Rating: Summary: Revenge is a dish best served cold Review: Ooooohhhh!!!! This is a good one by Mary Jo Putney! Historical romance readers who love damaged heroes and angsty romance will adore "Silk and Shadows".
Mikahl Khanauri has been coldly plotting his revenge against Charles Weldon for 25 years and it is finally within his grasp. A wealthy, exotic and mysterious man who goes by the name of Prince Peregrine of Kafiristan, Mikahl arrives in Victorian England from Asia and sets in motion his plan to destroy his enemy--financially, socially and physically. Part of the plan involves separating Weldon from his wealthy, high-born fiancee, Lady Sara St. James. Peregrine sets out to charm and compromise the lovely Lady Sara, and finds himself unexpectedly drawn to her honesty and quiet strength. Sara is dangerously attracted to the exciting and mysterious Peregrine....but who is he really and why is he out for vengeance against Weldon???
The characters of the hero and heroine, Mikahl and Sara, are *very* well drawn and complement each other so very well. Mikahl is a complex, multi-layered and wonderfully *flawed* hero (my favorite type!) Sara is an excellent heroine--mature, intelligent, kind-hearted, passionate and true to her ideals. The villain of the piece, Weldon, is perhaps a bit too outrageously villainous (a seriously bad man and cold-hearted hypocrite with really *no* redeeming qualities except for his affection for his daughter.) There are a host of well-drawn secondary characters and even a touching secondary romance.
Typically for a Mary Jo Putney book, some of the issues dealt with in the story (child prostitution, slavery and rape--to name a few) are *very* serious stuff and will not please readers who are looking for a light, fluffy romance. But for those who like their heroes dark and damaged (and in need of redemption), this is an excellent read--well-written, well-plotted with memorable characters.
Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: Silk and Shadows Review: Silk and Shadow is one of the romantic book I ever read. The book made me realized that falling inlove was not just a fantasy, it was a reality. Sarah and Perigrine were meant to be together. Because of their love what was wrong was made right. Sarah brought Perigrine in the to thougt that vengeance against his enemy was not important. She believes that there was justice to everyone who seeks it. Because they were both deeply inlove nothing can stop their passion. Silk and Shadows was one of the greatest book I ever read. Try it and you'll know what love feels like!
Rating: Summary: A great book Review: Silk and Shadows is a fabulous book. Mary Jo Putney is a terrific writer, and this book is a fine example of her craft. The writing is fluent and graceful. The best thing about the writing is the characterization. Even minor characters are well-drawn and believable as people. The villian in this novel is extremely evil, but the author makes this completely believable by showing his thought processes. The plot is complex but very tightly drawn. All actions are motivated and most revelations are foreshadowed with a deft hand that does not draw attention to itself. The surface action provides a context for the more important evolution of the main characters over the course of the book. This book stands up to rereading, and I don't mean skipping around and reading the best parts kind of rereading. I was able to sit down and reread the book from start to finish, and I was just as absorbed in it the second time around.
Rating: Summary: It touches my heart!! Review: This book ,as usual, contains one elment that's always present in Putney's books. Wisdom. To me, this is why her books are so different from the other authors. I always love her characters. In this book, I love Peregrine, Sara and many others. No matter how many times I reread the book, the characters in it are still as refreshing and as intriguing to me as when I'd first read it. Anyone who loves action, excellent plot would love this book as well as her many others. The memorable events in this book has found its way into my heart!!
Rating: Summary: A Great Book ! Review: This book is about a mysterious man named Peregrine on a quest for revenge who instead finds romance. What's not to love about that? The characters are very well developed in this book (including the secondary characters). I liked many other aspects of this books including:
1. The heroine, while not old (27) is older than many historical romance heroines.
2. Prostitution is treated in a more serious light than many novels of this genre.
3. The hero actually had a good reason for acting the way he did
Rating: Summary: WOW........ Review: This book is unbelievably good..."Silk and Shadows" has so many layers...and the characters are wonderfully developed...this is not your basic "fluffy" romance!! Mikhal and Sara were perfect together..and the story!!! WOW!!! DEFINITELY a MUST read....dont pass this one up!!!!
Rating: Summary: Loved It!!!!! Review: This is the 4th book I have read by Ms.Putney, and as always, it was a great read. Though to be honest, I probley wouldn't have picked it up on it's own if I hadn't read Silk and Secrets first, and felt an instant bond with Juliet. I loved Peregrine, and felt his character had alot of depth and had to go through a considerable amount of change due to the plot. The reason he wanted revenge really shocked me, since it is the first I have ever encountered in any romance I have ever read. I had alittle trouble warming up to Sarah at first. She seemed a little flat for the first six or seven chapters, until her and Mikahl got to Sulgrave, then not only did things start to heat up, but I began to understand and warm to Sarah alittle bit more, though I really didn't thaw till the last half of the book. All and all she was a well written character, but like I said, I felt closer to Juliet in Silk and Secrets then to Sarah. I loved the second love story of Jenny and Ben, and wish that Ms. Putney had delved alittle deeper into what they shared. Still, the plot was well exicuted, and the hero and herione were both believable, and likeable. Charles was one of the best villian I have ever come across. And god was he a terrible hypocrite, who got his just rewards in the end. I would recommend this book to anyone that loves sensuality and happy endings in their stories. Another A+ for Ms. Putney.
Rating: Summary: Can't wait to finish the triology!!!!! Review: This was my first Mary Jo Putney boot and I finished it in a day. I can't wait to finish the triology. I love romance stories that have more to it than just lust and each other. I love it when the story has more at stake and more people involved and this is exactly what this stroy has. Once I started there was no stopping me. The love that Sara and Mikhal is something that we all hope to find. To truly love someone you must accept the good with the bad and in this story we see it all, this is why this story ws so special to me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: Smooth as Silk Review: This was the first book that I had read by Mary and I have to admit I was very impressed. The characters were very well written and the co-characters(so to speak) were just as great. I can't help but wonder about the main characters (Sarah) cousin and what had happened to him in his youth to make him be afraid to love. I certainly picked up on another possible story here. I hope that Mary plans a sequel. Prince Peregrin was a wonderful character, full of twists and turns and unexpected truths. The evil of the story was Sarah's ex-fiancee who couldnt be more evil. All though Mary almost has you feeling sorry for him, due to the love he has for his daughter, it's too bad the man is a lunatic! Anyway, this is a don't miss novel in my opionion and I look forward to reading more of her stories.
