Rating: Summary: Waiting In Vain Review: This book is a MUST HAVE TO READ. It makes you feel as is you are present, with the characters in a surreal kind of way. It makes you look deep within yourself to analyze if at times you have lived the lifes the story's characters have. It makes you think on how easy it is to get caught up in your dreams and whether you pursue them or just dream about them. Colin Channer does an excellent job of taking you back in time to reminisce on your childhood and adolescent ways. He provides a vivid picturesque scenery of Jamaica and their customs, which is great considering I've never been there. Makes one want to go to Jamaica and see what it is he talks about in depth. Buy the book. YOU WON'T REGRET IT.!
Rating: Summary: My Official Favorite Book Review: It has been a long time since I have read a work of fiction that was filled with intellect, wit, and reality. I usually read for just an hour per day; however, with Mr. Channer's book, I found myself sitting down and becoming engrossed with Fire and Sylvia's lives for hours. Because of the book's content and painful honesty, I have made "Waiting in Vain" my favorite book. Yes, Mr. Channer's story line and writing skills impressed me that much. Amazingly, I've had the book in my possession since September of last year when I first bought it, but I did not get a chance to read it until now. I kick myself for not reading it earlier because, even though it was fictional, it made me look at relationships differently. What really moved me was Fire's proclamation of infatuation (p. 249 in paperback). It was beautiful. Honestly, I did not know know that men actually thought on those terms. To sum it up, Mr. Channer's book was a breath of fresh air, and I thank him for writing it.
Rating: Summary: Waiting In Vain is a classic tale Review: I just finished reading Waiting In Vain. I have never written a review before but felt compelled to praise this author's work. He has created a brilliant work of art. I was completely blown away the poetic elegance of the language, the gritty realism of the dialogue and the way he brought the characters to life. Each character was imbued with such psychological and social complexity; like real-life-human beings, yes! And he captured the real life dimensions so beautifully. I was in rapture. I am a writer and never seriously contemplated writing a story set on the stage of my own experience, emphasized from time to time in my native patois. My assumption was that no one would understand and definitely no one would publish non-standard English. So when I opened the book and read, Ms. Gita say, "Ah was only cutting up some tings", I was blown away. I will spare you an account of everything I was in awe of about the book. But, I must say that only in art (painting, sculpture, etc...) have I seen the kind of dialogue that you have displayed about the impact of race, class and gender in the United States and the West Indies. Waiting in Vain is a classic in every sense of the word because of the achingly beautiful way Colin Channer portrays the character's timeless struggles and the wisdom of life. Read this book.
Rating: Summary: A Classic Story Review: From the first page, I was drawn into the wonderful story of Fire and Sylvia and their rocky path to each other. Though many obstacles were placed in their path, their fate was each other and in the end fate prevailed. I recommend this lush, powerful read to anyone who wants their faith in true love and destiny renewed. From the hustle and bustle of New York's art world to the lush Jamaican countryside, the book will hold you spellbound as you are drawn into the world of two souls in a struggle to find each other. This book is a life changer...
Rating: Summary: Waiting In Vain Review: What an incredible novel! Adrian Heath a.k.a. "Fire" is the epitome of man! The name Fire is quite appropriate for this character because of the desires and emotions the he stirs in one's soul. Ian's character puts me in mind of a character from James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room. The supporting characters were equally enjoyable. Getting a male perspective on love is always something worth one's time. We need more male writers like Mr. Channer. Keep up the good work! I hope you're working on another book. Write on Brother, Write on!
Rating: Summary: Waiting in Vain Review: The lead male character in Waiting in Vain, made me fall in love with him. Words like romance, endearing and friendship comes to mind when describing this novel. Ah the poems, what a pleasant daydream. Wow, what a novel! Great job Colin Channer!
Rating: Summary: You must get this book Review: It's the best I have read this year. You can't live without this!
Rating: Summary: HOME RUN Review: To read Colin Channer's book, "Waiting in Vain" is to be invited into a world that mirrors the anxiety, heartache and angst we all feel as we navigate this mindfield called love. The characters are well-drawn, credible-they could be anyone we know. Channer has a mastery of language, a deft touch and an eye for detail that brings to life the Caribbean experience in America. He has produced a stunning, original work that smashes the cookie-cutter, formulaic stories that populate the "romance" "love story" genre. His is not a love story in the traditional sense, but a life story-a slice of the lives of characters who attract and repel us, who challange our perceptions of love, honesty, betrayal; and the book, by it's scope encourages those who dare to branch out on a path of discovery and daring or risk "waiting in Vain" for the life they seek to find them.
