Rating: Summary: The first in the Velvet Series by Jude Deveraux! Review: "The Velvet Promise" is the first in the 'Velvet' series. Gavin Montgomery, the eldest of the Montgomery brothers, has been having an affair with Alice Valence. A woman that his brothers dislike. But when comes to an appointed tryst with Gavin to tell him that she is to be married to an old rich man, he informs her that he is to marry the heiress Judith Revedoune. They promise to only marry for money, and to love each other in secret.... once Gavin catches sight of the beautiful Judith, he loses his heart to her. In trying to not love Judith, he torments her from the beginning and she vows to hate him for taking her, but not receiving anything.Little by little they lose their hearts to each other, and Alice is left behind (who's still married for money). When Alice finds out Gavin fell in love with his wife, she goes to great lengths to get him back... even murder! Another WONDERFUL Deveraux book!
Rating: Summary: Agh! Review: I am really having mixed feelings for this book! The supporting characters were great! His brothers, adorable! I absolutley loved Judith: smart, clever, brave, diligent, loving. I really didn't care much for Gavin. Other than his great looks and abilities in bed, he was undeserving of a woman like Judith. I was actually hoping she would end up with one of the brothers, or really, a number of other people. Other men appreciated her more than her lovesick fool of a husband. He was too unpredictable, and he could be downright mean to Judith. Why would he hit her on her wedding day because she was mad that he KISSED and SWORE LOVE to another woman? What a jerk. And his stupidity? HELLO! She charmed a disgusting man to save your life and sneak you food so you don't starve, and then she killed him for you! Duh, WHY WOULD ALICE MAKE YOU SWEAR UNDYING LOVE AND THEN MARRY ANOTHER MAN! AND NOT GET MAD WHEN SHE KILLED YOUR UNBORN SON! (I know that I say "you" like he was really a person, I can't help it! I am that frustrated!) Man, I have never been so angry at a hero before! I have never disliked one before! I hate calling hime a hero, because I don't feel like he was one at all. He was totally undeserving the Judith's affection and talents. I am not saying they didn't have their moments, but they were few are far between. I would have preferred to read the romance between Judith's mother, Helen, and her John, or even Jocelin the lute player and his abused Constance. I really was dissapointed in this book. Very rare for Jude. Judith and the supporting characters are the only reason I give this 2 stars.
Rating: Summary: Only because its Jude Review: I have to admit this was the least favorite book of the series. Gavin was a real jerk to Judith, especially on their wedding night. He was totally selfish. His brothers where by far more caring than he. Judith was strong even though she was young. He was wild with grief, hatred, and revenge. It took away from the book for me. I wanted him to pay even at the end - well just a little because she tamed him. With all that said, this book was a good read because you got a glimpse of the next spectacular books of the series leading men. I recommend highly all the books of this series and even this one so that you know how it all started. Then I'd put this one on the shelf and re-read the others.
Rating: Summary: He doesn't deserve her Review: I had high hopes for this book, since it was listed on the reader's historical romance novel reading list. But Gavin Montgomery is a fool throughout the book, married to the strong, brave and beautiful Judith, while still pining away for mean, ugly (supposedly beautiful) Alice. It is overkill, and overshadows and ruins the romance. I ended up hoping she would hook up with another man! He doesn't deserve her!
Rating: Summary: The Best of the Best Review: Incredible!!! This book is the greatest book of Jude Deveraux I have read so far. I love the entire story very very much. Right from the very beginning, it captured my interest fully and not for even a moment I found it boring. The relationship of Gavin and Judith is so dramatic that it brings much joy to the reader at the end. I would recommend this book to everybody who loves romance and trust me, Jude Deveraux is the best romance writer!!! Thanks alot Jude :)
Rating: Summary: Velvet Promise Review: I really didn't like this book. I like more romance in my romance novels. I was shocked at the violence in it. ...suicide, abortion, the only thing missing was incest! Other people really liked it so maybe it's just me.
Rating: Summary: Best of the velvets Review: I've read all the books about the velvets and this one is the best!! I truely recommend it and it sure is a keeper too, I just love the Montgomery brothers and this one is just sooo good. You must read this one!
Rating: Summary: a tear-jerker story Review: I'm a ESL student.I enjoy reading book everyday. I had the luck to found this book. It really touched my heart. I read it three times, and evrytime it made me cry.I like Judith very much, she's the women I hope to be. This is the book you should have it and keep it. I also like the other book named "A knight in shining armor" by Jude Deveraux.
Rating: Summary: This is the first in the Velvet series and a 10 star read! Review: WOW WOW WOW!!! I was completely entralled with this love story of passion, greed, murder and true love... It all begins with a knight, Gavin Montgomery who has vast riches, but long ago a king disbanded much of the family's lands and money in jealousy. Not many noblewomen want to marry into this family because of this, but one man has pleaded with Gavin to marry his daughter, Judith Revedoune. Her father is an earl and his lands are coveted and much sought after. Joining the two would join the vast and rich lands he is dying for. Gavin agrees, seeing the prospect of the riches and the union at first seems a good one until Judith's temper and independant personality overcomes Gavin's domineering one. The battle of the wills begins and the two are forced to face their own demons. Soon Judith finds herself in love with the handsome knight, but someone in his past is trying to tear them apart and she refuses to admit her love; his heart had belonged to another for a long time. Can Judith's reknowned beauty and kindness capture Gavin's heart, or will he continue to be entanced by a beautiful witch bent on claiming him as her own? The action and intrique is amazing! I was completely in awe of this story and couldn't put it down! Another Amazon reviewer recommended it to me and I finally picked it up, Abbys, and I am so glad I did! To think I went all this time without reading this wonderful book and missed out on a great adventure! I am now excited to read the other 3 books in this series, HIGHLAND VELVET, VELVET SONG & VELVET ANGEL. These are the tales of Gavin's brothers. Judith is now one of my all-time favorite heronies! She is way ahead of her time and gives Gavin a run for his money!!! A sure keeper! This is my first book by Jude Deveraux and definately NOT my last!!! Thank-you again Abbys for recommending this series to me! Its a godsend!!! :-) Tracy Talley~@
Rating: Summary: A little disappointed... Review: I really believed that after all the wonderful reviews this book have gotten, I'd feel the same way, but I was a bit disappointed. I thought some scenes were useless like Jocelin's scene. I felt that his story didn't necessarily fit into the whole plot ..okay MAYBE a little but his story dragged on too long for me. And the love scene between Gavin and Judith wasn't passionate ..it was described rather quick and almost unbaringly the same throughout the book. And Helen and John, it was good that she finally found the happiness that she deserved but I found it rather odd reading through their intimate moments together ..it was almost like seeing my own parents ....never mind, but I HAD to skip a lot of that part. Gavin and Judith are a great lovematch, but damn ...Gavin was too blind. I wanted to see them with their baby too ...but ..oh well... The brothers were really great, they were amusing, I found myself laughing many times. I can't wait to read Stephen's disastruous marriage to her reluctant wife. Oh goodness!
