Rating: Summary: Strong start; weak finish Review: The"Inn" starts with an entertaining story and a precocious protagonist who can not understand why there would be anti-semitism in America after World War II. It falters seriously at the end, when all of the events become predictable and Blume seems forced to create a fairytale ending.
Rating: Summary: Young Jewish woman in New England, fish out of water. Review: This novel by Elinor Lipman is light easy reading. Definitely a beach book. I believe it could have been more ethnic and more funny.
Rating: Summary: What Fun Review: Elinor Lipman is at it again! Another lively, page turning romance novel. Much better than Isabel's Bed, and on par with The Way Men Act, I really liked this book.
Rating: Summary: A Tale of a Young Girl's Encounter With Anti-Semitism Review: Lipman's heart is in the right place telling the tale of a "restricted" summer resort in Vermont that does allow Jewish guests. But the way the plot is worked out and justice prevails is pedestrian and contrived. In essence the message is love conquers all.
Rating: Summary: Addictive! Review: The new Elinor Lipman book is addictive to say the least. I started it yesterday and finding hard to work today- I just want to be reading. The main character, Natalie, is different then other Lipman characters for we grow up with her. This book also deals with religious discrimination and class struggle. I love it!
Rating: Summary: Ummm.... Summer Reading, If The Beach Is Closed... Review: The protagonist is rather obnoxious, though given, her crusade is a righteous one. To fight anti-semitism is a noble thing; to set out to destroy the anti-semite, perhaps, is not. I was left wondering whether true love had conquered all, or true revenge.
Rating: Summary: Elinor Lipman's done it again Review: I'm an Elinor Lipman fan but was disappointed by "Isabel's Bed," and didn't find the summary of "The Inn at Lake Devine" all that compelling. But I ended up reading this little trifle of a book in one sitting--laughing out loud on occasion. It's a great light read with some interesting points about society and prejudice, and a cute little love story you root for besides. My reservations are that the adult Robin isn't more developed, and the anti-Semitic innkeeper's views aren't explained in more depth. But maybe the latter is the point--many of these attitudes develop without people realizing them or recognizing that they're wrong.
Rating: Summary: Funny and charming Review: This is my favorite book by Ms. Lipman. It is funny and heartfelt, with memorable dialog and characters. I find one seen in particular, where the main character is riding with a host family counting down from the top a hill, especially hysterical.
Great reading - summer, fall, or any time of year.
Rating: Summary: Not Lipman's best Review: I'll reread any of Lipman's books multiple times - except this one. Boring and disappointing finish.
