Summary: Stuart remains queen of the romantic suspense sub-genre
Review:

Multi-millionaire Sally MacDowell, knowing that she will soon die, regrets that her son Alex disappeared almost two decades ago without ever returning. That abruptly changes when an individual, claiming to be Alex, arrives at Sally's home. The claimant insists that he wants to reconcile with his mother before she dies.

Carolyn Smith loves her Aunt Sally, who raised her as if she was her own daughter. Eighteen years ago, Carolyn adored Alex, following him around like a puppy dog. One night, she secretly trailed after him when h quietly walked to the nearby beach. She saw him meet someone, who shot and killed him. However, before she could report her observance, she was hospitalized with a severe case of pneumonia. The family members concluded that the feral Alex took off without a word as befitting his personality. Now, someone has arrived, claiming to be the deceased Alex and Aunt Sally believes him. Worse yet, Carolyn desperately wants to believe him too because she has fallen in love with the seductive intruder, who knows things that only she and Alex shared.

No one writes romantic intrigue better than multi-award winning Anne Stuart does. Her fifty plus novels all share in common the fact that they entertain, frighten, and caress the audience with their suspense and romance. The latest novel from the grandmistress of the sub-genre, SHADOW LOVER, is typical of the awesome author. The story line is filled with increasing danger and doubt while the intelligent characters bring wit and charm. Once again, it is obvious why newcomers are compared to the incomparable Ms. Stuart, who always makes reading a pleasure.

Summary: A modern day gothic with plenty of mystery and romance
Review: Although this may be the lightest of Anne Stuart's books, it still is one of the best! There is a is he, or isn't he-mystery along with a few scares, and great, sensual love scenes. The protagonists have a wonderful byplay that keeps you entertained. Loved this book!

Summary: This is a sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat kind of book...
Review: And make sure to start this book when you have plenty of time to finish, this is one book that is very, very hard to put down...

This was my second Anne Stuart book, and this one, so different in style from the first book I read by her, has established in my mind that this is a consistently top-notch author, no matter what the type of storyline.

Shadow Lover features a classic "bad boy" hero, yet at the same time he is surprisingly endearing, he grows on you. (Is that the fascination there is for that kind of hero - the challenge of making him a lovable man? I wonder).

Is he or isn't he? Is he who he says he is? Is he who she thinks he is? Or is he all of the above? Possibly none of the above? Previous reviewers have outlined the plot, but the part that was impressive for me was the way I, the reader, had my emotions tied in knots. One minute I thought - yes, he is! Then the next minute, no he's not! This is not so much about an ending - is he or isn't he? But rather the ride, it's sort of like an emotional roller coaster where you don't know where the roller coaster is going, you never know where Ms. Stuart is going to go next, but boy, do you care!

Anne Stuart is a master at manipulating emotions, and she is also a fabulous writer who can transmit a mood by just a few words. She is also an author with an instinctive knowledge of the human psyche. What her pen sometimes shows us is not always a very pretty sight - yet we know that it's true, nevertheless. Her understanding of both the good and the bad of human nature, and her talent in writing it realistically is what makes her an excellent writer, and her portrayal especially of the "dark side" is what gives her novels that *edge* - and an edge-of-your-seat reading experience.

I don't usually like these kind of dark and suspenseful novels, but Anne Stuart is such a good writer that I forgot that part. Oh, and did I mention that Anne Stuart is a good writer?

Summary: Once again Anne Stuart comes through!
Review: Ever since reading Anne Stuart's Ritual Sins, I can't seem to get enough of this author.

Shadow Lover was another Anne Stuart masterpeice. Dark, powerful, with many twists and turns. Eighteen years earlier, Alex MacDowell ran away leaving a distraut mother and Carolyn, the foster child. Now that his mother is on her deathbed, he's back. Is it the real Alex, or an imposter?

Throughout her childhood Carolyn Smith idolized Alex, even though he tormented her. On the night he left, Carolyn followed him to the beach and watched as someone shot him and murdered him. Now another Alex is in the picture and Carolyn has fallen in love with him. Has she fallen in love with an imposter?

Anne Stuart's Shadow Lover is one of those books that grab you from the beginning and you can't put it down until all questions are answered. This is a hands down must read!

Summary: A six star novel
Review: Excellent work by Anne Stuart, this book will keep you reading all the time, and when you can't read it because you are at work or at the movies, you will think about what will happen next in the book. The way that Alex-Sam makes his plans to know the truth about his life will not let you forget about the book until you finish it.

Summary: Not Anne Stuart at her best
Review: First let me just start by saying that I absolutely love Anne Stuart. I have a mission in my life to read every one of the boooks she has ever written. And I have read quite a few. But so far, I think this is the least likeable one. I have never read an author that can do better Historical Romance than Anne Stuart. She is brilliant. So, when I read this I was expecting something great. I will admit I was a tad bit disappointed. The main characters were somewhat weak and frail, though the story line was good. And the mystery behing the truth was great...the surprise ending was splendid. Leave it to Anne Stuart to make great surprise endings in anything she writes. But all in all, this book kind of dissapointed me. It was so hard to get into from the beginning that I had to force myself to keep going. I was glad I did, though, because the ending was good and the solved mystery was good...with a few last minute added mysteries of its own. I guess in the long run, this was not Anne Stuart material. I know she could have done better, and she has! But as you can see from the other reviews, everyone loved this book. Do not let mine discourage your need to read this novel, for I could be the reason I did not like this so much...it could just be me. :)

Summary: "Sommersby/Return of Martin Guerre", Anne Stuart style.
Review: I enjoy Anne Stuart's books. She has a really twisted mind, lol. Her heroes ranged from spies, sorcerers, heretics, conmen, and even the Grim Reaper himself! If you want a ride to the darker side of love, where lust, danger, and obsession blend into one exciting shade, read this book.

The mystery is very good. I never know whether Alex is really Alex or not until the very end. And Anne Stuart writes very well.

And I find the characters memorable as well. The dear heroine initially is a doormat, but gradually she regains her backbone. The hero is an intriguing rogue. They make me smile.

Summary: My favorite 1999 book!
Review: I've been reading Anne Stuart's books, since I first started reading romance. She never lets me down. Shadow lover is simply an excellent book. I love the Anastasia type stories where you never know who's who. This is one of those. Throw in the mystery, along with some sexy love scenes, and you just have one great book.
