Summary: Best of the series.
Review: I liked the gothic nature of the story. And I liked Hannah best of all the governess of the "governess" series. I didn't find Dougald so terribly cruel. He certainly was softer than the Rosemary Rogers or Bertice Small heroes, for example. And the story should have worked for me. But it did seem to be missing something. The aunts and the tapestry story plot did get tiresome after a while.

Summary: Another great Christina Dodd book!!
Review: I picked it up and didn't put it down until I was finished! This was a great approach to the last of the Governess Series, not your usual storyline. I think everyone will enjoy this book and the various characters...who could not adore the aunts?

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Not my favorite...
Review: I thought that Hannah should have punched Dougald in the gut and promptly left him...on her way out, she should have punched the butler for good measure!

I got so frustrated with the way Dougald was behaving that I couldn't finish the book. I cursed him nine ways from Sunday, dog-eared the page and put it on a shelf.

DO NOT let this bad rating stand in your way of reading other Christina Dodd books. I have read every single one and enjoyed them immensely!

Summary: Disappointment!
Review: I usually love Christina Dodd novels......but not this one. Dougald was absolutely one of the WORST "heroes" I've ever read about. He has a mean streak a mile wide - there is no redemption for him. I had a really hard time finishing this novel. The first novel in this series is so much better than this one..........

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: An intense, funny, and satisfying read
Review: I'm surprised anyone could give this book less than 5 stars. For a change the main characters are actually more like real people than a hero and heroine. When they have tension between them there is a legitimite reason for it. When they are arguing, it's over real issues. And even though I had read the reviews and had an idea of the entire plot I was still surprised by it's twists and turns. I must also add that the 'aunts' have to be the most amusing secondary characters I have ever read in a romance novel. I started this book one Saturday morning and couldn't stop until I had read the entire thing - it was that good! I actually liked the entire Governess series, and pretty much anything else Dodd has written, but this is by far my favorite.

Summary: Fabulous storytelling
Review: In 1843 Hannah Setterington sells her very successful business, the Distinguished Academy of Governesses, to accept a job as a companion to an elderly person. Her real reason for going to the countryside is to obtain information about the identity of her father. Hannah hears rumors that the present master of Raeburn Castle murdered his wife, but she can prove otherwise because the new lord is her husband Dougald Peppard. He has searched for her since she ran away over eight years ago and only found her through the money she recently returned to him. He tells her he worried about whether she lived or died, and plans to enact vengeance for her desertion.

Hannah agrees to stay after meeting Aunt Spring and her three elderly buddies. An angry Dougald threatens her, but Hannah retaliates with a kiss that shakes up both of them. However, before they can explore their feelings, someone tries to kill the new lord, just as the previous four were murdered in the last few years.

Best-selling author Christina Dodd concludes her awesome governess trilogy with a powerful tale starring Hannah. The story line is fast-paced and filled with action while the loose ends from the two previous novels (see RULES OF ENGAGEMENT and RULES OF SURRENDER) are fully tied together in the subplots. The lead couple is a darling duo who hopefully live long enough to share the love that was placed on hold eight years ago. Fans of Victorian romances will relish this exciting tale and be enticed to obtain its predecessors.

Summary: I give up on C. Dodd
Review: It seems Dodd is a very popular writer, but after two misses, I can't read another of hers again. Undoubtably, many people will like her style. But I find it dull. I read historical romances because they offer something comtemporaries cannot--the glittering and complex world of the aristocracy. Therefore, I want historicals to feature lords and ladies and balls and intrigue. "Rules of Attraction" remains in the confines of Dougray's estate, which added to my boredom. Her heroines are usually governesses or something along those lines. While the heroine in this book is ok, I didn't really like her. Also, I hated the hero. From my experiences with Dodd (this is my second and last), it seems her heroes are first class jerks.

The high points of the book include the Aunts, who were cute and funny. The low point was the conclusion of the mystery. My reaction was, "Umm." It just seemed awkward and plain weird. Overall, I cannot recommend this book. It is too filled with angst, drags, the H/H are not likeable, and the suspense is unsatisfying. Dodd is a decent writer, but she needs (IMO) to write something worth reading.

Summary: Mixed Reaction
Review: It's 1843, you're an eighteen year old female born out of wedlock and sold, you flee your spouse and end up as a companion to a Lady. Seems rather impausible to me. Plus I don't understand all the hostile reaction to Dougald. He was highhanded but the reviewers are putting 21st century morays on him. I was more upset with Hannah, I mean the man did try to find her for 8 years and in the ninth year he didn't "out" her. He seemed to genuinely fear for her safety those first years. The reviewer who pointed out that both individuals had grown up over the intervening years helped give me a more favorable perspective to this book. However,Hannah's character was too selfish and immature for me to really enjoy. She didn't trust her friends and left her spouse to reap all the ill will with her disappearance not very admirable traits in a heroine.
