Rating: Summary: An unforgettable love story, Holt at her best! Review: A classic that still surpasses many contemporary love stories. Difficult to put down, you will fall in love with Martha, and the other characters. The love story keeps the pages turning into the night!
Rating: Summary: A Romance Classic Must-Read! Review: Although this romance novel was written well over 30 years ago, it still stands the test of time. It has all the essential elements of a true romance suspense novel: Sprited heroine, dark/handsome/mysterious hero and a good mystery to follow and to decipher throughout the book. For those seeking a "romance" novel, don't let the "suspense" part hold you back. The sexual tension between the 2 main character sizzles! I think this is still Victoria Holt's best novel. Very absorbing book with great atmosphere. The 1st person voice (not much used these days)adds that extra dimension that you are right there with Martha as she ponders the mysteries surrounding her and her feelings for Connan TreMellyn. You will be totally satisfied with the ending!
Rating: Summary: full of mystery and excitement Review: At first the book seemed a bit slow, bu after the fisrt few chapters it got a little more interesting. It's basically about Miss Martha Leigh, a governess of a bratty child,Alvean, and how she stays at their mansion teaching Alvean all sorts of things, while trying to uncover the mystery of Alveans mother, Alice, and her death. It seemed like it was a freak accident, but Martha Leigh is determined to find the true secrets of these events. Meet the intriguing characters as the suspense gets a little better towards the end. A mystery that will keep you interested!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic reading Review: Don't listen the O'Brien review above, this book is far from "campy" (a pretentious term pretentious people use to justify reading romance and popular novels)...yes, this book does owe a lot to Jane Eyre I suppose but the vivid characters, chilling suspense and romance make this a treat you won't forget. Miss Holt proves herself to be a writer of enduring power and imagination. Nothing "campy" about that!
Rating: Summary: NOT ONLY ROMATIC Review: Fist time, I read this book in Chinese. It was so interesting that I read it more then ten times. The ending " We are born, we suffer, we love, we die, but the waves continue to beat upon the rocks; the seed time and the harvest come and go, but the earth remains." is the essence.I am touched by these characters. Now, I read it in English with checking dictionary. If you are an American, how lucky! Read it now.
Rating: Summary: mistress of mellyn Review: I am currently reading this book--again, and I love it every time--and everything else written by victoria holt. Until I clicked on Amazon.com I thought I was the biggest Victoria Holt fan and now I find that I am not alone in my opinion of her. She is the best thriller/romance novelist of all time!
Rating: Summary: One of the enchanting stories by Holt Review: I enjoy reading Victoria Holt books. Although this is not my favorite ( that would be On The Nightof the Seventh Moon} this story is really good. Age does not make this book at all different. I great read for anybody.
Rating: Summary: THE gothic romance classic! Review: I first read this book in 8th grade, at a summer camp. I've lost count of how many times I've read it thus far; but I'm reading it right now and I'm 42 years old!As others have said, this is a timeless classic that relies on a gripping story and excellent characters to hold the reader, rather than the sleazy sex scenes that fill many modern-day romance novels. I believe I have read all of Victoria Holt's books over the years (She has also written as Jean Plaidy and Phillipa Carr) and yes, they are somewhat formulaic, but they are always a good, satisfying read. "Mistress of Mellyn" inspired my interest in all things English, from afternoon tea to English history. It vividly creates a world that completely draws you in, right up to the last page.
Rating: Summary: the lawnranger Review: I first read this book when I was a 7th grader. Since that time I have made sure I have all of this lady's books, as well as those written under her other pen names Jean Plaidy and Phillipa Carr. This book is good for everybody - young people just starting adult reading as well as older people as there is no descriptive sex scenes. There is wonderful suspense. I recommend it for every one looking for a good read!
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book! Review: I first read this book when someone gave it to me for a present. I wasn't so sure about it at first, but I soon learned how good it is! Martha Leigh comes to Mellyn to be a governess of Alice, the master of the house's daughter. Alice's mother has just died and the mystery of her death and other unsolved things still hovers around the house... and soon Martha finds herself to the bottom of the mystery. I like this book a lot. Buy it! It's worth every penny.
