Rating: Summary: Only okay... Review: I am trying to figure out how people gave this book a 5-star review. It held my interest, but that's about the best thing I can say. The heroine was completely "wishy washy" and her actions and words completely conflicted with her feelings about Ivan. In addition, I felt there was very little romance or passion in this book. Ivan and Lissa had very few "moments" together and when they were in scenes together, they spent them doing and saying hateful things. Finally, the ending of this book was so abrupt, I wondered why I read the whole thing.

Rating: Summary: I like vengeful cads, too, but this one lacks a motive. Review: I like a tortured hero in need of redemption as well as anyone, but there was no excuse for this one's cruelty to a woman who had treated him badly when she was just a girl.
Yes, she struck him and left a scar. Nasty, that. But considering what she suffered that day and in the years since (I won't spoil the tragedy for you, but trust me, it's awful) and that he's fully aware of all this before he returns for his revenge, the degree of contempt with which he treats her isn't something you'd expect from a sane adult.
So naturally, I couldn't put the book down.
Few things are sexier than an unrepentant cad who doesn't know yet that he's in love. But I need a believable motive for my cads' behavior, or I feel uncomfortable reading them. There's something masochistic about finding such a man attractive. The anxiety can compel me to keep reading, but when there are no light moments to relieve the darkness, it's not entirely enjoyable.
So why bother? Because I enjoy McKinney's writing style, she does a lovely job of building and sustaining sexual chemistry between her protangonists, and the sex scenes are worth waiting for.
I can't help but compare this author with others of comparable talent, but whose Cruel & Remorseless Cads are not just sexy, but somehow likeable: Judith Ivory ("Untie My Heart"); Christina Dodd ("A Well Favored Gentleman," The Governess Brides series); Connie Brockway ("A Dangerous Man," "My Dearest Enemy"); Liz Carlisle ('most anything else she writes). No matter how selfish and despicable the behavior of a typical cad by one of these writers, I always know there will be glimpses of likeability and signs that a conscience is coming to the fore. The best cads are endowed with something inherently lovable besides a strong sex drive and an effective glower: a touch of self-depracating humor; an inner monologue that explains the motive for continuing bad behavior. That's what makes them adults and not pouting boys.
It would have been easier to like the protagonist in "When Angels Fall" if he hadn't known all along about the tragedies that had dogged the heroine since the day he left. But it was clear from the opening chapters that he'd been having her spied on since the day he left, knew the adversity she had faced, and with how much courage and dignity, yet he'd continued with his plot to make her penniless, seduce her, and subject her to one last humiliation by refusing marriage.
I kept thinking there would be a revelation that would explain him.
"Maybe," I thought, grasping at straws, "maybe he's planning a surprise party for his beloved and he's only *pretending* to ruin her, to make sure it will be a surprise." Lame, I know; but I would have settled for it.
When Angels Fall is a passionate read, but a painful one. I plan to read more of Meagan McKinney, but I hope to find 5% less anguish next time. Any suggested titles?
Rating: Summary: The book that started my journey to like romance book Review: I love this book. It was the book that made me fell inlove with the hero and heroine, and made me want to read more romance book. The thing I love about Meagan Mckinney's book are that her hero are very manly and loving and reasonable and responsible. Just my opinion, but I couldn't find this other type of hero in other writer's book, except Barbara Cartland. And the heroine's personality as well. That is why Meagan Mckinney is my favorite romance author. She is the only one I would buy a romance book from. Maybe the only complaint I have about this book is that the ending is too abrupt and should have been expanded like many of her other ones. My favorite book from Meagan Mckinney is "The Ground She Walks Upon".
Rating: Summary: When Angels Fall is not angelic Review: Ivan, aka hero, is a brooding, manipulative, vindictive man with a giant chip on his shoulder. Yet he loves the illustrious Lissa, whom gossip mongers have named 'Lusty Lissa'. Lissa, a gentle lady once holding wealth, is now barely able to feed her siblings after a family disgrace and tradgedy. Ivan, an abused illegitimate son of a titled gentleman was banished from his father's estate and sight and raised in Lissa's stables, until their ill-fated infatuation with one another forced Ivan to leave his employment; leaving Lissa to withstand the turbulent and scandalous downfall of her once powerful and respected family alone. Now Ivan has returned, holding his father's title and residing as lord of the village and castle. Ivan's goal is to recapture Lissa's love. His way of recapturing her love astounds me. He manipulates and destroy's relationships and possible marriage proposals during her search for a spouse to care for her impoverished family. Thus making Lissa hate and love him.

Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: One of my all time favorites. I love this book! Ivan is the perfect tortured character. He is brooding, manipulative, and desperately in love with Lissa. The anticipation is gut-clenching. I envy anyone who is reading this book for the first time! Enjoy:)
Rating: Summary: My favorite novel from McKinney Review: One of the things that makes When Angels Fall a favorite of mine is that despite the hero's being cold and cruel, you can still see glimpses of his love for the heroine. The fact that Ivan has nursed a habit of staring at Elizabeth Alcester's portrait is touching, and I loved how concerned he was for her despite the fact that he was supposedly trying to 'ruin' her. His persistence in finding her when she ran away from him, along with his protectiveness towards her when she was sick, convinced me that he was more than just an 'evil' lord with a chip on his shoulder. Tramore tries to appear cruel, but he only does those nasty things because he wants Elizabeth to stay with him, and he knows that she* wants it too. Finally, I think it strange how people keep comparing Ivan with Trevor Sheridan from Lions and Lace. IMHO, Trevor didn't love his heroine as much as Ivan loved Lissa (and if he did, he definitely did not love her as much as his sister, which made L&L disappointing for me). So, if I were to be a heroine in one of McKinney's novels I'd definitely want to be in Lissa's shoes. Rest assured, despite the hardships she endured in the beginning, Ivan will ensure her happiness as his Marchioness.
