Summary: The same story is told better elsewhere
Review: Is it just me or is this premise getting old? This is yet another romance where the heroine retains the help of a notorious rake to teach her - platonically - about passion so that she can seduce another man. During the course of these "lessons", the chemistry between pupil and teacher takes over and eventually leads to romance. here, the book itself is OK, but the premise fares better in "Educating Caroline" by Patricia Cabot. "The Lady's Tutor" by Robin Schone offers a much steamier take on it. The hero in "The Seduction of Sara" is appealing and has some unique elements to his character. Sara, not so much. In the end this was merely a serviceable romance, not a really good one.

Summary: Let the Games Begin
Review: Karen Hawkins is an absolute master at writing stories that get your attention from the very beginning and hold it to the very end and the Seduction of Sara is a prime example. Sara is a widow who wants to get married and doesn't want the restrictions of a marriage, Nick is a rake who wants a place in society and a mistress but not the commitment of a marriage. When the these two get together the sparks fly. Nick tries to teach Sara the fine art of seduction in hopes of making her his mistress and Sara wants to learn the art of seduction in hopes of gaining her a pliable husband that will allow her to do as she wishes. Neither of them plans to fall in love with the other.
Ms. Hawkins hooks the reader from the very beginning and keeps the pages turning with humor, intrigue, passion, and unexpected suprises. I cannot wait until her next book comes out. Enjoy!!

Summary: Seductive characterization in this comedy of love and manner
Review: Lady Sara Carrington has since lost her exuberance and spirits when her infidel of a husband, Julius is thrown off the carriage with his pants down during a romp. She becomes fractious and rocks the paragon of the society with her scandalous costumes and untamed manners. That's when her brother Marcus and Lord Greyley, Anthony steps in by banishing her to Bath while hunting for her a suitable conjugal candidate. At the Jefferies' ball, she meets the Earl of Bridgeton, Nick Montrose and his reputation as a rake makes him a love match. Sara seeks a marriage with a handsome husband who is free of emotional attachment. However, the chemistry between them pulls them into a web of desire and an eventual marriage enforced by her brothers, but Nick is haunted by his illness and his sordid past - refusing to share his dark secrets with Sara. His reluctance gives way when Sara is pregnant with his child....

Regency romance writer Karen Hawkins saves the conventional plot of struggle between propriety and desire with luminous secondary characters and witty quips. Sara's aunt Delphi lacks the courage to declare her passion for Henri, a comte who lives under the roofs of Hibberton Hall owned by Nick. Sara is feisty and reckless but manages to tame the profligate Nick with her ways. The comedy of love and manners under Karen Hawkins shines with seductive characterization and grandiose passion. It is marred by the inconsistencies in the plot though where Nick desires a mistress yet he denies sex with Sara. It is only so much later in the book that the condom finally manifests. Shouldn't Nick be more familiar with contraceptive methods than Sara who initiated it? Dspite some minor flaws, THE SEDUCTION OF SARA still manages to captivate.

Sara, who is trying to keep her brothers from selecting a husband for her, is planning to have Nicholas teach her how to entice the man that she selects for her next husband. The situation becomes a problem when Sara falls for Nicholas and uses his own instructions to seduce him. The Book is very funny and very entertaining. I loved it.

Summary: A provocative love story
Review: Society is a world ruled by men and Saraphina Lawrence (nee St. John) is sick of it; of their posturing, their braggart ways, their insufferable high-handedness and their crushing infidelities. A lady should turn a blind eye to such outrageousness, of course, and cultivate a cool veneer. Sara tried that once, however, and was heartbroken by the results. Her husband, Lord Carrington, was a rake to his hardened core and died whilst pleasuring himself between the thighs of a doxy, one of but many. Thus, a marriage that began as a love match ended on a horribly sour -- and heartbreaking -- note. Her widowhood has been a reawakening for Sara, her wildness thusly given free rein with tearing trips through Hyde Park on horseback, a risqué sense of fashion and visits to a gaming hell. Unfortunately, her wildness is taken a step too far, alerting her hideously overbearing brothers. Five in all, they decide amongst themselves a change of scenery would be prudent -- and so too, a new husband for Sara (to be of their own choosing).

Banished to Bath with an ultimatum looming over her head, Sara has only her Aunt Delphi for company; a childhood friend, Anna Thraxton, to help plot new mischief; and an aching need to rebel against her brothers' dictates. She can bloody well find her own husband, thank you -- one of a malleable nature and not the inevitable stuffed-shirt her brothers are likely to choose for her. The pickings are slim in Bath, however, and her efforts are met with increasing frustration. That is, until the Earl of Bridgeton is pointed out to her as a possible prospect. Handsome as a blond God, Nicholas Montrose is a man who needs no introduction, really. Recently returned to England, the whiff of scandal still sticks to his skin like a potent cologne. The details of said scandal are sketchy at best -- and fortunately, Sara couldn't care less. Here at last is a pleasing prospect: a husband who will surely keep a healthy distance from his wife's affairs.

Marriage is the farthest thing from Nicholas Montrose's mind, though, when he first sets eyes on the delectable Lady Carrington. Half innocent, half wanton, Sara is a compelling enigma to man of such jadedness. Nick is determined to lure Sara to his bed and keep her as his mistress -- until those demons inside of him, so carefully concealed, slip their leashes and steal what's left of his soul. A dalliance is all Nick wants; indeed, it's the only thing he can have as time is short. He needs to convince the voluptuous Sara, however, that an affaire de coeur is all he can offer. Will a practiced seducer become the seduced? Nick is determined to avoid that trap at all cost; a man with no future has no heart to give, after all. It doesn't take Nick long to realize, however, that the road to hell is paved with more than good intentions: it's paved with a man's doomed and shredded soul.

Could Sara possibly be Nick's salvation?

For those of you who have read Ms. Hawkins' debut novel, THE ABDUCTION OF JULIA, I must confess I bucked a reader's trend by thoroughly and completing disliking the character of Nicholas Montrose, a morally bankrupt man with no redeemable qualities whatsoever, I thought. Hence, I bought THE SEDUCTION OF SARA with a certain degree of hesitancy; a fear, even, of inevitable disappointment. Having confessed my lamentable lack of faith, I must now commend Ms. Hawkins for writing such an exquisitely moving piece of romantic fiction. It was less intense than I expected; and the character development wasn't as deep, shall I say, than a reader is want to expect, nay, desire, especially for such a complex character as Nick. Although his transformation from "villain" to hero is a believable one, I found it difficult to equate the Nick from Ms. Hawkins' debut novel (as I remember him) with the admittedly dark, but nonetheless sensitive -- even vulnerable -- version of Nick in THE SEDUCTION OF SARA.

It's quite the dramatic change in priorities if nothing else. Nick is now searching for respectability, for acceptance from the society that once shunned him. Sara's penchant for scandalous behavior is therefore a worry. If Sara is to become Nick's mistress, her reputation must remain spotless -- I puzzled over why it should matter one way or the other for a time. If society were to discover such an assignation, Sara's reputation would be sullied anyway. That being said, THE SEDUCTION OF SARA is a romance novel filled with genuine emotion, a sultry sensuality and a cast of thoroughly likeable characters (with their own quirks and faults). The writing is smooth and makes a reader positively fly through the pages.

Ms. Hawkins, you have converted me! I now have a tendré for Nick. Readers: THE SEDUCTION OF SARA will seduce and beguile you; I can only plead for Sara's brothers' stories and hope they'll be told with the same grace and sensitivity -- and yes, wit -- evinced by Nick and Sara's provocative love story. Brava!
