Summary: Morvan's story continued...
Review: The main characters - Anna and Morvan - were well shown. I enjoyed the way the story unfolded and the tricks and turns Ms. Hunter included throughout. Both survivors of the Black Plague, these two medieval warriors battle both on the field and off! Their story is poignant and yet at times humorous. It has a nice balance of scenery, characters, and history. Some of her people believed Anna to be a saint, others were not sure about being led by a female "lord". Then you have Morvan who was English which was not the thing to be at that time in that place! Which is the lesser of the two evils - female or English. Ahhhh, that is the question and it was answered over many wonderful chapters.

I was glad to see Morvan back and look forward to the next book (I believe the title from the excerpt was, "A Thousand Knights"). From what I read, it looks to be another installment as it mentions Harclow (Morvan's home lost by a siege in which his father was killed).

An adventurous read which can keep you glued to your chair late into the evening! I recommend this one to all Madeline Hunter fans and anyone looking for a good escape for an evening. I found it went quite well with M&M candies. Please just don't tell my son where his little bag went!

Summary: REALLY, REALLY GOOD BOOK
Review: THE PROTECTOR is a well-written historical romance where the hero, Morvan, and the the heroine, Anna, are from rival sides in a long-standing nationality feud. Yet Anna, head of her estate, comes to the rescue of Morvan while he is in distress. As a result of that sefless gesture, Morvan pledges his protection to Anna, her family and her estate.
It isn't long before that protection becomes necessary when a lifelong foe reemerges to overtake the estate.
Through their shared struggles for survival, Morvana nd Anna develop a beautiful, intimate romance in which each is forced to face his and her own vulnerability.
THE PROTECTOR is a romance lover's dream.

Summary: A Very Good Book
Review: The relationship that emerges between Morvan and Anna is a testament to the power of the human spirit. Both of them survive the plague and both have been alone for a very long time. Anna being an heiress seems unreachable for Morvan. But fate intervenes and brings about their union. Hunter write very well.

Summary: DO NOT READ THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: This is one of the most horrible books I have ever read! Morvan was a sexist and controlling person and took away all of Anna's rights. He gave her a gift that she was overjoyed about, but it was something he had taken away from her in the first place. Anyone who values herself as a woman should stay away from this book. I was so disgusted halfway through that I only skimmed the second half. I also would suggest that no men read this in case they get any bad ideas. This book is a waste of time and money. Stay away!

Summary: Good Romance
Review: This really deserves 3 and half stars, but 3 is too little. I think Ms. Hunter has wonderful writing skills, and I do love her plot here, however, I never felt the atmosphere of the time period as I have in her other works. We could have had a little more angst with the plague, more superstition, and a few masses said here and there, a little grit to go with all the tough characters. I feel more atmosphere is needed. The hero, Morvan, is absolutely wonderful, the best character in the story, and I felt he really fell in love with the heroine. It is the heroine that I could not believe in much. Though strong and likable, her wanting to be independent went on much too long. It was like, okay, she is independent and her own woman, but enough! And I never felt she loved the hero much. I never felt she was a medieval woman, but a modern one in costume. Emotionally, she just wasn't there for me, not developed. However, it's a good read. It's not a bad book and I do recommend it. It's just not the writer's best work. Nice dialogue.

Summary: Excellent Writing and Plot/Terrible Hero
Review: This story had a lot of potential. The Black Plague was an intriguing background story. Also, the author is an excellent writer and really suceeds in bringing out the time period. Unfortunately, the hero of the story, Morovan, is a real jerk, and he never redeems himself. The heros in Hunter's novels are generally dominating and without humor. Morovan was extreme in both these character traits. So much so, that I found myself wishing Anna would dump him. This would have been a great medieval romance if Anna had an HEA with someone else.

Summary: Good book, but read in sequence.
Review: This was a good book, but readers will soon become aware (if they are not already) that some of the characters had already been introduced in previous books. Therefore, I recommend that Ms. Hunters books be read in order.

Summary: Intelligent and gripping!
Review: With The Protector author Madeline Hunter has written an intelligent and compelling medieval which confirms her status as one of the best new authors in the genre. Since the editorial and the other customer reviewers have already outlined the story quite well, I'll focus on the elements which made this story a memorable read and true keeper for me. Suffice it to say that it's set in Brittany and England in 1348 and at the time the Plague had begun it's devastating sweep across Europe.

The Protector is the story of Morvan Fitzwaryn (Christiana's brother, and already introduced in By Arrangement) and Breton noblewoman cum warriorlady Anna de Leon of La Roche de Roald. Madeline Hunter provides us with a beautiful, passionate friendship which grows into a deep love. It stands out by it's fine characterization, truly memorable characters, exciting action, good but not overwhelming historical detail, sweeping story and humour. And certainly the extreme conditions of the plague makes it quite intense.

Both Anna and Morvan are strong, fascinating and likeable characters and they won my heart immediately. Though they travel a bumpy road in their relationship with each other, it's wonderful to see how they learn to compromise. With Anna Madeline Hunter delivers commentary on the position of women during that time. Women were considered mere chattels and possessions. Anna is strong and independent and manages eventually to remain so even after she has married Morvan. Further there's a nice revesal of roles here: on several occassions Anna saves Morvan.

Morvan's sister Christiana (the heroine of By Arrangement) and David have a guest part here. Further I very much enjoyed Anna's tutor the knight/priest Ascanio.

Anyway I recommend The Protector very highly!
