Summary: Pretty Good
Review: I have been following this work since it was circulated in a private group several years ago. One reviewer below calls this volume a "teaser." It is, and I assure the next two volumes will be worth the wait! Pamela Aiden does a marvelous job of filling in the gaps in Mr. Darcy's life. I am not such a fan of sequels in general, and a few of her additions seem over the top, but by and large this is an enjoyable, entertaining book.

Summary: Delightful!
Review: I have read many sequels to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice which have all been awful and left me wanting! THIS story, by Pamela Aidan, on the other hand has kept the characters in tact from the original. She uses language similar to Austen and makes a very believable story from Darcy's perspective. Her sense of humor and insight are fun and rewarding. We can never have another Jane Austen, but Pamela Aidan comes close to satisfying those of us who want more!

Summary: 5 stars a much too few
Review: I have read this book already as fanfiction on austen.com, I know not how often. I was enchanted, amused, moved, spellbound. I bought also the book and await with impatience the other two. All I can say: buy and enjoy!

Summary: Enjoyable
Review: I just finished reading this book and enjoyed it. It's cleverly done. I'd like to read it again in conjunction with Pride and Prejudice so that I'm getting both perspectives at the same time and also to see how it is interwoven with Pride and Prejudice. I noticed the author used a few long, unusual words and I had to get the dictionary out. I also thought the book was a little long. I'm looking forward to reading the next book that continues the Pride and Prejudice storyline.

Summary: Good first installment
Review: I liked this the first time I read it on a fan fiction site. I would recommend it to anyone, but if you'd seen it before consider that it's the same thing. If you're a die-hard P&P reader then by all means, get yourself a copy!!!

Pamela Aidan's strength and weakness comes from one source - her writing style. Her descriptive style is very good especially since Jane Austen was spare in that area. I can appreciate the wordy and flowery in some parts, but in others I felt it was a little overworked:

"As well as you know, Charles has often born the brunt of my logic and suffers me, in his good-natured way, to tear his ill-considered opinions to pieces with no untoward effects on his friendship. But, in this instance, he had an unexpected champion, the aforementioned Miss Elizabeth Bennet, who entered the lists armed with the shield Sensibility against which the lance Logic is ever seen as a scurrilous, unworthy weapon. Nevertheless, burnishing Logic with confidence, I sallied forth, only to have it shatter into the veriest splinter against that unanswerable defence."

Covering the same time period, what JA wrote in one book will take 3 for this author.

It's not Jane Austen, it never is. That one ("overworked")nitpick aside, I think this work is a credit to the author. She obviously has a great love for P&P and Jane Austen, and it shows. She explores Darcy's thoughts, feelings and the possible motives for his actions. Miss Aidan's Darcy is passionate and at this point in the story, in utter confusion about his own situation. What will happen next?! =)

Summary: Darcy's story
Review: I love Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and am trying to find good sidelights to it. This is one of the best of a growing number of novels based on P & P. Aidan's writing is clear and true to the flavor of Austen, and she does a lovely job of making Darcy's emotions and motivations come to light. I am looking forward to the next two books in the trilogy.

Summary: Fabulously written Darcy's side of the tale
Review: I love Ms. Aidan's writings showing us Darcy's view of Pride & Prejudice. Her style and understanding of the nuances of the society of Ms. Austen's times and her insight to Mr. Darcy (though perhaps a wee bit post-modern psychologically) make for a wonderful read and re-read. I happily await the third book in the series. Thank you Ms. Aidan!

Summary: A surprisingly good sequel
Review: I loved Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," of course, and though I was hungry for more of the novel's world and characters, I did not want to destroy my taste by reading a badly-written modern sequel. All previous such "sequels" that I had run across either use Regency English badly/inconsistently or do not present an interesting story with characterizations consistent with Austen's work. I found this novel and read it with great enjoyment and humor. The author not only uses the older form of English well, she does not make a pretention of using it and thus did not distract me from the story. She creates a great many interesting new characters, brings in some well-researched history from the Regency period, gives Darcy more depth and character while maintaining his complete believability, and introduces interesting personal and political plotlines to propel the story forward. I definitely recommend this P&P-derived novel! You will not be disappointed!

Summary: Darcy fleshed out and brought to vivid life for us all
Review: I loved Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" and fell in love with Darcy there. But there is really very little about him. Pamela Aidan gives us all the reasons he is who he is and why he behaves like he does. She does it with such brilliance. She does Jane Austen's character a great service by bringing him to life for us all. Now we know what he was doing all those months away from Elizabeth. Hurray!!!!!
