery and characters by Channer are the best. The two main characters could of evolved a little more though. I look forward to his next novel.

Summary: Waiting in Vain
Review: A wonderful book, such beautiful writing. Colin made me feel like I knew these characters; they practically jumped off the pages. A must read for people interested in reading stories about Caribbean people, written from our perspective. The Jamaican setting took me back to the past, making me re-live some of my childhood experiences. The use of authentic patois added to the rich flavor of the story. Yet it is quite contempory, depicting many of the experiences of West Indian immigrants to the UK and USA. I couldnt put it down and I cant wait for his next book. Irie, Colin!

Summary: Praise for Waiting in Vain
Review: Waiting in vain is a celebration of romance that takes the reader on a journey illuminating all the complexities of falling in love along the way. Colin Channer's mastery of lanuage is nothing short of brillance.

Summary: Sensational
Review: "Waiting In Vain" was simply a sensational story of love and life among worlds of individuals seeking purpose. It revealed thoughts of wanting to be in a place and in places where only dreams and vivid imaginations can go within the pages of Channer's book. "Waiting..." gave new meaning to reading with a flow...it gave feelings of flowing. Congratulations to this new writer and I certainly look forward to the next Channer book. Thanks Colin for sharing! Jamaica never looked so beautiful!

Summary: A book that looks honestly at the bonds between men too...
Review: I've never seen or heard of a book with over 250 reviews but I have to nevertheless add my voice to this mix. This is a book of great sensuality and the relationship between Fire and Sylvia will keep you reading. Still, I felt myself drawn again and again to something else in the novel that seems to get overlooked. That is Channer's honest exploration of the bonds between men -- in the relationship between Fire and Ian and Fire and his father most notably. Channer is a writer clearly of great gifts in showing the multitude of human relationships that impact our sense of self and meaning in the world. I look forward to his next works and from one Jamaican to another, I just have to say it -- "You done good, bway! You mek us proud."

Summary: I Want More
Review: This book was awesome...I couldn't put it down. While reading, I couldn't wait to find out what happened with Fire and Sylvia. Then when I got to the end I wanted more. This is a book that I will keep in my collection and read again.

Fire and Sylvia's journey showed that, anything worth having is worth the effort.

I respected Fire's attitude, he was a really down to earth person, who didn't need to brag about himself. The brother was grounded and knew who he was!

I hope that Collin's next book continues Fire and Sylvia's journey through love.

Summary: I'm On Fire!
Review: This book provides an excellent mixture of cultures, lifestyles, and languages (English and Patois). It starts as a slow read, but be patient and let patience have her perfect work, because ultimately you will not be able to put this book down!

Some passages are so exquisitely written that I found myself emailing my list of friends 3 times with excerpts about music, hip hop and infatuation. The intimacy is so vividly written you'll swear you participated with the characters.

You may need to keep a pocket Patois dictionary on hand or do an online search for some of the phrases used (someone please tell me what a "beef" and a "yute" are). But don't despair because the Patois adds to rather than detracts from the story. It would be wonderful if all authors who write of Jamaican experiences would include this realism. "Whe yuh no know bout, no chat bout."

Summary: Simply Brilliant
Review: This book was simply brilliant. Colin found a way to write a book that was so "off the beaten path". Not the average "bump & grind" type of love story.

His attention to detail is what floored me. The thorough descriptions of the hills in Kingston to the streets of Williamsburg, Bklyn, lets you know that the author is worldly and/or has done his research!

Fire and Sylvia epitomize what true love/infatuation/passion and romance are all about. They prove that since you don't get too many chances at this kind of love, it is OKAY to become so wrapped up in the "throes of passion" and have your hearts do a soul serenade that mere words would just get in the way!
