Rating: Summary: Another Winner from Hunter Review: I rather fell in like with Morvan when he was first introduced in the prequel - 'By Arrangement' - a little overbearing but so wonderfully protective of his sister. But, my oh my, when you really get to meet him in The Protector, wow...you can fall in love. He is one of those big, strong, take control kind of guys with honor. The kind that you can really depend on. The rub to this was that his heart's desire, Anna de Leon, was something of an Amazon type and well able to take care of herself. Just watch the sparks fly! This novel is sensually powerful, and wonderfully written as are the rest of her series set in this medeival era. Ms. Hunter just keeps getting better and better and is a must on my buy list for anything else she comes out with. A real keeper - loved it!
Rating: Summary: Go to the library and check this out before you buy it. Review: I read alot and always enjoy trying a little of this and that and enjoy trying out new authors. I really did try to read this book and finish it, but it just didn't do anything for me. It was boring and endless. It made no sense to me for a woman warrior, raised in a nunnery or not, to be so nieve about what went on between men and women. I haven't read anything else by this author nor will I.
Rating: Summary: Love can conquer all - even the "Black Death" Review: I really enjoyed this story by Madeline Hunter. It starts out with a Knight tending a "charge" who is dying quickly from the plague - The Black Death. This is the first romance that I have read that deals with the Black Death in a way that it talks about the terror that villages felt as well as those who were dying, as well as those who were left alive. It also deals with a "almost rape" from the past in a way that makes it believable. It is also a wonderful love story as two very strong characters come together first out of necessity then out of love.
Rating: Summary: Good Grief! No Wonder Feminists Exist! Review: I'm a big fan of romance novels, but PLEASE, give us a hero who at least respects his wife! Contrary to Morvan thinking Anna was nothing short of ignorant, she still had to save his sorry hide! She should have left him with the enemy.
Rating: Summary: The way historical romance ought to be Review: I've loved all of Madeline Hunter's work so far, and my admiration just increased with The Protector. There's none of the overblown melodrama that often derails historical romance. You're involved with the characters, in a way that is really special. You really can't stand that Morvan took Anna's bow and sword away, even though you know he's probably right. You can FEEL their indecision and confusion and reluctant love for each other. And you're just so happy when he gives the sword and bow back, and when they realize that they can compromise and be together the way they both need to be. It's Happy Ever After but it's not easy and it's not pat and it's not melodrama. THAT is good historical romance writing. Madeline Hunter, like Shana Abe and Elizabeth Elliott, kind of makes everyone else's efforts pale by comparison
Rating: Summary: Another New But Worthy Author... Review: I've never read a romance novel using the "Black death" as plot before. I've read/heard of it in school but have never read it used in any of my historical romance readings. That is why I find this book very interesting. I'm impressed by the way Ms. Hunter did her research regarding this topic. She also implemented it very well. She mixed the facts with fiction, narrating it so vividly, you can almost feel the fear and sadness of the people. The deep insight of someone who's expecting/waiting to die was spine chilling and heart breaking at the same time. Anna and Morvan's love story is convincing and beautiful. Started out as strangers, then honor bound to help each other, formed a special friendship then it flourished to love. Of course, between all that, there's the battle of wills & small rebellions here and there. There's lots of trial and error, learning & adjusting to one another. The best part of their relationship, in my opinion, is the compromise. The bargaining, the offering and the acceptance. Utterly heart warming! I notice a slight anachronism especially in the heroines character and attitude but I manage to bypass that part and simply enjoy it as it is, mainly because the overall story was truly well written. Characters are brilliantly put together and even the action scenes, which I'm normally not fond of, surprisingly excited me. There's none of those horrendous and overly detailed battle scenes. It's simple, fast and straight to the point but not lacking at all. Just the way I like it. This is only my first book of Madeline Hunter and certainly not the last. I have already ordered all of her previous books, the BY ARRANGEMENT (story of Morvan's sister), BY POSSESSION and BY DESIGN. All three are all supposedly linked together. LORD OF A THOUSAND NIGHTS (story of Ian) is Madeline Hunter's upcoming novel, which is also connected to Morvan. I wonder if he is the same Ian, kinsman of Elizabeth in this book. Well, I certainly can't wait to read all of Madeline Hunter's work. I hope she is as good as the ravings. But if she uses the same style and keeps up this kind of manner in her writing here in THE PROTECTOR, then I shall not be disappointed.

Rating: Summary: Didn't Like How Anna Was Stripped of her Dignity Review: In other books by this great author, we have heroines kneeling for whatever reason and I found none of it offensive (because of the century and the context of the story) but somehow it didn't work here, perhaps because other heroines never had their dignity taken away in such a deliberate manner by the hero. That seemed the extent of the story to me, Morvan insisting Anna turn into an air-headed submissive woman.
Rating: Summary: exciting medieval romance Review: In the middle of the fourteenth century in Breton, Morvan Fitzwaryn expects to soon die from the Black Plague if not from the angry peasants fearing his illness. However, Lady Anna de Leon, dressed in warrior garb, rescues Morvan from the irate mob and later helps nurse him back to health. Morvan, attracted to Anna, joins her forces not out of gratitude, but out of a desire to keep the warrior woman safe. As his attraction turns to love, her feelings lead to denial because no man wants a woman as tall and tough as Anna. Instead she believes he is after the family estate as much as the knights besieging her castle is. Morvan knows Anna is more than just a beauty, she is the woman he loves, but to persuade her will take quite an attack on her heart on his part. THE PROTECTOR is an exciting medieval romance that is worth reading and rereading by fans due to the depth of the key cast members, especially the lead couple. Morvan is a warm PROTECTOR whose beloved does not want his safekeeping yet cannot resist him. Anna shows no fear in leading her men into combat yet is fully frightened by her growing feelings for Morvan. As has become the case with Madeline Hunter in recent years, readers will rank her latest novel as one of the best sub-genre entries for 2001. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: Can't Believe This Is The Same Morvan! Review: Like many readers, I adored Morvan Fitzwaryn in Ian & Reyna's book, but he turned out to be less than perfect here. He was kind of jerk, actually. My main problem with this book was that Morvan was not humble or appreciative of everything that just fell into his lap; it was more like - he wanted it, he should have it.
