Rating: Summary: A romance masterpiece Review: When reading a Woodiwiss book, do any of you female readers pretend the main male characters are actors or rock stars? When I first read this book, I pictured David Lee Roth as Ragnar and Alex Van Halen as Wulfgar. Then, a few years later, after I reread it, I pictured Kenneth Branagh as Wulfgar and Rufus Sewell as Ragnar. Lately, I've been picturing Russell Crowe as Wulfgar. This has absolutely nothing to do with what the book is about! I just wanted to write about my fantasies. Hee hee! But seriously, folks, I feel this is her best. Her latest efforts cannot compare, but then, she's older now and even Hemingway wrote some duds! I think the problem with her latest tomes is the fact that they are lacking sexual tension. I love books that take 50-100 pages to lead up to the first sex scene. I love foreplay. Hey, didn't most women write to Dear Abby that they like foreplay better than sex! Same way with romance books for me! If you like escapist romance novels, this is for you. If you've always wanted to try a Woodiwiss novel, buy this one first!
Rating: Summary: The Wolf and The Dove Review: This is the best historical romance I've ever read. The cover is worn bare because I keep reading it over and over. Aislinn is the most incredible heroine but Wulfgar is by far the best hero I've ever read. The characters of this book have awesome depth and the history is perfection. I was wrapped around her finger in the introduction. I've read hundreds of historicals but there's just something about this one... It's steamy and passionate but it's logical and sensitive at the same time. I could so visualize Wulgar rescuing Aislinn from her falling horse in the streets of London. I could smell the smells and hear the sounds. They just don't get any better than this!!!!
Rating: Summary: This book was incredible from start to finish! Review: This was my first K. Woodiwiss novel. I was a bit hesitant to read it after reading the negative reviews here. I just finished the book and found no justification for the complaints written. Yes, there is a rape in the beginning. Yes, the Saxons were treated horribly by the invading Normans. But, people! It was the year 1066! Frankly, the reality of the Norman Invasion was probably much more disturbing than what was described in the novel. And at least (unlike in Catherine Coulter's "Devil's Embrace), it's not hero of the story raping the heroine. Now that book was disturbing. But I digress...This was a fabulous historical romance. I only have two complaints: the love scenes were EXTREMELY tame. I mean, most of the time the author just says they did it and leaves it at that. Secondly, the author gets a little wordy in the war scenes. I understand she wanted to provide a little background and maybe the story would have suffered without them, but I just skimmed those pages. I cannot say enough about this book. I want to recommend it without giving away too much of the plot. If like medieval romance, you won't be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: A great Woodiwiss, but not the best medieval ever written... Review: I beg to differ with most of the reviews for this classic. It was a great book, a real classic Woodiwiss, but definately not my favorite medieval romance. I thought 'The Flame and the Flower' was a much better book by her. The problem with 'The Wolf and the Dove' was the endless talk and day to day activity in the castle. I grew bored with it and wished for some serious action scenes or battle scenes since it was taking place during the rein of William the Conqueror in 1066. It was sorely lacking in that department and from the on I lost interest. The plot was solely centered around the female lead and male lead and not much interaction with the vivid history around them. I also agree with another reviewer that said this book lagged and got a little boring then it picked up later on. The characters were well written and the story very real, but the plot kinda dragged. Too much centering on the little squabbles between the two main characters. I also thought the female lead of Aislinn was too forgiving and didn't seem to take what happened to her father and mother seriously enough to fight off the male lead of Wulfgar. It kind of bothered me and hindered the story. What they did to her family and herself for that matter was unforgivable and she seemed to just accept her fate and brushed her 'horror' off like some trivial incident. While the male lead of Wulfgar seemed to be stuck on his childhood ordeal of being a 'bastard' to a knight and cast aside. We as the reader are supposed to feel bad for him and sympathize with his plight, but we're also supposed to forgive and forget what he and his men do to Aislinn and her family. I found that hard to swallow and therefore found the tale not the best in medieval romance by a long shot...try instead 'Kingdom of Dreams' by Judith McNaught for the very best in medieval romance. ~Wulfgar, the 'Iron Wolf of Normandy' sweeps in like some bringer of death when he and his men desend on the hapless village of a Saxon princess and her proud family. He intends to claim it as his own, due his prize for helping William, the Conqueror King who finally took England as his own in 1066. What he is not expecting is a stunning woman of strong will who does not bend to his whim just because he is the 'Iron Wolf' everyone fears. The Norman knight must fight for her love as her hatred burns for him and his kind before another would claim her as his own... Aislinn is not prepared for the fires that burn in her treacherous heart to betray her when she falls for the Norman knight who destroyed her home and family. But what is worse? The Norman knight who claims her as his own, or the one who is willing to kill to make her his own...The Iron Wolf must find who is traitor and who would try to take what is his. Blood and loyalty will threaten to seperate these two unlikely mates...but true love always finds a way... Tracy Talley~@
Rating: Summary: KW always writes ten star books!!!! Review: This book is no exception! KW is truly a gifted writer and I know that when I sit down to read one of her books, I am not getting up until it is finished. Wulf and Aislinn had it all. The love and the sexiness, the humor, even the tears. They were well suited in every area and I loved how Aislinn came through her horrible ideal as such a lovely person. This book is a treasure and is now residing on my keepers shelf along with all the rest of KW's books!
Rating: Summary: Ye Olde Romance, with one problem... Review: Past the now-stereotypical Alpha Male and fiesty female who nonetheless is too scared to speak up when it's actually important, allowing Big Misunderstandings to fester... there is a simply *ridiculous* 'plot twist' lurking ahead of you, that, for me, just blew suspension of disbelief out of the water. Avoiding spoilers, I can only assume that the point of it was some sort of idealisation of the heroine's purity, since it wasn't necessary to prove the other thing that it proved... there was other evidence for that. Still. Expect to crack up laughing near the end when this 'mystery' is revealed.
Rating: Summary: Impressed! Review: This is my first Woodiwiss book, and beleive me it wont be the last. It just has everything that you would want in a romance novel. When I first downloaded it I was shocked at how long it was. I thought for sure this is going to be sooooo boring. However I was pleasantly surprised at how it stayed interesting from beginning to end. I would definetly recomend it if you have a day or two to spare.
Rating: Summary: Strength & Spirit Unite! Review: This is one of my all time favorite books. Kathleen Woodiwiss brought me back in time to this wonderful dark time. Oh all the hero's and fictional men I have read about. Wulfgar fit my minds image better than any other. I enjoyed the dialog between the two characters. I enjoyed Aislinn's courageous spirit. I always wanted to see this book made into a movie. Perhaps one day. I have the hardback version in my collection and I read it every other year just to reminisce. I won't give the story away though. You need to read it for yourself. I am proud to say, I met and married my own Wulfgar 12 years ago!
Rating: Summary: AMAZING!!! Review: I Loved this book from beginning to end...You fall in love w/ the characters Aislinn and Wulfgar. Have some tissue close by while reading...It's Excellent!
Rating: Summary: The Long and Short of it Review: The Good thing about a Kathleen Woodiwiss novel is that they are generally long. The down side of it is her plots get alittle bit mundane rather than keeping the reader in suspense. A bit like the difference between a sprinter and a cross country runner. One is short fast and gets right to the point the other is long, can drag on and lacks the excitement of shorter novels. Though that is not to say that a good author could not do something to combine the two. This novel as all the novels of Kathleen Woodiwiss's that I have read sometimes can get a bit mundane. I bought this because someone I knew highly recommended it.
