Rating: Summary: Maybe someone can help me figure this out... Review: 5 years ago, my ex-stepmom named our cat Moose. I asked her where she came upon the idea of naming the cat Moose, and she said from a LaVyrle Spencer book. I can't remember the title, but I know it includes a feline character named Moose. If you know what book this is, please e-mail me and tell me, it's bugging me to death! Thanks!
Rating: Summary: GUNSMOKE ANYONE???????? Review: A must read book for love story readers. In this book I hateda character and felt sorry for another character - not usually how alove story goes. This book brought to life TRUE GRIT out of two characters. One tough, the other you wouldn't think tough - but surprise!!!! What you get out of this book is more than a love story. The Gamble struck emotions of laughter, tears, anger and a smile when I read the last page. A true romance novel with quite a variance of emotions. Way to go again LaVyrle.
Rating: Summary: Simply wonderful Review: Agatha and Scott find themselves on opposite ends of a bitter fight over prohibition. As each does their best to outwit the other they find themselves growing closer. When an orphaned child turns to both of them for comfort, they realize what has been brewing. Unfortunately, what has brought Gussie and Scott together (prohibition) may force them apart. This is a fantastic book that I have read again and again. Both characters are really likeable and there are many funny scenes. This is a great book for new and old Spencer fans. If you read Hummingbird and liked it, you will enjoy The Gamble.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful characters and story Review: Hard to imagine the two characters that meet at the beginning of this story would ever end up together. As the story develops you are thrown from laughing out loud at their antics in trying to out do each other in the prohabition war until the realization that it could be the end of their time together. This brings the story to the gut renching separation of not only the man and women but the child as well. From there you want to do what you can to help bring the "family" back together. It is amazing how LaVyrle Spencer brings this unlikely family together and introduces a new member so different from the rest but yet so accepted and accepting that it seem natural. I can't wait to read it again. Thanks for the escape.

Rating: Summary: Knocked the Southern Breath Outta Me! Review: I have read four books of Lavyrle's and have to say this is the best by far although all of her books are a delight! Lavyrle writes so well that while reading you get this mental picture of everything that is happening, it is as if you were there yourself witnessing the whole thing and personally knew the characters yourself. I admire Agathas spunk and composure and Mr L. Scott Gandy is as southern a gent your gonna find. I found myself falling for him too! I think it was written very cleverly and I have to say the ending was perfect!
Rating: Summary: Beautiful characters and story Review: I have read many books by this author, and one problem that I have with them is that I usually don't like the female lead character. Quite often, they're too sharp-tongued and hard-edged for my tastes. And I have to admit after reading the first couple chapters of this book, I thought I was in for more of the same. But once I got to the scene where Agatha and Violet are sewing with the dancers, I knew this was going to be different. I absolutely loved the character of Agatha, along with all the other main characters. Agatha has a heart of gold, and yet she is able to stand up for what she believes in, even if it means risking her chance for love. You can really feel her pain, but yet you don't feel sorry for her either. A perfect lead character. As for Scott, I knew right away that he would keep me laughing through the whole book. I also like the way the author threw in Jesse and Abigail DuFrayne from her book "Hummingbird", even though I did not like that book very well. This was one of the best I've read from this author. It will be very difficult to find an author that can write romance as well as Lavyrle Spencer can.
Rating: Summary: Heartwarming Review: I have read this book many many times as well as all of her other books. I knew that Lavyrle has always had a way with words, a way to put the scenery and setting into our mind with the way she writes, but I didn't realize how much until recently. I was watching a television program the other night on ghosts and hauntings when a story came on about the Waverly Mansion/Plantation. I had recognized the name from the book so I really paid attention. Across the screen came a picture of the house exactly as I had pictured it from Ms Spencers book. From the grand coplula to the winding double staircases, it was just as she had described in her book. Apparently the mansion is haunted by a small girl believed to have passed away in the house. She is believed to be a sickly neighbor child that was brought there to be taken care of. I find it amusing that Ms Spencer used a ghost of a young girl in her book as well. I love to read her books about long ago and then have her put her own twist on things to 'rewrite' history. Being from Minnesota myself (where Ms Spencer is from as well), I also find her books that take place in Minnesota so familiar. Having recently moved to another state I know that all I have to do to go back 'home' is to read one of her books.
Rating: Summary: Accepting your life, caring for others, learning to love. Review: I have read this book several times, and never cease to be moved by the story. It became bigger than life to discover that Waverly Plantation does in fact exist as is located in MS. Not in as grand a manner as portrayed in the book, but every bit as elegant, and filled with the "spirit" of the original builder and owner, Colonel Young who built it in the 1850's and was restored to it's magnificence by the Snow family in the 1960-70's. Read a very touching story based on respect, friendship and most of all a beautiful love that developes based on that respect and friendship. The Gamble reminds us of a time when honor existed and love was meant to last a lifetime.
Rating: Summary: the gamble Review: I loved this book. I have read it several times, and every time is just as good as the one before. I cry everytime I read this book. The Gamble is one of my favorite Lavryle Spencer books. She is one of my favorite authors.
