Rating: Summary: Good "fix" for Darcy-starved fans Review: I read Pride and Prejudice many years ago, but I occasionally watch the BBC miniseries whenever I need a "fix." So when I recently discovered the big business of re-working or continuing P&P, I was excited. I chose this book to start because it had some of the best reviews. I must say I was very pleased. I liked the way Ms. Aidan expands on the original story without changing the essence. She just fills in the behind-the-scenes parts we didn't read about in the original. It's like she made the book three times as long, and the more P&P, the better. I especially like her imagined version of Darcy's relationship with his valet, Fletcher, and all of Fletcher's machinations to keep Darcy at the height of fashion. This first book in the 3-part series describes Darcy's meeting Elizabeth Bennet and the whole embarrassing Bennet family. Of course, the scenes between Darcy and Elizabeth are the heart of Pride and Prejudice. From what I've read, Elizabeth isn't in the second book at all, so I don't expect to like it as much, but I'll give it a chance. My only complaints about this book are the typo's and misspellings that simple editing should have prevented. At one point, the name of Bingley's brother-in-law, Mr. Hurst, was spelled "Mr. Hearst." That's just careless editing.
Rating: Summary: Dovetails Beautifully Review: I think this book dovetails beautifully with Pride and Prejudice. I actually read it twice and referred to the original P & P for comparison. My only negatives are the use of the word "electrify" (page 90) which is out of place, as I don't think it fits with the time period, and there are some proofreading oversights. The character of Mr. Darcy, as created by Jane Austen, is broadened by Pamela Aiden in a manner so consistent with the original that it is almost seamless.
Rating: Summary: Wonderfully true to Austen Review: I truly enjoyed this book. Ms. Aiden has a wonderful was of staying true to Austen while inserting her own personality. I admit I do get a bit bored whenever Elizabeth is not nearby because I adore their relationship so much. However, I can't wait for part 2 to arrive. I think it was very clever to write from Darcy's point of view and I adore his valet.
Rating: Summary: Loved it. Review: I was so enchaned I stayed up all night reading. I can hardly wait for book 2 and book 3. Please hurry Ms Aiden!
Rating: Summary: The perfect gift for an Austen fan Review: If there's a Jane Austen fanatic on your holiday list, this wonderful book would make a perfect gift. My mother, sister and friends (kindred Janeites all )will be finding it under the tree from me. Readers of Pamela's work will understand this suggestion as an addition to the gift: insert a bookmark of embroiderery threads (three green, two yellow, and one each of blue, rose, and lavender)knotted prettily. Oh, be sure to also include something lavender-scented...perhaps a candle or some lotion...essential for proper Darcy-Elizabeth ambience while reading. A lovely volume of Shakespeare's sonnets would be nice as well! Finally, just in case you know someone who is uninitiated in the delights of Pride and Prejudice, a copy of the book accompanied by the DVD-Special Edition is a must! Remember, Books 2 and 3 of "Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman" are promised for next year! More gifting!
Rating: Summary: Your bible in all things Darcy! Review: If you adore Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, then you will fall in love with Darcy all over again in this new tale. True to Austen's style and rhythm, but with additional characters all her own, Pamela Aiden tells a wonderful story in a whole new perspective, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy's view. Starting off with Mr. Bingley and company arriving at the Meryton assembly, you travel with Darcy as the events unfold. Learning the answers to many questions one has when one reads the original, is the most delicious aspect. To those who have not read Pride & Prejudice, you will be utterly spoiled at getting all these inside glimpses into Darcy's mind on the first read through. You will not regret this purchase. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: The elusive Darcy meets his match Review: If you have ever wondered what Darcy was thinking in Pride and Prejudice? Pamela Aiden tells the story of Pride and Prejudice from Darcy's point of view. The cool headed Mr. Darcy's composure is breeched by the witty, graceful and lovely Elizabeth Bennet. Darcy is caught in a dilemma between "being a man of property" with high social standing, and his desire for a woman that outclasses the women of his class. Pamel Aiden also gives us a view of the Mr. Darcy's "people". There is Darcy's Shakespeare quoting valet, Fletcher, and the ever faithful butler Wicher. I was amused by Fletcher's machinations as he attempts to help Darcy win Miss Elizabeth's heart. The book gives us the background of friendship between Bingley and Darcy, and the relationship between Georgiana and Darcy.I enjoyed the peek in at Darcy's high class world. I personally can't wait to read the next book in this series.
Rating: Summary: A Book Such As This... Review: If you love Jane Austen, then you will love this book. Pamela Aiden keeps true to Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice. I have read a few sequels from Darcy's point of view and all have been a disappointment, this is the exception. If Jane Austen had written more about Fitzwilliam Darcy, this would have been the result. A truly enjoyable read from beginning to end. Pamela Aiden keeps you wanting more.
Rating: Summary: The Definitive Darcy Story Review: If you've ever wondered how Bingley and Darcy became friends, why Darcy tolerates Caroline, how Georgiana first came to hear of Elizabeth Bennet, and who keeps Darcy looking so dapper and out of trouble, then you must read Aidan's beautifully written, richly textured novel. Immensely satisfying for the P&P fanatic as well as a wonderfully romantic story for those who aren't familiar with the original story, the only problem is that it ends too soon!
Rating: Summary: Refreshingly Wonderful Review: In a time when so many books are written to stimulate appetites rather than quicken the senses, this book is a refreshing oasis. It is filled with all the things one would expect from a Jane Austen book, but is also written in a more intimate manner. You will learn more about Mister Darcy than you ever thought you would and you will be impatiently anticipating the next books in the volume. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those who read and love Austen books.
