Rating: Summary: My favourite book since I was a child... Review: When I was about 12 years old, my Uncle Mike noticed that I loved to read, and he gave me this book. I read it all the way through in one weekend! He told me that he read it only because it had his name on it, but he soon realized that it was an excellent book, and he wanted me to enjoy it as well. When I was 22 years old, I gave it to my boyfriend, (who is now my husband, and my best friend) to read, and he loved it also! Maybe that is how I knew we were meant to be, just like Kathy and Sargeant Mike. I will be giving it to my sons to read when they are about 11 or 12. They may be against it, (to 'mushy'), but I will keep trying. I know they will thank me someday, as will their wives! It is the most moving, uplifting book I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: Proof that books are not two-dimensional... Review: It must've been almost twenty years ago when my Mother suggested I read this book and I've never forgotten it. Even as a teenager I could tell that this was no ordinary book and I take great pleasure in reminding my Mom that I probably would not have known about it if not for her (thanks Mom, you're the best!). Don't think for a second that this is just a book for girls, it's for everyone. If I ever have kids of my own I hope I can encourage them to read it. Life is short, read this book.
Rating: Summary: A touching book that made me cry Review: I liked Mrs. Mike a lot. I liked that it was based on a true person and her life. It was quite sad, but Mrs. Mike handled everything pretty well. Each episode in the book kept me entertained. I'm glad I chose this for one of my summer reading books for my school.
Rating: Summary: Another older reader remembers Review: When I was in the 6th grade (41 years ago), I had nearly quit reading because I couldn't find books appropriate to my reading level and interests. My teacher took me to the library, and the first book she gave me was Mrs. Mike. Like other reviewers, I tell the story about that book and the great favor that teacher did to keep me reading. For years, I have wondered if it was still available. Thank goodness I have found it, as it was one of the most influential books in my life. It deals with real life and doesn't sidestep life's joys or sorrows.
Rating: Summary: A Spectacular Read! Review: When I was in the 7th grade, the 8th grade English teacher made Mrs. Mike a MUST for class reading. Everyone had to do a report on it. I asked my teacher if she would mind me doing the same for extra credit (English was my weakest subject). She agreed and so I acquired my first and only copy of this book.I was so enthralled by the story, swept away with the characters...I almost felt I was with them. Katherine Mary Flannigan experiences joy and pain as she goes through life in the wild of Canada about a hundred years ago. I am sure that each and every one of us has had our share of hard times, but I dont know how I would have stood up to the pressures and pains of the burndens she carried. Nor do I know anyone as caring, thoughtful and loving as Mike was...makes me laugh to think how I wished he were mine! I definite MUST for anyone and everyone who likes a wonderful love story, a good laugh and a good cry.
Rating: Summary: Newsom Literacy Association Review: Nancy and Benedict Freedman have put together a heart warming biography of a young, naive woman by the name Katherine Mary O'Fallon who falls in love with Sergeant Mike Flannigan, a Canadian Mounty. This story portrays the trials and tribulations a young wife may experience in the unconquered lands of Canada in the early 1900's. I recommend this book to anyone who comes across it and garauntee it will touch you in a way no other book can.
Rating: Summary: Mrs. Mike Review: Her name was Kathy and she had red hair. My name is Kathy and I have red hair. From the moment I began the journey with Katherine Flannigan, to the moment the book ended, I was Katherine Flannigan. I have always wanted to live somewhere like Alaska (I love the cold weather) and I think it had something to do with reading this book. I was only in 7th grade(1964)when I 1st read this story and, at that time, I wrote on the inside cover, "this book is cool and fine". It was then and it is now and I have reread this book many, many times. It is the perfect example of "true love" and I felt like I personnally went through every adventure with them. Not too many books make you "feel", but this is definitly one that does and I have gotten many people to read this book just by my enthusiasm when I tell them about it. I have now purchased a hardcover version of the book to replace my tattered and torn paperback but the story will always be intact. The story is timeless and it is something you can pass down to children and grandchildren or just reread yourself (again and again).......
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book for adolescence up to old age! Review: Like most other reviewers, I first read this book as a 13-year-old, 30 years ago. I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with Sgt. Mike Flannigan. Many years later, I was lucky enough to receive a first edition copy from my husband's family and it remains a treasure in my personal library. This book made a lifetime impression on me as a young girl to love and respect nature and native folklore, as well as to find a mate who is also my best friend! Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: Mrs. Mike Even Better Than I Had Remembered Review: I read this book close to thirty years ago. It has been haunting me ever since. I've been searching for it all these years to see if it could possibly be as good as I had remembered. It still is. I laughed and cried in the same chapters as I had done so many nights ago upstairs in my bedroom. I've read it to my son and my daughter who begged for more each night! It made us all long for a trip to the far-reaches of Canada. See if you and your children don't feel the same.
Rating: Summary: A real winner! Review: I recently had to complete this book for school. At first I thoght there she goes again, another boring book. Boy was I wrong! I loved this book! I was the first one in class to finish it.This is a great story. It is full of love and passion. When Katherine Mary cries, you cry with her. When sickness and tragedy strikes, you are all for Katherine Mary's family. I highly recommend this book for people of all ages!
