Rating: Summary: An enthralling love story Review: A very well-written romance which enchants and captivates its readers. I was especially moved by the obsessive love the hero had for the heroine. It might be lust at first sight. But gradually it grew into infatuation and then deeper feelings. When Ceidre was given ten lashes as punishment for treason in helping her brother to escape prison, Rolfe ordered his man "do not break her skin ". During the whipping, he clinched his fists, his heart fluttering. When the whip fell again and again with Ceidre's moans and cries of pain, his heart suffered such anguish that he had to grip the hitching post near him with all his strength. After the final lash, he at once sprang forward to cut her down and whispered, "Je le regrette." If this is not love, I don't know what it is. If you love heroes who are virile, brave and honorable, you'll love Roalfe and Brenda Joyce has written one of the most luscious love stories which is most enjoyble.
Rating: Summary: Brenda Joyce at her un-PC best! Review: Alot of people think this book is too over the top, but I am not one of them! This is one of the first romances I ever read and I am STILL drooling over Rolfe. Yes, he's a caveman. Yes, he can be cruel to the heroine. Yes, he's a ravisher of women and a pillager of villages. Yes, there is the infamous tree scene (which I thought was HOT). But you add all of that up and you get one sizzling, wonderful book! I doubt a book like this would get published today, and part of me thinks that's a good thing, but there is this shameless part of me that secretly adores all the un-PCness of this book. I read it at least once a year, and it's never lost its luster. Enjoy . . . if you dare! :->
Rating: Summary: A MUST!! Review: although my immediate reaction when i read this book was OH MY GOD EHHHHH!! i read it again and thought that this was exactly what happened all those years ago. brenda joyce captured the true essence of life in that era. the rape scene at the start and the sister did sicken me but made this book truely original in every aspect. thus i recommend it to all those readers who live in their fantasy black and white world where love is all consuming and not in the least violent!
Rating: Summary: please write more romance... Review: First of all I'd like to say how dissapointed I am with Brenda Joyce and her attempt to write "mystery" novels. She really should stick to what she knows best. Having said all that, I really highly recomend this book. It's touching, it really is. I wish I could find someone that loved me like that. I'd be in seventh heaven. There are some rather ah "vulgar" seens, some people would say, but if you look past the "rape" of the heroine you'll find a story that goes much deeper than your average romance novel.
Rating: Summary: The only good thing about this book is the epilogue. Review: I don't know why everybody praises this book so highly, while I found it so terrible. I would sugest some other books with the same settings such as My Lord Conqueror by Samantha James and The Prize by Julie Garwood. I'll gladly give five stars ++ for those two. They are just awesome. Don't be offended, I usually like Brenda Joyce's, but this one is just not for me.
Rating: Summary: true love prevails through the most unlikely situation Review: I enjoyed this book so much, i read it straight through in one day. when i finished, i just kinda sat back and thought about how sweetly the romance worked out but then i was like "wait... that's not right" because it SHOUDN'T of worked out. It was sweet because true love won out, but ciedre's love must have been seriously stong to over look some of the issues Rolfe had. Issues like rape and slaughter. Her first encounter w/ him resulted in him knocking her flat on her back and nearly rapeing her. If it had been me, i would have never forgiven him for just that. But ciedre kept comming back to him even after he did rape her and on her WEDDING night. Thats just twisted. I understand that the whole feminist thing was hundreds of years from taking place, but did that girl completely lack good sense? the reason I only gave it 2 stars is beacuse she actually made love to Rolfe right after he raped her. Its too perverted for my taste.
Rating: Summary: Only One Review: I gave this book 1 star because nil-point was not an option!I agree with other readers who have said that Rolfe is an unsympathetic hero. He is a rapist, there is no getting away from that and however sexy and assertive you may think him just think that if you met him now would you really fall for him? I think not so would the heroine have fallen for him then? The heroine has a problem with her eye. Why? Was it to show Rolfe really had a tender side and could love her regardless? The man we were introduced to wouldn't have given her a second glance and would probably have burnt her at the stake or sent her to a nunnery. I was surprised at the USA reviewers who seemed to think that because this book is set in 1069 it is reasonable to assume that the hero would be a rapist, that all Norman knights acted like ravaging sex-maniacs and that this book was a perfect history lesson. The man was a knight with all the related vows of chivalry knighthood entailed in those times. Just because he was a conquoring soldier did not mean that his oaths would be discarded lightly. He would probably have been viewed with derision by his men for such lack of self-control and would have been answerable to the King for how he acted. In 1069 William was still trying to pacify a conquered country and didn't want to ignite a tinder-box situation. For readers who thought this story a perfect example of how life was lived in 1069 I would recommend hopping on a 'plane and come visit English Heritage at Battle Abbey/Hastings or buy some good medieval history books! The real story would really get your pulse beating. Rolfe the Relentless(!) Was no hero and I defy anyone to have forgiven him - ever!
Rating: Summary: ITS HOT!!Not your average lovey, dovey, sappy romances Review: I have read many of the other reviewers comments and felt that they are correct. This book is not for those who want the perfect hero who wines and dines the heroine!!He is a man from around 1066 and that is not definately not a period of feminism. Thus, the rape scene although criticized by some is rather stimulating and there was nothing brutal about it at all!!! I think the scene could be better labeled as plain ordinary "rough sex". Anyway, the book was a fast paced -- not filled with excessive adjective -- but filled with actions, non stop. THe book focuses on the two main characters unlike some other romances that takes forever for the two lovers to meet. THis book will catch your attention and you'll want to finish it in one day. I loved it!!!! Keeper on my shelf as well.
Rating: Summary: Unforgettable Review: I have read several of Brenda's novels, and like some of the other reviewers, found it to be an incredible, emotional roller coaster! It is difficult to understand the behavior of the characters, but lets face it, this was not a very "civilized" period of time and I feel she is extremely true to the period of time in which the novel takes place. I also like these types of stories, much more than some of her recent work. She can truly capture moments in time with rich, luscious detail. Not to be missed is Promise of the Rose and The Game.
Rating: Summary: STEAMY! PASSIONATE! A KEEPER! Review: I just finished reading this book last night. I found it to be a great read. It was full of such gut wrenching emotion on both of the main characters sides that you felt you truly knew them... From the beginning Rolfe knows that Ceidre is ment to ne his. Cercumstances stand intheir way... They soon find a way to overcome them but then betrayal tears them apart. Although many people were disgusted with the strong sexual scenes, I feel that they were probably close to what a man of that time, in that situation would have done. He was a very SEXY hero. They loved each other with true passion.
