Rating: Summary: Compelling romantic suspense - Very highly recommended Review: A bullet leaves Jonathan Brighton a changed man. Armani suits no longer fit his personality, emotional responses shift, memories blur or are erased. Now he calls himself John and plans to return to Guardian, a computer security firm he founded. But during his six-month absence, customers no longer trust the company and friendships give way to quests for power. Worse, John cannot remember his past well enough to defend himself from accusations of murder. The only bright spot is the physical therapist provided by his insurance company. In the six years she has worked for the bureau, Kathleen "Katie" Cavanaugh has never been attracted to a target until now. Three months of desk duty following an assignment gone wrong leaves her ready to prove she never lost her edge. But this new undercover assignment as John's physical therapist leaves her questioning her loyalties, her purpose, and her sanity. A chameleon accustomed to loosing herself in her undercover roles, Katie suddenly longs to explore their soul deep connections. Author Dee Davis creates a powerful story of love, betrayal and murder in MIDNIGHT RAIN. The connection between Jonathan and Katie leaves them both breathless even as it threatens his freedom and her career. Once again Davis demonstrates her deft talent of creating a multilayer plot with meticulous care as tiny details and inferences are used to great effect. With plenty of characters to love and hate, abundant suspects and a generous number of red herrings, MIDNIGHT RAIN will satisfy discerning lovers of romantic suspense.
Rating: Summary: She's done it again! Review: Another great romantic suspense from Dee Davis. This is one author who just keeps on getting better and better!
Rating: Summary: Definitely a shelf keeper! Review: Courtesy of A Romance Review Midnight Rain is another page-turner by Dee Davis that leads you on a merry chase to find out who the real villain is. The story is very suspenseful from beginning to end. Every player employed by Guardian looks guilty and it is not an easy task to pick out the villain. Whenever you suspect one person, it comes out that you are wrong until you come to the last suspect on the list. That's the success of the best of romantic suspense! Definitely a shelf keeper!
Rating: Summary: Anotehr riveting romantic suspense by Dee Davis Review: Courtesy of The Best Reviews Jonathan Brighton was going on his first vacation in many years, for a chance to get away from the stresses of his job, but all went horribly wrong. While driving through Mexico, he is pulled over for what seems to be a routine traffic stop. However, it is anything but routine. He is shot in the head and left for dead on the side of the road. Six months later, Jonathon, who now goes by John, has had a rather miraculous recovery, but he has no memory of most of the events leading up to his rather uncharacteristic vacation. Just as John is leaving the hospital to go home, there is some rather shocking news uncovered. One of his partners was found dead, having disappeared right around the same time John left for Mexico, and John is the prime suspect! Katie Cavanaugh is an undercover FBI agent, posing as John's physical therapist. She is on a mission to prove John's guilt in the murder of Derek Miller, one of his partners. She has her own reasons for wanting to solve this murder and doesn't want to let anything get in the way. From the moment she meets John though, she realizes this will be no ordinary case for her. There is an immediate attraction between the two of them, and though both know they should resist it, do they really want to? John is a totally different man as a result of his attempted murder, parts of his memory gone forever and lacking the ability to perform even the simplest of tasks easily. While he struggles to overcome his injury, he must also face the fact that his partners in his business don't seem to want him around anymore. His only constant is Katie, but if he knew her secret, he'd want nothing to do with her. Katie has her work cut out for her, she has to catch a killer and time is running out. For there appear to be many secrets kept amidst the partners of John's company, ones that the partners will keep at any cost. Suspicions fly and danger lurks around every corner. Through it all, Katie and John draw closer to each other, and she realizes he couldn't possibly be the murderer. When it appears his life is in serious danger yet again, Katie has to make a choice. Should she reveal her own secrets and risk losing forever the man she is fast discovering she cannot live without? Or does she keep her identity a mystery, and stick around long enough to protect John at the risk of her own life? What should be an easy choice isn't, when more bodies turn up along with many other ugly secrets and the people they thought they could trust reveal their true colors. Ms. Davis has done it again! She has written a masterpiece that has it all: romance, action, mystery, and humor. She has talent for spinning tales that keep the reader guessing and eager for more. The answers once again, are not at all what this reviewer expected. Her characters are engaging and multi-dimensional. One truly gets a feel for them and everything that makes them who they are. John and Katie are meant for each other as anyone can see Ms. Davis blends together an attention to detail, passionate characters, edge of the seat suspense, and a believable story to weave a delightful tale of mystery and love. Her talent improves with each book she writes. If Midnight Rain is an example, future works will be every bit as engrossing, driving the reader onward through the story, disappointed only in the fact the book has to end at some point. As always, this reviewer eagerly anticipates the next release by a master of suspense, Ms. Davis.
Rating: Summary: Agree with What a Letdown Review: I also do not understand all the rave reviews about this book. I gave up after about Chapter 4 and skimmed through to the end in about 15 minutes. I agree with one of the other reviewers that I got tired of reading Katie repeating her thoughts and did not think she was a particularly strong character. Jonathan struck me as a little whiney also. I had already figured out the bad guy by the second chapter but even he turned out to be just a weak link.
Rating: Summary: Humdrum. Review: I usually enjoy Ms. Davis' books at least 4 stars, but this one kept putting me to sleep. If you can make it to the end, it gets a little better. I almost gave up two or three times. Am I the only one who feels this way?
Rating: Summary: WHAT A LETDOWN Review: I'm really surprised at the numerous good reviews which this book received. Midnight Rain is such a letdown. The whole book was a drag as I just couldn't get into the flow of the story because of the author's concentration on repeating the thoughts of the heroine. She kept on repeating the same thoughts going thru' the heroine's mind that I was really sick of it. I literally had a huge headache from forcing myself to finish the book. This book lacked the humour & slickness which I found in "Just Breathe" & "Dark of the Night". It also lacked the tenderness in "The Promise". I really hope that she regains her flair in "Dancing in the Dark".
Rating: Summary: Light romantic suspense Review: Johnathan Brighton is badly in need of a vacation, but as he's driving through the lonely desert highway into Mexico, he's pulled over, shot on the side of the road, and left for dead. Six months later, he's lost part of his memory, and the partial use of his right hand. For a workaholic CEO, this isn't just an inconvenience, it's a disaster.
Katie Cavenaugh is an undercover FBI agent struggling to maintain her reputation after an impulsive decision has her boss questioning her abilities. The assignment is simple: pose as John's physiotherapist, find evidence implicating him in a murder committed just before he left for Mexico, and get out. But things get complicated when Katie realizes there's more to John than meets the eye. Can she reign in her attraction to him and focus on getting the job done?
I loved Dee Davis's DANCING IN THE DARK, but MIDNIGHT RAIN didn't quite live up to my expectations. For a romantic suspense book, I had the real culprit figured out from page one. That knowledge definitely made it hard to pick up the book again after putting it down, and it made the story drag in parts.
I found the characters to be three-dimensional and well written, however, with John leading the pack. It was refreshing to read a romance novel where the hero is less-than-perfect physically. This imperfection doesn't make him any less sexy or charming, however. His need for Katie, his reluctance to trust her once he finds out her true identity, and his willingness to fight and discover the truth had me rooting for him throughout the length of the novel.
Overall, a light romantic suspense novel to curl up with at night, and one that won't make you want to sleep with the lights on. For a real suspense thriller, and a better indication of Ms. Davis's talents, pick up DANCING IN THE DARK. You won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Recommended reading! Review: Jonathan Brighton founded the successful company called Guardian. Guardian specialized in protecting computer systems from hackers. During a rare vacation Jonathan went to Mexico and ended up getting shot in the head. He awakened to find one of his top employees dead and a huge chunk of company funds missing. All the evidence pointed to him! Problem was, he had NO MEMORY of anything before the head shot. And a bullet tears everything in its path, so there was ZERO chance he would ever remember. Two Austin policemen, Eric D'Angelo and Tony Haskins, were honestly trying to find out if John really committed the murder of one of his top employees or not. However, Edmund Roswell, a lead FBI agent due to soon retire, kept getting in the way. For the FBI to be so interested showed that more was happening than met the eye. Kathleen Cavanaugh was an undercover agent with the FBI. She was to be John's live-in physical therapist. She would also search for evidence to prove him guilty. Jonathan WANTED to know the truth, innocent or guilty, no matter what. If he and Katie found proof that he was guilty, he would turn himself in. He did not know that she was FBI or that she was really the enemy. But, then again, Katie began to wonder just WHOSE side she was really on too! The emotions between her and "the perp" grew daily. She had to choose - FAST - between duty and honor! **** In the synopsis I basically outlined the main characters, who they are, and how they fit into the plot. Yet there are many secondary characters so well written that I found myself either liking or hating them immediately. There are many suspects, links, and lies going on. I admit that I figured it out about half way into it; however, I am a mystery fan of many years. That gave me an edge. I do not know if the average person would figure it out. I found the story very entertaining. I only wish there had been a bit more romance in it and a few more details on how John did some of the hacking. Highly recommended reading from an awesome author! ****...
Rating: Summary: thrilling romantic suspense Review: Jonathan Brighton, CEO of Guardian, a computer security firm based in Austin, needs a vacation so he decides to on a retreat to a remote part of Mexico. Along the way two Mexicans stop his vehicle on an isolated road. The thugs assault and shoot Jonathan, leaving him on the roadside to die. Six months later, FBI Agent Kathleen Cavanaugh goes undercover as a physical therapist assigned to help Jonathan still recovering from his near death injuries. Her real assignment is to observe Jonathan and determine whether he murdered a Guardian employee Derek Miller, who died while Jonathan was on his ill-advised Mexican trip. Shockingly, Katie finds herself attracted to the vulnerable CEO even as she wonders if he is a cold-blooded killer. MIDNIGHT RAIN is a thrilling romantic suspense that sub-genre fans will appreciate. Especially delightful is the dilemma confronting Katie as she struggles between love and the potential that her beloved is a murderer who had bad luck with his Mexican alibi. Interestingly readers will feel the anguish that Jonathan suffers as he struggles to recover physically and mentally. Though the final twist seems odd and out of left field, Dee Davis delivers a strong tale, as her fans have come to expect from her while sending new readers seeking previous novels from this skilled artist.
