Summary: A 5 Star Historical But A Sociological Dud
Review: I'm sorry, but I just can't get past the idea of four women sharing one man--and then actually liking each other, too! Yes, I have a Western bias and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Slave auctions, spouse splitting, isolation, harem intrigue, and --don't forget, this is a Bertrice Small novel--unequalled beauty? Color me clueless, but how romantic is any of that? A 13 year-old girl sold naked on a slave auction block may have been in vogue for those times, but I think it should thoroughly repulse the modern reader. Then I reached the part where Cyra Hafise returns to her native Scotland and becomes Janet Leslie again--and I could almost feel the sudden plunge of the plot thread.

Unfortunately, I read The Kadin after reading several of Small's other harem obsessions...I mean, novels partly set in the East (Skye O'Malley, All The Sweet Tomorrows, This Heart of Mine, Lost Love Found, The Love Slave, Love Wild and Fair). The whole concept of harem intrigue didn't really intrigue me to begin, and I became even less inclined to the idea as in reading book after book I encountered the same circumstances. Maybe life in bondage appeals to some women, but it does not appeal to me. Sorry, Bertie.

Summary: Not what I expected
Review: Although the book started out good, as it progressed I found it hard to overcome the cultural aspects of being part of a harem. I had tried to accept and understand when Selim had the four kadins including Cyra and how they shared him. But once he took on a the entire harem and called many of the woman to his bed as well as had other favorites, it was too hard for me to accept as an enjoyable romance. From a historical perspective it was very enlightening and interesting. Had I set my expectations for a history lesson, my review may have been different.

One of the reasons I selected this book is because of the reviews of others. I did not feel this was an extraordinary love story as it appeared to be from the other reviews.

Summary: Could not put it down!
Review: Simply a wonderful read! I have read every book Bertrice Small has ever written and this is one of my favorites. Her attention to detail makes you feel like you are her character. All of her characters are very strong people and they would have to be to survive the adventures they endure.

Summary: My most cherished book!!!
Review: This was the first book I read from Bertrice Small and it is without a doubt my favorite above all others. The characters became very real to me. I even have passages of the book memorized. To any of you out there who haven't read this book, do it today. I'm sure it will become one of your favorites, too

Summary: My all time favorite romance and I have read hundreds!
Review: I have reread this book many times and it never fails to entertain. If you have never read Ms. Small's work before, start with this one! Her characters are fabulous and her descriptions are vivid. The love story is exciting and the main story line is strong enough to carry you through decades effortlessly.

Summary: Beatrice Small is the Queen of Historical Romance Novels
Review: The Kadin shows the strength and sexuality of one courageous woman. Beatrice Small never fails to write a book that will make you laugh and break your heart.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: romantic and historic
Review: When I bought this novel I expected only a fluffy book, probably filled with cliches and sex. I was happily surprised to be wrong. The author has created an interesting heroine, who must negotiate difficult situations such as sharing a man she loves and surviving harem intrigues, and especially, a really interesting story which seems to fit within real historic facts. The details about culture and everyday life really bring the harem to life. Incidentally, there isn't much sex at all in this book. It's more romantic than sexy. It's an excellent story.

Summary: The relationships between selim and the women were unique.
Review: I fell in love with Selim. He had many different facet of relationships but never lost the true meaning of love with the one true love of his life which was cyra. I love the way Mrs. Small tied the relationship among the women together in a nice little package. The author shows that even two totally different cultures can unite and conqueor love.

Summary: The best I've ever read...and I read alot
Review: This book cought my attention and never let it go. I must admit i got into a lot of trouble when I couldn't put it down. I'm very picky about the books I read and this one got me. The scenes are written so intricatly and in detail you have to know. Plus who wouldn't want passion like the one betweem Cyra and Selim or Janet and Colly.

Rating: 5 stars
