Rating: Summary: Not one of her best... Review: Okay. So I have to admit that I haven't been able to force myself to read this book all the way through, despite trying several times. I found the heroine very selfish and manipulative, rather than innocent and cute, as I'm sure she's meant to be. She takes advantage of an injured man, telling lie after lie, binding him to her and trying to shape his personality to her own desires, not once thinking of him as an individual with his own life or loved ones to return to. And then when things go awry and he demands that she become either his mistress or his wife, she has the gall to say that HE tricked HER and that he is not giving her a choice. Ironic, hmm? Definitely not a story line that sits well with me.
Rating: Summary: She does it again! Review: Once again, this author made me laugh and cry. I finished the book with tears streaming down my cheeks, but they were truly tears of joy and delight. Laura was a hoot and Sterling was definitely a hero in need of some chaos in his life. I was touched by the depth of emotion. And I wish I had a crazy little sister like Lottie (I think!)
Rating: Summary: An excellent storyteller pens a fine omance Review: Sterling Harlow is excited to see the splendid coach pull up by his house. He is even more ecstatic over meeting a duke for the first time as his Uncle Granville Harlow of Devonbrooke has come to visit. However, Sterling's elation turns to anguish when he learns that his father has sold him to his uncle, who names the lad his heir. Years later, Sterling is now the duke, but he cares little about anything more than being a rake. When he learns that his mother died leaving a will that contains a stipulation for three orphaned children, Sterling travels home for the first time since he was sold. He plans to kick Lady Laura Fairleigh and her two younger siblings out of his home. However, on the way he suffers a horse spill and is knocked out cold. Laura finds him and cannot resist kissing the sleeping beauty. When he awakens, Sterling has no memories so Laura feeds him one that will keep the three Fairleighs under a roof. After Laura and Sterling marry, he regains his memory only to find he loves the woman who sold her soul like his parents once did him. A KISS TO REMEMBER is a delightful historical romance that uses two common devices (amnesia and a will) to forward the bender gender Sleeping Beauty plot. Under a lesser talent than Teresa Medeiros (see THE BRIDE AND THE BEAST), this story line would have been trite. However, the wonderful writer makes the tale seem fresh and humorous with intriguing characters that turn this novel into a Fairleigh fine time for sub-genre fans. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: Remember this book, it's a keeper! Review: Sterling Harlow left his home vowing never to forgive the mother who sold him to a man who made him his heir, but destroyed his life. But when she dies and he is confronted with an angry letter from his mother's caregiver, Laura Fairleigh, he finds himself going to the home he'd tried to forget. And when he hits his head on a tree during a riding accident, he truly does forget it, along with everything else. Laura Fairleigh needs to marry in order to keep the home her kind employer left to her and her brothers and sisters. She just knows that if the terrible Sterling Harlow comes, he'll snatch it away and separate her small family. So when she finds a handsome, unconscious man in the woods, she wonders if her problems are solved. When he can't remember who he is, she names him Nicolas and sets out to make him hers. They fall in love but it all comes crashing down on their wedding day (literally) when Sterling remembers who he really is. This is a great romance from Teresa Medeiros. Though I found the subplot of the children's murderous impulses to be a little disturbing, Laura and Nicolas/Sterling far make up for it. And when they are married and Sterling knows who he is, the book really takes to life.
Rating: Summary: She finds him and decides he's hers! Review: Sterling Harlow, Duke of Devonbrooke is a cold man, he has no time or needs for emotions. He enjoys women and his lifestyle just fine and has little time to even think of happiness. Returning to his home his cousin Diana reads him a letter from a Laura Fairleigh one of his mothers wards. His mother is dead and Sterling decides to go see the property and rid himself of Laura and her brother and sister. Sterling has no fond memories of his parents or Arden Manor. They sold him to the former Duke (his uncle) and he's led a life that lost all happiness and had only a uncle who cared little for who he was but beat in him who he wanted him to be. Bitter he writes back that he will arrive in a month to take it back but something draws him there much sooner than expected. As he approaches he takes a fall and loses consciousness. When Laura receives a letter from Sterling she panics as she reads that he wants Arden Manor. Where will they go? She knows of only one way to save herself and her siblings she has to marry than the house will belong to her. But not one of the men who have proposed to her will make a suitable husband. So she does what any rectors daughter would do she prays for a husband who will treat her well and bathe regularly. When she stumbles upon an unconscious stranger in the woods she can't resist him. He's beautiful and for a second she lets herself imagine he's hers she puts her lips upon his and as he awakens he asks her who he is and faints. Laura thinks that Sterling is the answer to his prayers. She tells him his name is Nicholas and her fiancee. Nicholas knows that Laura is lying to him but he also feels as though she belongs to him. He falls in love with her and decides that he needs no memory with Laura at his side. When Sterling finally regains his memory he realizes that he doesn't know who he is anymore or who he wants to be but he wants Laura. A story that is a charming play on Sleeping Beauty(Sterlings emotions were sleeping until he got to live the life of someone else) and makes you realize that love is magical enough the evoke emotions in us that we long thought dead. Worth reading and rereading!
Rating: Summary: Ms. Medeiros always delivers wonderful romance! Review: Sterling Harlow, the seventh Duke of Devonbrooke, has never gotten over the resentment he has towards life in general. Sold to his great Uncle, the sixth Duke of Devonbrooke, to be raised as his heir, Sterling has never gotten over the harsh treatment and exacting demands he was forced to grow up with. Returning to London to begin his search for a bride, he's greeted with the news of his estranged mother's death. Incensed by censure he reads in the letter, he determines to confront this Miss Fairleigh. He finds himself heading for Arden Manor, and this Miss Fairleigh. He's shocked when he finds himself and his horse nervous in the dark forest approaching Arden Manor-and stunned when his horse sends him flying through the air... Laura Fairleigh and her two younger siblings had been living with Lady Eleanor for seven years, ever since the death of their parents. Laura had become extremely attached to the woman who longed only for the love of her estranged son, Sterling. She hated the odious toad for not returning his mother's letters, and for letting her live in the decline that had become the norm. But when Lady Eleanor passed away, Laura found herself beholden to the Duke of Devonbrooke, at least until she finds someone to marry, for that's the provision that Eleanor had left in her will-that Laura marry before her twenty first birthday in order to inherit Arden Manor. Unfortunately, she hasn't found any men that appeal to her in the local village, and doesn't know if she can settle for less than what she's dreaming of. So, when Laura is walking through the woods, communing with God and nature, and asking God to send her "A gentle man, a decent man, a man who will cherish me..." she thinks God has answered her prayers when she finds a man unconscious on the ground, with the face of an angel. When her gorgeous stranger is awakened by an impulsive kiss, she can't resist telling him 'you're mine'. Laura convinces Sterling that he's Nicholas Radcliffe, and that they're engaged to be married. Not remembering a thing, Sterling slowly comes to believe her, and finds himself charmed by her and her sister and brother, and even her nutty servants, Cookie and Dower. And it's not long before a on the spot plan goes terribly awry...and they find themselves crazy about one another. But how is Laura to tell him about her lie? And who, exactly, is Nicholas? What a beautiful, poignant story Ms. Medeiros has penned! This story is like a charming fairy tale, filled with wonderful characters that surround the hero and heroine. With a beautiful secondary love story, this book delivers enchantment and wonder from the first page. She makes us laugh, she makes us cry-she tugs at every emotion, and still we can't resist turning to the next page. I, for one, find myself hanging on edge waiting for her next book!
Rating: Summary: Charming and sensual. Review: Sterling Harlow, the seventh duke of Devonbrooke, is a cold, heartless man. Torn from his mother's arms and raised by a cruel uncle stripped him of kinder emotions. Upon discovering his mother passed away, he ventures to his childhood home. Laura Fairleigh and her younger siblings live in that home and fear eviction by the Devil of Devonbrooke. Laura prays for a suitable man to marry before her twenty-first birthday so that she may remain at Arden Manor. Her dreams are answered in the form of a compellingly handsome man with no memory beyond waking up in Laura's home.
Rating: Summary: The healing power of love Review: Teresa Medeiros has become one of my favorite romance authors in part because of the vision she repeatedly presents of the transforming power of love. In this tale, a young woman's desire to provide a home for her siblings leads her to concoct a story that will secure their future. Her manipulation of the amnesia-ridden Lord Devonbrooke is a wrong action based on good motives. Bad idea, yeah. But the heroine does mean well and the couple does fall in love. So he acts differently while his memory is impaired; the story evolves to show that under the hurts and abuse of his early life, his character is truly that which the heroine fell in love with, indeed the man he probably would have been if his childhood had been different. Moreover, the truths lie in the heart in this story, not in the external details. There is emotional depth here, a smattering of well-placed humor, and plenty of romance and passion. Plus Medeiros always-engaging style. Neither the hero nor the heroine is perfect, but the reader comes to believe that they are perfect for each other. And Laura's love for Sterling and his love for her heal the wounds of his past. Read the chapter headings back to back; they form a whole as well as intros to each chapter. Recognize the cat motif for what it is. Don't let the naysayers keep you from reading this book. Sometimes we all need to believe in fairy tales.
Rating: Summary: what a wonderful twist! Review: Teresa Medeiros is a big fan of Anne Stuart, and since I adore Stuart's writing it does not surprise me I love Medeiros, too. I picked up Whisper of Roses and have been a fan ever since. As of late, she has turned her attention to faerytale. Face it, the little girl in all of us weened on Prince Charming will enjoy these fresh look at old tales. She revisits Sleeping Beauty, but in this big girls tales, it's Prince Baby who is sleeping or more to the case Duke Baby. Laura Fairleigh an orphan, was raised by a kind benefactress (aka Faery Godmother) who leaves her Arden Manor when she dies. Only one problem, in order to hang on to the Manor she must marry before she hits that kiss of death the Big 21st Birthday. She only has three weeks, so she prays for a man to be sent to her to save her from losing the house - and her prayers are answered - sort of. The man who comes, is the one she fears most (though she does not know this). He is Sterling Harlow, a roguish estranged son of Laura's benefactress known as the Devil Duke of Devonbrooke. He has come to kick the gooddigger out of "his" home and reclaim it, but he suffers a fall from a horse and is knocked out. Laura is getting desperate at this point, so when her kiss awakens him, she convinces him they are betrothed, hoping she can get him to the alter before the three weeks are up. It's a sweet and sexy tale that is just the perfect bedtime story for all grown up lasses!!
