Summary: LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!
Review: i cannot express to all you guys out there how much i looooove this book. its sooo good, my book is literally falling apart thats how many times ive read it. to all you who dont like violence or like characters and plots that are so picture perfect that they wanna make you gag, this book aint for you. this book describes realistically the brutal and violent Medieval times where honor and power where everything. but aside from that, this book is romance at its best, a beautiful romantic story that still captivates me after so long, so you must read it!!

Summary: Looks Like I'm In The Minority. Oh Well!!
Review: I guess this is what I get for reading a medeival romance. I tried taking the time setting into account while reading this absolutely awful story, but it didn't work. I just cannot believe that all Norman men in this time period would act like such abusive pigs. The heroine loses her father during this Norman-Saxon war, watches as a ton of Norman men storm her home, brutalize her mother and rape village women she has known since childhood. The hero strolls in the next day declaring himself the new lord. He knows of the horror she has gone through, he knows that she has lost her father, and he knows that she has had to watch her mother and friends get brutalized, and what does he do?!

He declares her his own slave, announces he is going to tame her when he receives some hostility from her, and forces her to sleep with him. Oh, and he also humiliates her by forcing her to strip for him as punishment for lying to him about her betrothed.

Some reviewers said how considerate the hero was for giving the heroine time(Only a handful of Days!!) to adjust herself to him before forcing himself on her. I respect others opinions, but mine was different.

Well, I guess I learned one thing from this story. I am never going to buy another medeival romance. This was enough.

Summary: JoycRomance
Review: I love romance but I don't like mushy romance. The Wolf and the Dove was the best romance story I have ever read and trust me, there are few that I haven't read. The story had depth, the characters came alive and I cared about what happened to them. I have read all of Ms. Woodiwiss's books but she reached her pinnacle in the Wolf & the Dove! Yes, I too have re-read it about 4 times! It's still leaves me breathless!

Summary: Heads above a tired genre
Review: What can I say? Read this at 13 and reread it many times since.

Good things: Historical action with a taste of reality. Language that doesn't bog down in dialect (VERY modern despite some complaints otherwise!). Supporting charactors have flesh and blood rather than serve as props. Heroine and Hero have good chemistry. Earthy Medieval language...(remember privacy back then wasn't really a concept the same way it is today)

The bad, or unfortunate: Repetition of charactors ideas and motivators...OKAY Wulfgar, we GET that you HATE women! Explaining rather than showing the reader (one section describes another through the eyes of Aislinn, when a real nice interaction between the two would have revealed more and been a bit more fun to read). And despite the good charactors, the "bad guys" are so transparent that it's pretty obvious that all the energy is focused on the "love affair." This is a medieval taming of the shrew with not enough sauce and excitement once she is tamed. The climactic ending kind of makes a reader think, DUH! couldn't they see these people were going to betray them?

I know some readers will blanche at the notion that the Middle Ages were as violent as the book portrays, but in fact it probably would have been tougher than Ms Woodiwiss portrays. Honestly speaking Wulfgar would have sent the Mother to a convent, if she was lucky, married Aislinn to secure his land and killed Ragnor in chapter 9 or 10. Rape, etc, is a kind of specious argument, so discard it and realize the context of the times: Norman invasion, end of Saxon rule and a caste order etched pretty strongly in everyones minds...class warfare is a latter century issue. For sure!

The detail of life, though with a few flaws here and there, is something of a treat. Why? Because a lot of these books spend inordinate amounts of time basting the reader in internal dialogues that make you wonder if the woman they are about isn't so much fluff (with wildly beautiful hair/eyes/breasts etc).

Alright, grab a copy from a z-shop (no I'm not selling it!) and settle down for a real nice read. I mean it! I have read some of her other stuff, but none of it compares. It's written in the style of a 30's or 40's movie with all the grand sweep of charactors and action. It doesn't ask you too much and why should it? It's a little escape into the heart of a Saxon Maid and her Norman Knight.

Enjoy, forget the violence, it was real back then, compared to today's gratuitous garbage. And finally, rape or no, women back then were little more than the key to real estate. Courtly love hadn't been considered and the name of the game was land aquisition!

Besides, love conquers all!

Summary: great book
Review: i LOVE this book. its soo, so so good, ive read it countless times. and forget what other people say, the rape scene was essential to the plot, andf a reality in those times. its a beautifully written story with wonderful characters. its almost as good as ashes in the wind. i highly recommend it

Summary: GOOD SEX
Review: Although reading medieval dialect was strenuous, the relationship of Aisliin and Wulgar is pretty sexy. This one can really fulfill vicariously any fantasies of violent sex. TRULY RACY. However, I must say Woodwiss has a weakness for 1-dimensional characters. To evoke sympathy for the leading man Wulfgar, she gave him a background as an unloved illegitimate child. So when Aislinn makes a comment, he goes into an All-I-wanted-was-love-from-my-mother and aw! You feel sorry for the guy. Except me, I was laughing; I beg pardon from those who said aw! I must say I skimmed quickly over the secondary plot which was something about the Saxons and the Normans crap. Instead, I focused more on the sex scenes, which were done pretty well. Other rather awkward aspect is how Aislinn is constantly compared to a passive dove and Wulfgar is the dangerously, aggressively sexual wolf. I thought the animal similes were repeated too much.

Summary: fantastic
Review: All of these books are absolutely great. The Flame and the Flower was my first intro to this author. My daughters also. She is now an avid reader of Kathleen Woodiwiss. She actually re-reads the books several times when she feels the need.Neither of us can wait until her next book comes out.
