Rating: Summary: Thoroughly disappointed!! Review: It pains me to even say how disappointed I am in this book. I am a E. Lynn Harris fan to the hilt. I've read & so enjoyed ALL of his other books. But this time I am floored & almost speechless. I guess I expected a whole lot more out of this book & out of the characters, especially out of John "basil" Henderson. He is one of those characters that you love to hate & hate to love. But in this effort "Basil" was just plain corney!!! I'm sorry E. Lynn but it seemed that this book was very rushed & not well thought out. I know you could have done a lot better! I found myself checking the cover to make sure I read the name of the author correctly. Please if you are going to write another one (which the ending seems to make the reader believe that) please, please go back to the writing style you used in your other books. Make the characters real & believable, not corney & just plain stupid. Readers: SAVE your money on this one, borrow the book or by paperback. I'm in tears here because I really like E. Lynn Harris as a writer & story teller, but this was not a good book at all. Sorry :(
Rating: Summary: Let This Day Go By Review: As an avid fan of E. Lynn Harris, I was extremely disappointed in this latest effort. Perhaps it was a contract situation where he HAD to put out a book....any book. Normally, Mr. Harris exhibits a Swengalli effect upon a reader. Long before "Not A Day Goes By" was released, I wanted it. After settling down, dimming lights, lighting candles, etc., I embarked on my E. Lynn Harris journey. Within the first several pages I found myself turning up the lights and snuffing out the candles. I wanted off the journey. Everything was predictable. Cliche'd and shallow. The saving grace for me came in the character of Windsor. It appeared that Mr. Harris cared enough about this particular character to give her depth and wonderful dialogue. Ava and Yancey came off as two conniving grifters. There were no surprises there. Basil's usual self-absorbtion was watered down even after he found out he had been deceived. I'm sure that a writer such as E. Lynn Harris will not be abandoned simply because of the triviality of this book. I, for one, will continue to support him. I know he can do better and look forward to it.
Rating: Summary: Not a DAY goes by???????? Review: My expectations were too great for this book. I thought Yancy and Basil would re-create the fire that were in Harris' previous books, but sadly it took too long for the fire to get started. The fire did blaze when it was ignited but then book came to an end. Basil is just too mellow, he got almost as bad as Nicole in th eprevious book. Does Yancey have that effect on characters? Overall, entertaining but bordering on dull soap opera. Here's to seeing a new book dedicated to Harris' greatest character. JOHN BASIL HENDERSON
Rating: Summary: Another Great One Review: I feel like I know the characters personally, so it was a very good read for me.I couldn't put it down. A must read. Looking forward for the next one, because Basil has given notice he's back!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: A Trashy Read Review: Don't mistake this for anything but what it is -- a purely trashy read. All of the main characters spend the book lying to each other and practicing deceit. None of them are particularly likeable, and their dialogue and sex scenes are mawkish, but there's a cheap thrill in the jaw-dropping coldness with which they treat each other. It's a cute way to empty your head for a few hours before you read something more substantial.
Rating: Summary: good book Review: mr harris's book was good as the rest of his books are i love e.lynn harris but i do not condone homosexuality it's wrong and i don't think anyone should but the book was great.
Rating: Summary: I don't "get" the hype Review: Maybe my expectations were too high after reading the other reviews, but I found this book to be highly lacking. In fact, during the first half of the book, my inclination was to give this book an even lower rating. The second half was more interesting, but still could not overcome the problems with this book. First of all, as other reviewers have noted, the writing is really cliche. There was nothing creative about the prose, except the fact that the story is told alternatively between the first person (as Basil) and the third person. Second, the main characters (except Windsor) are so vapid and self-involved that it is hard to feel any sympathy for them. In fact, both Basil and Yancey (the formerly betrothed) have both concealed from each other such important aspects of their lives, and acted in such manipulative manners, that I found myself feeling that they really deserved each other. However, I found the relationship itself hard to swallow -- why would Basil fall so hopelessly in love with such a shallow woman? He doesn't imply it is her looks, but this seems to be her only positive attribute... At least Yancey's attraction to Basil, his repeatedly-described manhood and his money, are obvious. As I said, maybe my expectations were too high, and maybe I should have read the author's prior novels (which apparently involve some of the same characters) in order to feel some empathy for the characters. However, the best attribute of this book is that it is a quick, unchallenging read.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT! Review: I have read all of E. Lynn Harris books and I must say the first two were great but the last two were a bit of a disappointment. If you read all his books it will help to understand Basil better but even if you did not it was easy to follow what was going on. I read this book in 6 hrs I just could not put it down, it was easy to read and it was a page turner. I see a lot of growth in Basil, I like the relationship he had with his sister, nephew and even Raymond, however he's still in denial about his sexuality. yancy was a trip, but she had some serious emotional problems, that made it easy to understand why she was the way she was. My only complaint about this book is that I would have love to see a happier ending for Basil and also a resolution to some of Yancy's emotional problems. I recognize that the way it ended is really just the beginning of another book so I am awaiting the next one from ELH. I highly recommend this book and I promise you that you will not be disappointed. Good job Mr. Harris P.S. Omar Tyree, you can learn a thing or two from this man.
Rating: Summary: Another hit!!! Review: E. Lynn Harris had done it again. I have been a long fan of Harris since his first novel "Invisible Life." He captured me then like a hype needing his next fix. I really enjoy his novels because his characters are so alive and colorful. The popularity of his novels is not just the story line but how he tells the story. In "Not a day goes by" this story starts off like a roller coaster ride, climbing that hill in a slow pace and then once you reach the top........the fun and excitement begans with the speed and spiral turns. E. Lynn is absolutely amazing and I'm waiting in anticipation for the next novel.
Rating: Summary: Great as usual Review: When this book first came out, it took me a while to read it, cause I remembered Yancey from Abide With Me. I've read all his books, so I knew what was up with Basil. I didnt know if I wanted them together. Finally, I bought it. It was so good, but I didnt like the ending. I wanted to see something happend to Ava. Also I didnt like the way he included Raymond's name in the epilouge as being one of Basil's picks. I dont think Raymond is interested in him. Other than that, like all the other ELH novels, this was a good read. I look forward to the next.
