Summary: Interesting, but not super
Review: I liked the spontaneous nature of this book. It didn't dwell on one subject too long, which kept the pace fresh. However, at times, it tended to jump around so quickly that you weren't sure exactly where you were. The characters could've been developed a little bit better, especially their ideas, thoughts, and opinions. Often, those were just thrown in at opportune times. Justine is probably the character I hated most in the book, because her motives were ill-defined and she came off like a snooty bitch (way to reinforce the stereotype of pompous lawyers!). Overall, it was fun, but I wasn't at all eager to finish it, and nothing in the book particularly surprised me. I wish I would've checked it out at the library instead of buying it.

Summary: Was it something I read?
Review: Yes, and I'm sorry I did. A promising beginning quickly trails off. I found the lead characters so unlikeable that I didn't really care if they ended up together or not. Unfortunately, it seems as though the author took the concept of "flawed characters appear more realisitc" a little too far. Despite an interesting premise, this is not a book I would recommend.

Summary: Very Enjoyable
Review: I'm pretty shocked at all the negative reviews about this book. I found it very creative and enjoyable. I liked it a lot...and, found the characters easy to like and had many fine qualities that I wanted to explore further. I found the setting to be well thought out and worked really well. All in all...a very pleasant experience.

Summary: Very Funny
Review: I enjoyed this book. I will definitely read more books written by Valerie Block. I say pretty good for a first novel.

Summary: What poor writing....
Review: Written at a 4th grade level, this book reminds me of a pilot for a really bad daytime soap opera. It does not deplict the occupations of the characters very well, nor does it accuratley portray life in New York. I felt like the author had no first-hand experience on any of the topics she covered. The book was irritating to read.

Summary: Au Contraire!
Review: I really disagree with these poor reviews! This novel is interesting and fun. I liked how it showed the various, flawed characters' perspectives on evolving, modern relationships. Yeah, Barry, Justine, Pippa, and Vince are neurotic, everyday screw-ups. But I wasn't put off or bored by this. Their pitiful stumblings toward each other are more touching than annoying. I liked this book because it didn't spoonfeed me a sugar-spun, pre-packaged story of what modern romance should be. Each of these characters desparately wants to excel and be loved. And just when he or she thinks they have or will - BOOM! - reality hits them, in the form of the loved one's dirty underwear on the bathroom floor, or unexpected, incredibly pat conservative political analysis over the dinner table. Barry's odd and ongoing musings on how the musical and tempermental differences between John Lennon and Paul McCartney bear on his current predicament are a nice touch. In sum, I heartily disagree with the one-star reviews given here and recommend you give this book a try! It's light, it's fun; I'm looking forward to reading more work by this author.

Summary: How about an option for NO STARS !
Review: Simply put....I believe this may be one of the worst mainstream books I have ever read.

It pains me to even think of this story so I'll just offer a few better recommendations instead. Try a either Watermelon or Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married by Marian Keyes for the "comic urban romance" as it should be done.

Summary: By far the worst book I've read in years.
Review: Why did amazon include this title with my recommended reading selections. It was a terrible book. Its like getting heartburn after a bad meal.

Summary: Was it something she wrote?
Review: The author is obviously a great writer, she shows style and potential, but why did she invent the most incredibly obnoxious and shallow characters I've ever read? Justine was the worst one, she's someone I wouldn't be friends with if she were real. Barry was not any better. The only decent character there was Pipa, but hardly interesting. Don't bother reading this book---read In the Drink or Otherwise Engaged instead.

Summary: One of the most unlikeable characters I've read
Review: This book is absolutely horrible. The first couple of chapters were okay---but as I went on reading, it only got worse. Justine is probably the most self-centered, unlikable character I've ever read, it made me wonder what on earth Barry saw in her to begin with, even though he wasn't any better at times.

Valerie Brock wrote a book about two shallow characters that fall in love under the most ridiculous circumstances I could read. I agree with most of the reviewers here, this book is painful, I couldn't finish it, after about four chapters left to read, I just didn't bother anymore and judging by the reviewers, I'm glad I didn't waste any more time although I did waste my money on this sorry excuse for a book.
