Rating: Summary: ADDICTED TO HISTORICAL ROMANCE NOVELS Review: THIS IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE ROMANCE NOVELS. HASTING'S, I FELT HER PAIN. BUT AT TIMES HER HAUGHTINESS BROUGHT HER MORE TROUBLE THAN SHE COULD HANDLE. AS WAS THE CUSTOM IN THIS IN THE TIME PERIOD, SEVERN FELT HASTING SHOULD SUBMITT TO HIM, NO QUESTIONS ASKED. HER NOT HAVING A MOTHER AROUND REALLY MESSED HER UP WHEN IT CAME TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE MALE SPEICES THINKS. BUT NEVERTHELESS, HER HUSBAND DIDN'T MAKE IT ANY EASIER ON HER. HE TREATED HER LIKE ONE OF HIS SOLIDERS. THEN COME MARJORIE, SEVERN'S OLD GIRLFRIEND, WITH WHOM HE THOUGHT WAS THE MOST PRETTIEST THING IN THE WORLD. MARJORIE WAS A GRADE A B-T-H. I HATED (LITERALLY HATED) THIS PERSON. SEVERN ACT A TOTAL JERK WHEN SHE SHOULD UP. MARJORIE TOOK GREAT PLEASURE IN TELLING HASTING THE SHE GAVE SEVERN HER VIRGINITY WHEN THEY WERE YOUNGER. IF YOU LIKE TEAR-JERKERS THIS IS A GOOD ONE. ANY WOMEN CAN UNDERSTAND HASTING PAIN AND THE FEELING OF HELPLESSNESS.
Rating: Summary: reader in CA Review: It's hard to believe the characters. The man she falls in love with treats her so badly, I don't know how anyone could even like him, much less love him. He treats her cruelly at times. Hastings, the women, acts like a door mat much of the time. At the end, some of the characters undergo personality transformations after they realize they all have been mean to the poor Hastings. I wanted to puke. People do not change that much.
Rating: Summary: Reality Check! Review: I rarely read reviews and it is even rarer for me to submit a review of my own, however I am making an exception for this novel. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course however I find some of the reviews to be priggish and narrow minded. Lets have a reality check here people. Rape among other issues addressed in this novel still occur today. In fact, it could be happening to you, a neighbor, friend, or family member. If you have trouble reading Rosehaven which is FICTION, then you must not watch the news or read the newspaper. Everyone seems very eager to condemn not only this book but the author as well. Lets not be modern day zealots please! Coulter has simply brought to light a very controversial topic and the fact that this book has created such strong opinions means that you as readers are more aware of issues that have plagued women-kind for centuries! Instead on condemning Coulter and her publisher, we should be thanking them for giving us a glimpse of what life was like in the 13th century and we should thank our lucky stars that we live in the 21st century! Women today are a great deal better off than they were over 700 years ago. In modern times at least women have some recourse if we are mistreated. We have social programs designed to help women trying to get out of abusive relationships like Crisis Centres/Womens Shelters. In the 13th century a woman was chattel plain and simple. When she was born she belonged to her father and once she married she became the property of her husband. That was the accepted belief and noone would interfere even though they may not have agreed. Thank heaven that these antiquated beliefs are no longer widely accepted. Thank the lucky stars! Some have said that the title Rosehaven doesn't make sense. Personally I think the title is ingenious. Lets break the title down. Rose implies something sweet smelling, soft and delicate. Haven implies a place of safety or rest. The title therefore is in direct contradiction with the overall tone of the novel, which is very dark and filled with menace. It is an oxymoron like bitter sweet. Admittedly this book is not my favorite of Coulter's novels, however it is not as bad as many reviews make it out to be. It is a good read and if you like Coulter buy it. I do caution you however that if you are faint of heart the issues addressed may make the book unpalatable for you.

Rating: Summary: Best romantic author today! Review: Rosehaven was the first book I read of Catherine Coulter's. I was so engrossed from the first chapter on. Ms. Coulter's books seem to take a person back in time. Her explicit detail to the homes and surroundings are amazing. I feel as if I'm standing in the castle or in the bailey's. Romance is a thing today that seems very hard to find. Ms. Coulter brings forth romance in such granduer that even the most pessimist person would not be able to put down her books. Since reading Rosehaven I've read quite a number of her other books. I recently purchased 10 of her books online as well as several from our local bookstore. Not only do her books hold the greatest of romance but they are also very lively. The mystery in each one holds a person in suspense until the very last chapter. I love medevial times. If time travel were possible this is the time I would return to. A knight in shining armor is most every girl's dream. I love the way the women in Ms. Coulter's books have a mind of their own (as I do). No woman, no matter the place in time, should give up her identity just because she marries. I truly love each book I've read thus far. I do have my favorites. I adore the characters in the Song Trilogy and the Magic Trilogy. I haven't read any of the current setting books, but I'm sure they're wonderful even in this day in time. Ms. Coulter's book are an inspiration to me and let me lose myself, for just awhile, in a different century of time.
Rating: Summary: Oh for all the gods a "critic" Review: I've read Coulter for years...and I must say the books that I appreciate...are the one's that have me crying. It may sound strange but I love the emotion Coulter has drawn from me. I passed by this book and wondered why it didn't fair so well. I must say that "critics" never surprise me. I'm buying it because if so many "public" critics have givin it such rebuke...then i'm sure to enjoy every minute. However, to give all sides their due....opinions are free.
Rating: Summary: A Great Historical Novel Review: Rosehaven was an interesting and thought provoking book. It had great character detail and put the reader on the edge of her seat. I would suggest to others that have reviewed this book to first READ the book and then learn how to write properly. I enjoyed all of the sub plots and the romance. It was the truth about life in 1277 and if you don't want to read about things like that then I suggest that you not read anymore books by Ms. Coulter because all that she writes is HISTORICAL fiction....ie, the truth about what really happened in the past mixed with interesting storylines.
Rating: Summary: Hastings Review: I DIDN'T WANT TO PUT THE BOOK DOWN, WANTING TO KNOW WHAT OR WHO ROSEHAVEN WAS. I LOVED HASTINGS, HOW SHE DIDN'T GIVE IN TOO EASILY TO THIS NEW HUSBAND. SHE HAD GUTS AND WAS NOT A WIMPY GIRL. I DON'T AGREE WITH RAPE, BUT BACK THEN MEN TOOK THEIR WOMEN READY OR NOT. WOMEN WERE NOT KNOWLEDGEABLE OF SEX, THE ONES WHO WERE LADIES. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT 1200 AND THINGS WERE NOT ALL HUGS & KISSES AND APPLEPIE. WOMEN DIDN'T HAVE A PLACE OTHER THAN TO PRODUCE AND HEIR FOR THE LORDS'S OF THE MANOR. THEY WANTED SON'S. I HATED MARJORIE, I NEW SHE WAS UPTO NO GOOD, SLY WITCH, KILLING WAS A WAY OF LIFE, LIKE BEATING THE WIFE TO DEATH FOR BEING WITH ANOTHER MAN. TRIST MADE SEVERIN KIND AND SWEET, BUT HE HAD AN IMAGE TO WITHHOLD TO RULE ALL THOSE MEN AND THAT MUCH LAND HE COULDN'T LOOK LIKE A MEAR WOMEN COULD RUN HIM BY HIS NOSE. IT SHOWED HOW PRIM-EVIL THE TIMES WERE. I ENJOYED THE LUSTY PARTS AND LAUGHTED WHEN THE WOMEN SKEEMED TOGETHER. REALLY ENJOYED WHEN HASTINGS HAD HER FIGHT WITH MARJORIE. THE HEALER WAS SO INTERESTING AND THAT SHE WAS SO IMPORTANT IN EVERYONE'S LIFE. I'M ENJOYING HER BOOKS VERY MUCH. CAN'T WAIT TO START THE NEXT ONE.
Rating: Summary: The Worst Romance Novel I ever read Review: I would give this book no stars if I could. This had to be the worst piece of trash I have ever read. I have never been a great fan of historical romance, but this is by far the worst book I have ever read. I do not care if the story takes place in the 12th century, rape is wrong no matter what date in time or if the rapist is your husband. I counted three times when the "hero" Severin raped his wife, Hastings. It disgusted me. On top of the rapes, Severin treated Hastings like she was nothing better than a brood mare and a possession. Forget that if it wasn't for her, he would have no money or land of his own. The message behind the story bothered me to. It was a message of male dominance and control. I find it unbelievable that a twentieth century woman would write such shit. It is very hard to like a story when you hate the hero. For anyone who is considering buying this book, my honest advice to you is do not waste your money on this book.
Rating: Summary: DIFFERENT PEOPLE LIKE DIFFERENT THINGS Review: i first bought this book because i was curious when i read the reviews here at amazon. i was just beginning to discover catherine coulter's work but i have already read a good amount of her books. i found this book to be somewhat offensive. the only features that i found fascinating were the animals. the sex scenes were somewhat a consolation to me for wasting my time on reading it. TO SENSITIVE WOMEN: DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!! if you're going to buy this book let me give a piece of advice: IF YOURE A FIRST TIME READER OF COULTER'S BOOKS THEN U WONT LOOK INTO THIS BOOOK AS A DISAPPOINMENT. IF U'VE ALWAYS FOLLOWED COULTER'S WORKS I SUGGEST THAT U SKIP THIS PARTICULAR BOOK OF HERS COZ I'M PRETTY SURE U'LL CONSIDER THIS A WASTE OF MONEY. IF U'RE NOT SURE IF U'LL LIKE THIS BOOK, GO TO THE LIBRARY AND BORROW IT !!!
