Rating: Summary: Interesting until the end... Review: "The Accidental Virgin" started out very amusing and had a great premise. Stacy, a successful businesswoman suddenly comes to the realization that she may have to join that unfamiliar territory - born again virgin - all thanks to an online article her best friend told her about. So starts her quest to relieve her tension with anyone - from one bad blind date and a former lover to an underage (and overly confident) suitor, her best (male) friend and then a female colleague. Perhaps it is a good thing she did not have a pet! This girl was busy!
I could relate to Stacy's drive to succeed on one point, but then the story just got ridiculous and no longer funny, particularly when she threw herself at a delivery man who barely spoke English. Heck is re-virginization really such a bad alternative to a communicable disease, or HIV? Quickly, you come to the realization that no matter how together someone appears, self esteem issues can attack even the most seemingly well-adjusted people.
The back story regarding the company and hostile takeovers was interesting, but I am pretty sure that I am not the only one that saw it coming a mile away.
Just when I was expecting her to come to the realization that all her efforts were ridiculous (and possibly settle down with the one person who appeared to actually understand her), the author chooses instead to make the ending completely unrealistic, and lets face it, really, really stupid. I felt cheated at the end of this book, particularly as I kept flipping back looking for the words "and then I woke up," only to find that unfortunately, that is how the book ended. I invested time and energy into something the author clearly could not be bothered to finish. It was like one of those Scooby Doo endings where those meddlesome kids got the last say. I got the feeling that the author said "oh, I have 300 pages now, better wrap things up..." This could have been so much more.
If you are looking for a good story on self discovery, check out "Good in Bed" by Jennifer Weiner. It has heart, soul and laughs. Unlike this unfinished manuscript which will make you want your time invested, as well as your $10.50 back.
Rating: Summary: Hillarious! Review: As a fan of Smart vs Pretty, I was excited to read The Accidental Virgin. Poor Stacy Temple is on the verge of her 1 year anniversary of becoming officially a "virgin" again. She has had no sexual contact which in today's society, should be commended. Anyway, she is driving herself crazy trying to hook up with a guy, any guy so that she doesn't hold this title. There's no mystery here what the book is about, but it's oh so funny to read about Stacy's little "sexcapades" with anyone (girl/guy) that will partake.
Rating: Summary: Quality Chick Lit Review: As a guy, I know I'm not supposed to like this kinda stuff but my girlfriend had it and I found that Valerie Frankel's prose and dialogue zips along so effortlessly and naturally, you don't just want to know her characters. You want to know her. She's one smart, funny chick. I'm going to read all her books now!
Rating: Summary: It's No Accident --- This Is a Winner!! Review: Can you become a virgin again, once you've well --- done it? According to Valerie Frankel's newest novel, "The Accidental Virgin", the answer is ... YES you can. Haven't had sex in a year or more? Boom, you're a virgin again. Frankel (of "Smart vs. Pretty" fame) produces a really funny and smart book with interesting characters, a great plot and wonderful charm. Without a doubt, this isn't your usual "chick-lit" endeavor. It's better than that. It's really well crafted and well thought out. I think Ms. Frankel is extremely talented and I continue to be charmed by her work. I loved main character Stacy, and found myself really relating to her and her struggles. She's an everyday gal and would certainly fit in with the ladies I call friends. A wonderful read --- loved every minute of it. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Yuck. Review: Having read both The Accidental Virgin and Douglas Adams' Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy, I have to say that I find Hitchhikers' more believable, with more realistic situations and true-to-life characters than this piecemeal work of . . . um . . . fiction.
Rating: Summary: This book is getting bum reviews Review: I absolutely loved this book! I don't know why many here are saying it was a waste of time. Obviously the title of the book says a lot. If you pick up a book called "Accidental Virgin" and think to yourself "hmmm this must be very thought provoking" obviously you are in for a downer. To me, the title gave away what a fun book this would be. I personally would give it 10 stars, but they only let you give five...I think Ms. Frankel had a goal of making this a fun read, and I think she did more then she set out to achieve. My favorite date, by the way, has got to be Stanley Bombicci...
Rating: Summary: Not the most likeable heroine... Review: I am the first to admit to being a chick-lit fan, of the American and British variety, but I didn't like this heroine at all. Maybe I'm too used to the standard formula as in a recent read "Jemima J" by Jane Green which I loved, but there was nothing "vulnerable" about this heroine and instead of trying to find love AND lose her "accidental" virginity simultaneously, she seemed willing to sleep with anyone and damn the consequences. Not too too sympathetic a character to me...the "hero" in this story didn't grab me and the ending seemed way too contrived to be funny. This is not one of my must-reads, I'm sorry to say.
Rating: Summary: Simple, Fun Read Review: I bought this book on a whim in a bookstore, and finished it within a day. It's the story of Stacey Temple, a 32 year old woman on the verge of becoming a virgin again. After reading an article on the internet describing how women can be "revirginized" after a year without sexual contact, Stacey goes on a mission to keep herself from being stigmatized with this title. She will stop at nothing, humiliation included, to be with SOME man before her year is up. I found the book to be pretty unrealistic, yet very light-hearted and humorous. It's a very fast, easy read that will keep you somewhat entertained from cover to cover. Frankel's witty sarcasm is excellent, and the storyline, though far-fetched, is sure to grasp anyones attention. Only worth the cover price if you don't expect it to be a "deep" and realistic piece of literature.
Rating: Summary: Do not buy this book Review: I bought this novel as a part of a "buy two, get one free" deal. It was the cheapest book so I didn't spend a dime on it. However, I do want my wasted time back. I'm not sure if the reviewers who have given such high ratings have read the same novel I have. This book is not funny. It's not witty. It's not amusing. It is monotonous, boring, and its attempts at humor are painful. Here are a few examples of the absolute junk this book is dishing out: - Stacy Temple ("redheaded and pink of cheek"): A reader should feel some affinity for the main character, feel some support for the character's desire to change her life. This character could have died, and I would not have given her a moment's thought. The story might have improved. - Macintosh computer: Dear Ms. Frankel, in the real business world, people don't use Macs. Graphic designers and visual artists use Macs. The other ninety percent of America uses PCs. I would expect a retail firm's VP of marketing and merchandising who works on revenue projections and business plans would know better. Live it, learn it, write about it in your next book. - Clothing references: Description of an outfit included a "bias cut leather skirt." Bias cuts come from woven fabrics, not animal skins. Someone so familiar with fashion name-dropping (the "red tote from Prada" and "complicated wrap shirt from Banana Republic") should understand very basic clothing terms. Once again, use it in your next novel. - A creepy vampire boy who hacks into adult sites "for practice" is scary. No woman in her right mind would find him attractive. Find a better character. It's called imagination. - For a woman who attempts to sleep with everything, I am amazed at her ability to be shocked, shocked! when other characters show deviant behavior. - The last chapter is horrible. I won't go into detail, just take my word for it: it's bad. After finishing the novel, I was amazed that such trash could get into print. The editor and publisher who approved the production of this book should feel ashamed. I mourn the poor trees who sacrificed their lives to bring this work into my life. The author has written five other fiction novels. Perhaps these other books are better, but I can guarantee I will not purchase a single one. Ms. Frankel, your readers are your customers. Entertain them. I enjoy a good chick-lit read, but I prefer them witty or amusing. This book is neither. If you are considering purchasing the "Accidental Virgin," don't.
Rating: Summary: Not as bad as everyone says Review: I couldn't put this book down. It was funny and well written. The ending was a little far-fetched, but otherwise it was just plain fun. And definetly sexy. If you're looking for deep, meaningful stuff this isn't the book for you. But if you just wanna spend a few hours shaking your head & smiling, check this book out.
