Summary: Look closer...
Review: If you do, you'll see a magnificent book! Jude Deveraux should get an award for being so true to the times she writes about. This book is chalk full of historical detail! I learned much about the medival times by reading a book I liked! Not many books can bost that. The first hundred pages were... well, they were a bit discuraging. I thought that Rogan was a complete pig who thought nothing about his wife, and Lianna was just a mindless shell who let her maid rule her life. But, when Lianna gets her spine, look out! You'll see the feistyness in her, and you will be amazed. It is so cute to watch the two fall in love. With Rogan's rock solid exterior, you'd expect him to be incapable of love. But, Liana gets to him, and he becomes a man you'd love to love for yourself. This book starts out slow, but picks up speed and wins your heart as you go. You will picture Rogan's home vivedly, and will rout for Liana with all of your heart. You will wonder who the Lady is, and want to hit Rogan's brother, Severn, on the head with a huge boulder just to get him to shut up. Let me say again that the begining of _The Taming_ is discoraging, but it is so much better as you get into it. Jude Deveraux's words come alive on the page, and it will make you want to go to England and find your own Rogan. The chemistry between him and Liana was electric... this book is one you can not miss! Read this classic by Jude Deveraux, you will not be dissapointed. Highly recomended.

Summary: Another Beautiful story
Review: It seemed that all Rogan knew about life was trying to get revenge, and that he was dead to everything else, but Liana slowly taught him the meaning of love. At the beginning, i wanted to hit Rogan on top of the head with a chair because he being such a jerk to Liana, but the characters were great and i loved the story.

Summary: great book
Review: jude devereaux should be commended for always being realistic to the time period she writes about. rogan WAS a jerk, but i presume that most men in the medieval age would have been chauvinists. liana is a great character, strong in everyday things, but weak when it comes to her looks and other stuff. like all j.d. books, you want to kill the hero at some points, but in the end you love him anyway.

Summary: Not very memorable
Review: Liana Neville is a rich heiress surrounded by suitors interested only in her money. But then she stumbles upon the dirty and bullying Rogan Peregrine. He stands out in the crowd and she finally agrees to marry him - only to regret it soon afterwards. The man refuses to notice her or treat her as a wife, while keeping his 7 mistresses - one for each day. Liana believes that if she accepts his whims he will finally realise that he loves her. Luckily, after a while she's had enough of the situation and tries to kill both him and one of his mistresses. Naturally he's furious, but their relationship improves while Liana continues to turn his life upside down.

Apart from some good moments, the book fails to engage me as a reader. Either what happens I cannot feel sympathy towards the characters : Liana is really dumb to put up with Rogan stupid behaviour, while Rogan is just the ordinary male chauvinist. Psychologically, none of them makes much sense, and both the characters and the storyline seems to be unfinished and messy. The language is tolerable, but it lacks the good lines and the humour that belongs to a good story.

Summary: The title is appropriate since the hero is an animal
Review: Okay. I'll grant that this novel is unique. The hero is certainly flawed--in fact, that's an understatement. I even like flawed heroes and love seeing one "tamed." However, this hero was almost too flawed. There was no legitimate reason for Liana to fall in love with him so quickly. Indeed, there were many reasons for her to hate him. She's annoyed that so many of her suitors only want her for money, but then she agrees to marry a man whose words and actions make it clear that that's ALL he wants her for (he doesn't even want to bed her initially). He bargains for more riches right before the wedding, misses his wedding feast to count his money, rapes his new wife during the feast to protect against an annulment, takes her to a filthy hovel to live, beds other women rather than her, can't even remember her name, . . . I could go on. So, I ask you, why would the heroine have such a tenacious desire to make the hero love her? It just doesn't make sense. I almost put this book down so many times, but I stopped myself because I thought I'd enjoy seeing the hero brought to his knees by the love I knew he'd eventually feel for the heroine. While he isn't brought to his knees until the end, she does gradually tame this animal of a husband.

Despite all this, I must admit, however, that the ending of this novel is one of the most heart-wrenching I've ever read. When the hero finally does realize all that Liana meant to him, he breaks down and this is so romantic. In fact, the ending almost made it worth all the teeth gritting I did throughout the novel.

Review: One of Jude's more overlooked books, 'The Taming' is classic Deveraux, and you definitely won't be disappointed. Yes, boys and girls, it's even better (in this gal's opinion) than 'Knight in Shining Armor' (though it's a close second).

'The Taming' starts out as your typical medieval romance. Liana Neville is a heiress in need of a husband, but she won't marry just anyone. She actually sets her sights on Sir Rogan Peregrine, who happens to be the realm's most filthy knight. Yep, you heard me -- he's dirty and dirt poor. He's also handsome and smart and treats plain-faced Liana differently than everyone else has -- so she marries him. Of course, it doesn't turn out just how naive Liana expects it to, and you'll find yourself utterly surprised at this storyline.

I suppose the reason that I love this Deveraux book so much is that it's definitely a twist away from the normal. The castle that poor Liana is shipped off to live in with her husband is an absolute pig-sty (described to a tee, I might add), and the way warlike Rogan treats his silly, gentle wife made me smile--he has NO idea of what to do with her.

The other thing I really liked about this book is Liana herself. Rogan is fairly one-dimensional overall, but Liana is so very NORMAL compared to most romance novel heroines that I found myself loving her. She's no ravishing beauty or dashing vixen or witty conversationalist. She's just herself -- naive, a bit spoiled, and head over heels in love with a husband that ignores her. She reacts exactly as I feel that I might react myself to a lot of situations -- she's very much an 'Everygirl' for those of you that are tired of the too-perfect heroines of other novels.

I cannot stress enough how much I enjoy this book (it remains on the top of my list of all time favorites).

Summary: who would want to marry the hero of this book?
Review: Rogan is a flea infested male chauvanist, greedy and brutal. There is not an ounce of romance in this character, and the heroine would have been better off with the man who wanted her early in the book. Sorry folks, but this is not a romance, it is a fantasy.

Summary: Definitely TAMING...
Review: SEQUEL: THE CONQUEST

It's been awhile since I've read a Jude Deveraux book and I sure missed her style. She's in my top 3 favorite author list and reading THE TAMING reminded me of why. I've read plenty of romance book with humor in it but only a few can really make me laugh out loud. In this one, you smile, chuckle, giggle and yes, laugh out loud. I won't even try to relate a scene or two here. I highly recommend you pick up this book and find out (laugh out) yourself. This book is not only full of humor, it's heart warming, heart soaring and highly provocative.

READ Amazon for book synopsis:

Rogan, oh my... I have a lot to say about this guy! Filthy-as in defiled with dirt and fleas!, very ungentlemanly, dull, harsh, barbaric, ungrateful, lout, full of hate.... oh i can go on and on with a long list of his deficiency but i must say, I enjoyed his character immensely. Just as I have enjoyed Lianna. The rich, beautiful and the daring Lianna. She who is sensible, capable, CLEAN, organized and oh so hopelessly in love, Lianna. Both unmatched yet benefitted each other in the end. Yes, yes, Rogan is definitely FLAWED but... well, you must read this book to understand and to see through him. Despite all this rough exterior, he is actually a very sensitive man. He is very capable of tenderness, capable of showing affection. Unconsciously, he craves for love. All he needed was a gentle TAMING, just as the book is titled. This isn't like those usual DARK-hero-longing-for-love-and-then-tamed kindda story though. It's different. It's more profound. Intriguing with mixture of humor. My favorite part of this book is Rogan and Lianna's getting to know one another, their adjustment to each other - full of internal conflicts that makes their love for each other more convincing. I was also very surprise to read that one part of Zared's twist. Oh my, I think readers shouldn't read THE CONQUEST synopsis before reading this book, that way you too will be surprise. The Conquest is Zared's book and the sequel for THE TAMING, by the way.

My only compaint here is how the book ended. I think that was a bit rush, I was not satisfied. I wanted a deeper emotional confession. I wanted more goose-bumps alert scenes for the conclusion. Or perhaps I just didn't want this book to end? Anyway, the reason why I still rated this book a fiver despite that small complaint was because I really did enjoy it. In fact, I love this book and shall reread it anytime soon. Also, this book has sequel, THE CONQUEST, so perhaps it was meant to end that way, as hanging to induce reader to read the sequel. I sure am piqued and will definitely read the second book. Afterall, ZARED alone had already piqued my interest. Read THE TAMING, you won't regret it. I sure didn't.
