Summary: Okay!!
Review: This book was okay! The story was okay a bit dramatic. I would have liked to see the author build up the relationship between Jon and Samone a little more... All of the emotion between Max and Samone was a litte over done for me personally.. I will try a few of the author's other books before making final decision about her writing...

Summary: PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
Review: This is the first book that I have read of Ms. Hodge's and I have to say I was extremely dissapointed. Samone's character was impossible to like, she was so needy of Max that she has an abortion in order to keep him. She doesn't want to have a baby and become a statistic at her age. Gimme a Break!!! What a idiotic and selfish reason. In the meantime, Max couldn't make up his mind about Samone and he was foolin around with other women. Jon is so in love with Samone yet he starts messin with someone else. There was no real meat in this book. The characters were shallow and self-serving. The love she tried to create between Samone and Jon just didn't work because neither of them seemed to know what it was. It's rare that I read a book and don't empathize with any of the characters. There was no one to like except for Samone's friend. Do yourself a favor, save your money and your time.

Summary: *Man! What is going to happen next?*
Review: This is the third novel I have read by Margaret Johnson-Hodge and I loved the story. Samone can't seem to decide who she wants in her life. She's struggling with old love and desire yet finds herself curiously attracted to the very likeable Jeff. I enjoyed their interplay and at times found Samone to be quite harsh, but once you read into her character, you can see why. Jeff makes us see past color and into the heart of a true friend.

The Real Deal is a true page turner and once again I found myself not being able to put it down. My favorite scene in the book is the beauty shop scene. It was a bold move and shows a different point of view, indeed.

I don't understand where the negative criticism is coming from No one is perfect. The characters are written with this in mind, challenging us to see our ownselves. That is my view. The ending was touching and definitely leaves you going "what is going to happen?" I hope to read more about Jeff and Samone in books to come. Continued success, Margaret!

Peace. CLB.

Summary: A WASTE OF MONEY!
Review: This lady (the author),whoever she is, did such a poor job on this "book". Stuff in this book was so unrealistic, such as the fact that she introduced Jon as her lover, you don't go up to your friends and say "Hi, this is (fill-in-the-blank) my lover."! That's only a little pea in the pod, so much other stuff bothered me about this book, especially the whole abortion deal. Basically, just save your money, instead purchase Color of Love by Sandra Kitt.

Summary: Character Development Is A Problem
Review: This novel about interracial love has the same problems I see in other novels on the subject: the black man is all bad and the white guy is all good. The same is true for novels featuring a black man/white woman: there's an evil black woman and the white girl is a saint (see Eric Jerome Dickey's "Milk in my Coffee").

In this novel, I have no idea what motives Max's behavior. And Jon is nice, but what else? The fact that he is nice and white contributes little to this story. I guess we can't have a black woman falling in love with a flawed white man, can we?

I'm hoping to read a better interracial love story someday.

Summary: A Very Good Read
Review: This was a good story. I feel that a lot of women can relate to it, as many of us have been in relationships that were like drugs. We knew it was not good for us, but we just couldn't break the habit, and for the lack of anyone else to be with or from being afraid of being alone, we stayed with that person.

The story was brutally honest and forthright. It left no holds barred. I am glad that Samone let go of her inhibitions and closed-mindedness to take a chance with Jon. I feel that he was a true friend. In the long run, nothing is more important to a person that her own wellbeing and happiness

Summary: ONE OF THE BEST!
Review: Warning, this book is The Real Deal!

For anybody seeking fantasy, better stay away. Samone Lewis is black, female and proud and we get to see her life up close and personal. A freind recommended this book to me. She actually finished this book during a black out by candle light. She said she couldn't put it down until she finished it! I picked it up on a Thursday afternoon and was up until wee hours finishing it just like she had. I couldn't put it down either! From the opening line: "The morning after is a b----" I was hooked because I knew about 'mornings after' and understood exactly how that felt.

I understood Samone like I haven't felt a character in a book in a long time. It was like bits of my life had become her life. Like the struggles I went through were the same ones she did, from working on a job she hated to loving a man who could't love her back the right way. It's been a long time since a book just snatched me up to where I didn't want it to end, but this book did.

I like books that doesn't flinch from reality, tells life like it really is --- THE REAL DEAL does just that. I really dug Ms. Hodge's style and am so ready for her next book I can taste it!
