Now in 1909, Temperance has become a major figure in the women's rights movement. However, her life changes when her mother marries Scotsman Angus McCairn. Her stepfather demands Temperance accompanies them back to Edinburgh until he finds her a husband. Angus forces Temperance's agreement by threatening to cut off her funds and tossing her out of her home.Six months later, Angus understands what his wife meant by watching out for an agreeable Temperance, who has caused trouble in the Highlands. He offers her a deal. If she can find his nephew a wife while acting as a housekeeper to the barbaric James, Angus will support her return across the Atlantic. As she tries to teach the beast how to cherish a woman, Temperance and James fall in love. However, she ultimately realizes he will never want a wife, especially a modern day woman like Temperance. TEMPTATION is an exciting historical romance that centers on the early twentieth century women's rights movement. The story line is filled with excitement, action, and insight into the plight of females. Temperance is a fine lead player and James acts more like an injured beast. The support cast augments the tale by vividly bringing to life the role of men and women in the United States in 1909. Jude Deveraux provides sub-genre fans with a non-stop thriller Harriet Klausner

Then comes The Mulberry Tree, and thought the story had a great plot. Temptation, however, was a disaster. I found the heroine to be an obnoxious brat, and the hero completely shallow. After reading a third of the book, no solid story plot could be found. Its hard to even continue with the story without finding the heroine annoying and irritating. This book has definately tainted me from reading anymore Jude Deveraux books.

How about a Scottish brogue or maybe a woman ahead of her time? With Temptation, you will get all three. Temperance O'Neil is a young woman who believes women need a way to provide for themselves rather than relying on a man. Unfortunately, her mother remarries Angus McCairn who believes women need to be taken care of and provided for by a man. To make things worse, this man expects Temperance and her mother to go with him to live in Scotland. After resettling in Scotland, Temperance becomes the model daughter and drives Angus crazy with her do-good works. To get her out of his house, Angus makes a deal with her - become a housekeeper to his nephew, James, and find him a wife. If she does so, Angus will allow her to return to New York and continue her work with under privileged women. The tale that follows is only one that Jude Deveraux can tell and she tells it very well. Don't miss this tale of romance and history. It is a story you won't want to put down until the very last word is read. I rated this book as a 10.

Review: I was beginning to think Jude Devereaux didn't have a good, funny romances left in her. But ta-da, here is Temptation, a return to the "old" style of romance and humor I loved. Sharp, believable characters. Why can't she write more like this instead of the supernatural crap she's trying to put out nowadays?
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Cute Whimsical Read! Review: Temptation is a light and fun easy read! I enjoyed this silly farfetched story that is typical of Jude's imagination. Temptation is one of approximately 25 books in the Montgomery and Taggert series
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Great Storytelling Review: This is the first Jude Deveraux novel I have read and I must say I loved every bit of it. Many parts will put a smile on your face and some parts may even cause you to let out a giggle. What suprised me the most is that this book does not have a classic ending, which I really enjoyed. The ending has a unique twist to it but still brings adequate closure to the story of Temperance and the McCairn.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: An Original Feminist Review: This was an okay story. The lead female character was something of a feminist, and not your usual dewey eyed 18 year old, rather a 30 year old career type woman ahead of her time. The setting starts off in New York City 1909 and Temperance is fighting the good fight to protect woman from abusive men. Enter her mother and new step -father who wisk her away to Scotland. It's a man's world and what was her mothers funds have now become the property of her new step father and of course, women have no rights. Not that the step-father is a bad man just a very STUBBORN Scot! Now in order for Temperance to gain her freedom and return to New York life she has to find a bride for his nephew James, the Laird of Clan McCairn. James is a hunk - plain and simple but also - a Stubborn Scot. The escapades of finding a bride that would be acceptable to James, and Temperance setting his house to rights is where most of the comic relief comes in. The romance is pretty hard to define as the attraction is there but two very stubborn people take a long time to admit to it. Just when you think you know how this all ends, you do get a curve ball thrown in. I won't spoil the story by telling you what it is though. The book is typical Jude Deveraux, perhaps not as much romance but enough of her tradmark humour to really enjoy. Very good book!
