Rating: Summary: Could have been better. Review: I read Dale Hudson's An Hour To Kill just prior to reading this book. It was also a story highlighting a top-notched investigation which nailed a murderer that seemed almost impossible to convict. Unless you are a member of the auxillary police, love to talk cop jargon and hang out with Joe Friday, I wouldn't recommend reading this book. The story is there, but somehow it lost something in the translation. It could have been better.
Rating: Summary: Chilling to read but you can't put it down. Review: It is truly chilling to get to know the minds behind the monsters that are portrayed in this book. To think that these people thought they would walk away and profit from such vicious acts just blows your mind. For me, this book was hard to read because the writing was so realistic. The authour goes to great lengths to re-enact the grim crime and the following pursuit in a way that brings the reader into the action. I have always loved a great cop story and this one now tops my list. These detectives really showed tenacity, creativity and dedication to solving this crime. I join the author in celebrating a job well done by the detectives. If you enjoy the ride of a true chase, you will love this book.
Rating: Summary: MONSTERS ARE REAL! Review: The book is totally shocking. I am a calvinistic christian--which means I believe in the doctrine of the total depravity of man. And this book goes a long way to verifying that doctrine in a practical way. This book shows that humankind is capable of the most hideous crimes imaginable. How can people be so unfeeling? Dana Ewell and Joel Radovcich show themselves to be completely heartless. Dana Ewell hires Rodovcich to murder his father, mother, and sister-- a mission that Rodovcich carries out with the cool professionalism of an experienced hitman. The book takes the reader from point "A", the finding of the victims, to point "b", the intensive three year investigation, and finally to point "c" the ultimate conviction of both Ewell and Radovcich. My only complaint with the book is the ridiculous amount of profanity. No book needs to bombard the reader with such a massive amount of vulgarities.
Rating: Summary: detectives were vain not thorough Review: The book lacked authenticity from start to finish. Important facts that contradicted the story were simply ignored and left out. The detectives involved come off as totally vain and angry, envious people, looking to find a high profile case like the Billionaire Boys Club or Menendez brothers murder cases. What these detectives were looking for was their own personal glory. How sick is that.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST TRUE CRIME STORY EVER! Review: THE BOOK WAS VERY EASY TO READ. MR. HANADEL BROUGHT TO LIFE THE STRUGGLE OF HEROIC DETECTIVE JOHN SOUZA. THE BOOK SPOKE VOLUMES ABOUT THE GUILT OF DANA AND JOEL. THIS IS THE BEST TRUE CRIME BOOK I HAVE EVER READ. ONCE I STARTED TO READ IT I WAS UNABLE TO PUT IT DOWN.
Rating: Summary: A well-written, albeit one-sided, story on the Ewell murders Review: This book is an interesting and compelling narrative of the police investigation into the Ewell murders. However, it's written from the perspective of the Fresno detectives and seems biased at times. There is also a bit of fantasy, presuming that the author really knows what was going through the minds of Dana Ewell and Joel Radoczich during and after the murders. Unfortunately, we will never know the whole truth unless one of the convicted killers decides to write a book.
Rating: Summary: Is Dana Ewell REALLY guilty?? Think! Review: This was a good book if you read it from the detectives point of view but it is very one-sided. After reading this book I am not convinced that Dana is guilty of this horrible crime. It appears to me that the detectives were hell bent on getting a conviction on Dana at all costs and this book is merely a pat on the back to the detectives. There are too many unanswered questions. Too many people benefited from the deaths of the Ewell family not just Dana and some are benefiting now that Dana is in prison and the inheretance money has been redistributed. Are we 100% sure that Dana is guilty and should be locked up for the rest of his life? I for one am not.
Rating: Summary: Great book, Great Story Review: This was a great book. I have never had a cross-country flight go by so fast. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. It is amazing to me how the detectives were able to piece together the way in which the crime was committed and the determination they showed over so many years in meticulously gathering the evidence necessary to bring the perpetrators to justice. It gives a true picture of a murder investigation instead of the typical TV version where the crime is committed at the start of the hour and is solved by then end. The book takes you through the entire investigation in great detail without losing your interest. In fact, the more detail you get the more you want to know and it is truly impressive how the police were able to essentially figure out all of the necessary details without any cooperation from the suspects. This is a great story that is very well written and I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in True Crime books and our criminal justice system in general.
