Rating: Summary: A fun read Review: The heroine of this book is overweight and over 30, so that right there makes it quite unique. Set in England, this book will appeal to all the Anglophiles out there. American Tessa Riordan is picked to play a duchess for a month on a reality-type show about life in England in 1879. Her British duke, Max, is jaw-droppingly handsome, with stunning blue eyes, and he likes Tessa! Flab and all! However, his daughter, Melody, is another story. Tessa has to win her over if she is going to live happily ever after with her duke. And then there's Max's snobby sister, Barbara, who wants Max to marry another woman. As the lady of the house, Tessa's main responsibility is to oversee the staff of approximately fifteen servants to ensure things run smoothly in the house. Keeping them happy proves to be no easy task. The funny things that happen during the month of filming the show keep the book moving along quickly. The dialogue is great, and the many love scenes between Max and Tessa are really hot. This is a lighthearted romance and I recommend it for anyone who likes a little humor with their love stories.
Rating: Summary: A Real Hoot! Review: Considering it's rare a book can get me to laugh out loud, it's understandable that I LOVED this book - I literally had to put it down a couple of times because I was laughing so hard. Katie Macalister has a terrific sense of humor and can make the absurd seem nearly normal. After I bought the book I realized it was the same author who had written Men In Kilts. I enjoyed Kilts, but don't think it was as good as this one, although both have the same strong points, including a well handled lighthearted look at the situation and the fun of a female Yank taking on the Empire (in Kilts it was Scotland, in Corset it's England). Best of all is Macalister's dialogue. This is a wonderful book for an enjoyable read that leaves you feeling good. You'll be glad you read it.
Rating: Summary: Gark Review: I originally bought this book for my sister's birthday and then ended up reading it while doing guard duty with The Four Heathens (my sis's kids). I laughed, I cried (because I was laughing so hard...) and when my darling sister returned I made her read this wonderful, marvelous, hilarious book. I loved Tessa! A size 18 and over 30 heroine is a refreshing change from the skinny wenches we generally read about. Having worn a corset (with a wench costume) to the Renaissance Faire on several occassions, I fully appreciated the difficulties Tessa experienced during her month in the life of a Duke. At any rate, my sis found the book to be suitable reference and promptly dragged me off to the nearest bookstore (50 miles away and across the Arkansas border) to purchase every Katie MacAlister book we could find. All of which I have enjoyed. Being the meaner sister, I called first dibs...I learned that when under threat of mutilation one can read and enjoy a Katie Mac book in just under 6 hours...so, to recap, LOVED IT!
Rating: Summary: The best book I have read in a long time. Review: I have never heard of or even read Katie Macalister before until three days ago. I found this book while looking for some summer reading and I am so glad that I did. I finished this book in about two days and did not stop laughing the entire time. Ms. Macalister is able to write a story that is both romantic and true-to-life without being unbelievable. I loved this book so much, that when I finished it, I ran out and bought two more copies to send to my mother and sister out of state. You will absolutely LOVE this book!
Rating: Summary: I had this on order after finishing men in kilts... Review: I waited patiently for this one after reading Men in kilts and then Improper English. I am a true anglophile. Soooo I LOVE the idea of american women goin to the UK and conquering her men. I too loved the setting. I also love the fact that her heroine isnt perfect either and she still gets the guy. Altho I thought the romance moved a bit quickly at first... I guess only having a month to shoot didnt leave alot of time. And I did get lost with the whole sister/brother-in-law fiasco and the herring lol. I did love the book. I am now waiting for her next one that was announced "A Hard Day's Knight". If it was up to me I'd tell Katie to keep em coming and the faster the better. I love a feel good romance and with Katie the women seem REAL. And, I find myself thinking, "I'd have said that". I hightly recommend any of her novels. I loved them all!
Rating: Summary: A great laugh! Review: I really enjoyed this books, it's is hardly the worst book as some "brave" (not!) soul tries to proclaim. It lightened by spirit and I felt happy after reading it. What more can a book do for you? Why is it, all the "bad" reviews for a book comes from a "reader from..." People hiding behind masks? If someone dislikes a book enough, then they should have to guts to stand up and proclaim it with true conviction. Dismiss "creative writers of readers from"...and read people who actually stand up and say they like a book and why and are proud to put their name to their opinion. A reader from = nothing to me. I never listen to their poison.
Rating: Summary: Whine, whine, whine Review: Not me, the danged heroine! I WANT to like Katie Macalister. I really do. I dig her non-traditional heroines and I thought the premise was great. I even overlooked the fact that Men in Kilts is the worst book I've ever read (including Fabio's epic masterpiece, The Pirate)and gave her another chance. But... can there BE a more insipid and irritiating heroine than Tessa? If I were Max I'd have shanked her the first day in the house. I think the twelve year old generally came off with more maturity than the thirty-nine year old heroine. I dunno, everyone else seems to dig this book, but I couldn't stand it. And as I mentioned above, beware Men in Kilts! If you think Tessa needs to be slapped, wait till you meet whats-her-face...
Rating: Summary: My first Katie book, WOW! Review: I've never read any of her books but I stumbled onto this one. This is an extremely funny (and pretty smutty) book. I found myself laughing out loud at many of the lines uttered by the main character, causing a few strange looks from people on the bus. I am definitely going to have to pick up some of Katie's other books. It's so rare to find a "romance" story that is funny and irreverent in addition to being romantic.
Rating: Summary: Katie does it Again!!!!!! Review: I have to say that this was the best yet of Katie's books. THE CORSET DIARIES had me laughing so hard I had tears streaming down my face. I couldn't put it down. I read it the first time in a little over 3 hours. I have since read it 2 more times and howled the whole time. Keep them coming and Thanks so much Katie!!
Rating: Summary: it's a wow Review: I've just finished "Corset Diaries" and I'm ready to start reading it over again. Katie MacAlister is a master at "first person" point of view. The story is reminiscent of the PBS reality show "Manor House" only much better. The main character Tessa was funny, honorable and sincere. I'm baffled by some of the comments of other reviewers, in regards to disliking "Tessa" as a character. If you've truly read the book, then you must identify with the character of Barbara. There are mistakes, written by previous reviewers, about the character, for example she was not a historian, which was written in a negative review in "All About Romance" by Ellen. Books written in 'first person' are more conversational and do take more time and thought to read in any genre. If you like Jennifer Crusie, Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Rachel Gibson I think you'll like "The Corset Diaries". If you are a fan of PBS reality shows (i.e. Frontier House, 1900's House, Manor House) I think you'll enjoy this book.
