Rating: Summary: SUPERB! EXCITING! ROMANCE AT ITS BEST! Review: I see that some reviewers were complaining about the language in this book. Who knows how they talked back then and who cares. All I know is I understood the characters and it didn't take away from the time period. I love Lynx and Jane but the story of Robert Bruce and Marjory was so exciting! The way she described Robert Bruce, he must have been breathtaking. I just want to say if you are looking for history well pick up a history book. But if you are looking for romance this book will fulfill this need. Virginia you are wonderful, I anxiously await your next book.
Rating: Summary: A very good book. Review: I think, this was the best book i've read in a while. I had trouble putting it down and doing my housework. I look forward to reading more books by Virginia Henley.
Rating: Summary: Fantasy Land Review: I thought this book was very charming. It is the tale of a young girl who unwillingly falls in love with a Fabio type warrior. The part that made me teary-eyed was when he was fatally injured, but this maiden suckled him back to life with her own breast milk. Come on folks that is love. This book is a good read for all us innocent and devoted to love.
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK IS NOT WORTH ITS PRICE. Review: I totally agree with the reader from Chicago. THE AUTHOR DOESN'T HAVE A CLUE ABOUT THE LANGUAGE OF THE PERIOD SHE'S WRITING ABOUT. If her goal was to make the reader better understand the dialogues, doesn't she think the reader would've bought a Contemporary Romance instead? Henley is one of the worst, if not the worst, authors when it comes to dialogues. Her sentences are too simple, uninspired, and often silly. How's this for author's idea of a 13th century response?: "I am bad." This book is laughable!
Rating: Summary: An enjoyable read.... Review: I was recommended this book after reading Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, and since Im drawn to books written during Historical times, I thought I would give this one a try. It was a really good book, it had a story line, some great factual history, and of course romance! This is the first and the only book I have read of Virginia Henley's and I would definately read some others now.
Rating: Summary: Don't Believe the Hype Review: I'm taking the time to review this book because I bought it based on the merits of the quotes plastered all over the cover of the paperback. I've never felt so cheated in my life. The characters were cliches who spoke 20th century dialog. Although the sex is described as "spicy," it was as crass as I've ever read outside bonafide pornography. I knew I was in trouble when the heroine turned out to be a red-haired Celt with "special powers," but I made myself finish the book. Even after the heroine dreams about an animal exciting her by licking her breasts. Even though the heroine was "empowered" and no one in the story seemed to realize what time period they inhabited. Even through the climactic breast-feeding scene (warning: no infant is involved). Right up until the end - which was the best part, not because it was good; just because it was finally over.
Rating: Summary: A TOTAL PAGE TURNER Review: I've read all of Henley's books, and this is by for one of the best. the story was moving and entertainig, my only regret is that I wish jory would have had a happier ending, I creied through the rest of the book after she and robert split.
Rating: Summary: Wow!!! Review: If you love history you will love this book. Virginia Henley has a gift for making characters in history come to life with real feelings, and desires, and hard ships making you feel as though they human instead of just names. I loved this book for it's characters, the truth behind what was written, and the mystical power it had over me. I couldn't put it down!!! Keep on writing your magic Virginia!
Rating: Summary: A book destined to become an all-time favorite! Review: Larger than life, rich with history, A YEAR AND A DAY is a sensual love story I couldn't put down. The romance between English lord Lynx deWarenne and innocent Scottish maiden Jane Leslie is woven so skillfully into a tapestry of war and intrigue that it makes the reader feel as if she is there, a part of the turbulent times, the enchanted Scottish setting. Virginia Henley has outdone herself with this wonderful book. Don't miss it!
Rating: Summary: Beautiful cover but... Review: Some of Virginia Henley's books are wonderful, others are horrid. This one falls somewhere in between. I never felt connected with the main characters - Jane and Lynx. Maybe because they never really connected with each other. They seemed like cardboard figures - they said lots of things, they did lots of things but their souls never seemed to touch one another. Henley is usually great for hot, steamy sex but I found most of it very wooden or crude in this book. And what was she thinking when she made historical figures say "Dream on!" or "She's one helluva woman!" This book was a fast read but not very memorable. (An odd aside, though - the paperback's inside cover was one of the most beautiful I've ever seen!)
