Rating: Summary: Who's the hero? The dashing Raider or the steadfast friend? Review: Alex Montgomery is called back to his family's home town in colonial New England to somehow right the wrongs perpetrated by the British and his scheming customs officer brother-in-law. Thru a series of mishaps he finally arrives home disguised as an overweight fop, injured from an encounter with British soldiers, and hiding his one experience as the black-garbed Raider--supporter of the Americans and enemy of the British. Alex is disgusted that no one--the townspeople, his own family, and lovely Jessica Taggert--seems to see thru his padding and peacock clothes to the "real" man. And so his double life begins--sometimes as the dramatic Raider affecting rescues with a Zorro-like flair--sometimes as the plodding but compassionate Alex quietly working to help an angry and courageous Jessica. Both "heros" vie for Jessica's heart. Both "heros" criticise the other to Jessica. One eventually wins her heart and mind--and her angry but hysterical-to-read revenge when she discovers that both "heros" are the same man. It is frustrating to watch Alex and Jessica take so long to figure things out (especially as most people around them have already discovered the Raider's identity!) Still, this is a quick-moving and rewarding story.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding and extremely fun Review: As with all of Jude Deveraux's book you can expect an excellent historical reference as the background. In the foreground, you will find strong characters. The men are well fleshed out whether they are the hero or the wimp. However, I am truly impressed with her strong characterization of women which even women in this century can understand and appreciate. Jessica Taggert represents the Taggert clan quite well as a dynamic woman who like the women of the nineties tries to balance taking care of her family and learning to be a woman of her century. Alexander Montgomery like all of the Montgomery men is not afraid to be sensitive as well as intelligent. Also like the Montgomery men, he stands up for what he believes in and does it with a wonderful "Batman" like flair.
For a new reader, you will find yourself engrossed in the storyline and will not want to put the book down. For the experience Jude Deveraux reader, you will once again enjoy the characters and the places of the American Revolution period.
Rating: Summary: FUN READ -- CLASSIC ESCAPIST ENTERTAINMENT! Review: I always appreciate a Jude D. book -- especially her well-written and well-researched historicals. "The Raider" shows Jude at the top of her game, with a story that offers the most unresistable of unresistable heroes, and a heroine who is smart and strong. (It was fun watching her learn to swallow some of her self-righteousness!) This is the kind of book you take to a beach and finish in one sitting. You won't be disappointed!

Rating: Summary: Stick with it - You'll be glad you finished it Review: I did enjoy this book even though I was ready to through it in at times. Deveraux kept me curious - I had to find out when and how Alex's secret would be discovered. I must say that at times I was annoyed like "enough already, tell Jess the truth." As well as could she be that dense to not figure it out on her own? Even though I felt it dragged the anticipation a bit thin, I am glad I finished it - I did enjoy it. Give it a chance and I hope you will too!

Rating: Summary: It's Hard to Enjoy Reading When You Keep Rolling Your Eyes! Review: I don't know if I have ever hated a book so much. Where do I begin? The anachronistic language? The heroine sounds like she was born in 1983. The completely presposterous story? The distinctly unlikeable personality of the heroine who, I guess, was supposed to be bright and "sassy" but came off as merely thick-headed and shrill? The lack of charm between the main characters was only made worse by their lack of "chemistry". I've always thought of Deveraux as a hit or miss author but she really seems to have phoned this one in, and it's so incredibly awful that I doubt very much I'll ever take the chance on another of her books, as I do hate wasting money. If I could give this book NO stars, I would.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Fabulous Review: I loved this book. This was the first Jude Deveraux book I bought and I am a fan for life. This book has become one of my favorites. Eventhough the one sex scene in it is written poorly it is still a triumph of a book. Within the first few pages I was hooked to the characters. When I opened the book I was immediately transported to 1766. It was nice to read a well written romance. The book was romantic as well as hilarious. I found myself laghing outloud one minute and the next minute saying "awww". I finished this book in half a day because I couldn't put it down. Right now my book is with my friends because they wanted to read it and trust me they all love it as well. I totally recommend this book to anyone!
