Summary: If you can afford the time and money.
Review: I have recently bought a few hundreds of romance novels based on the lowest and hightest rating reviews I gathered from this website. It's very helpful indeed. I always read the lowest ratings first and see if I still want to get the book despite of that. The Dangerous Gentleman was my first book by Julia London. She is quite a new talent. There were moments in her book that made me laugh aloud. She certainly knows how to write but she can never equal Judith McNaught in style. If you have read Miss McNaught's books, you will surely find Miss London's lacking in many aspects--like those in the low ratings. I don't think that this book is deserved to be rated four or five stars unless you have not yet had the pleasure to read the same romance genre written by other truly talented authors, such as Judith McNaught, Amanda Quick, Andrea Kane, Julie Garwood, to name a few. I don't think that I will pick up more of Miss London's book now that I have satisfied my curiosity about her writing style. Don't read those talented authors I mentioned above first if you really want to give Miss London a try.

Summary: Better than Judith McNaught, YOU MUST BE JOKING
Review: I have to agree whole heartedly with mrsgiggles review of this book. Too bad I bought the book anyway. I made it to page 95 before I just couldn't stand it anymore. I almost put it down when on page 61 he called her a "bumpkin". The final straw was when he had almost forgotten his bride the morning after his wedding because hs was preoccupied with finding a packet he had misplaced after a night of "whor..." with his friends Julian and Phillip. Adrian is a complete jerk; too bad the outcome of the duel was not reversed - but I have a feeling it wouldn't have been much better of a story. Lilliana got on my nerves from the moment she met Adrian. As you can probably tell, I won't be picking up any more Julia London's books.

Summary: I now know what I want
Review: I suppose a thank you is inorder to Ms. London because this novel has made it clear what I like in the romance genre. And it is not this book. I should have placed higher value on mrsgiggles review. I, too, don't appreciate a juvenile, petty, abusive, self pitying hero. Unfortunately the heroine in this book didn't have much to choose from in the hero category. In most cases give me Amanda Quick aka Jayne Krentz, Julie Garwood, Catherine Coulter and Nora Roberts. Their heroes and heroines may have problems but they are also entertaining and not constantly sniveling about their lot in life. A man can be rough around the edges, that's character, but forever misunderstanding and wallowing in it and then taking it out on the woman who stands by him...well no thanks. Even when Adrian "acknowledges" his love his first thought is how Lillie can "save" him...so much for his love, it's still all about him not them.

Summary: Really beautiful !!
Review: I thought the plot was good, and the characters had plausible reactions. The history was one of the sweetest I have read and definitely I would re-read this book

Summary: The Dangerous Gentleman
Review: I thouroughly enjoyed this book! The hero was excellently crafted. I liked him even when he was being a shmuck. Most writers miss the mark when they present a hero who does unheroic things but Julia London walked the fine line perfectly. Her heroine was also real and likeable. Bravo!

Summary: Crummy Novel
Review: I tried I really tried to read this darn book. I spend so much money and time on romance novels that I want to make sure that I get as much as possible out of them. But life is too short to read crummy novels. This looked promising, I have read and enjoyed other novels by this author and the publisher usually publishes quality books especially when it is part of a series. Not this time though. The Hero and Heroine are just not likeable and the story line is crummy. Don't bother to pick up this book it is not worth the time it takes to read the back of the book. It is misleading because the back blurb makes it look like it may actually be worth buying when it is not.

Summary: An incredible blend of humor and emotion
Review: If you like lots of emotion, strong sexual tension, and dark heroes, this book is for you! Personally, I loved it! I realize Adrian will be a bit unsettling to some readers, because he isn't always "heroic" by romance novel standards. But I applaud Ms. London's honesty, and her ability to create characters who behave like real people. That she could balance Adrian's darkness with the heart warming, and frequently humorous Lilliana was the stroke of a true master. I found the theme of mercy and redemption powerful, and the honesty with which it was told refreshing. Brava, Ms. London! I can't wait for the next Rogue of Regent Street!

Summary: Another winner from Julia London
Review: It seems impossible, but Julia London just keeps getting better and better. This book enchanted me from the very first page. Adrian is a 'dark' hero to savor and yearn over. Lilliana is a delight and determined not to be ignored. Together they fight their way through to happiness and a most satisfying ending. This is one of those books you can't put down, then you are sorry it is over. I can't wait for the next book in this trilogy.

Summary: Pretty Good
Review: Julia London is generally a good storyteller, and there are parts of this book that are extremely well-written and humorous, especially those where the heroine attempts to shake the hero's disinterest; these are amusing enough in themselves to justify reading the book.

However, I do not consider this book on par with some of her other novels. I really didn't like the hero that much, nor did I find all of his psychological problems particularly interesting. I find it implausible when 18th century characters spout 20th century college psychology. And I find one of the basic premises, that he would kill his best friend, to lack credibility.

With that disclaimer, this isn't a bad read, just not as good as some of her other books.

Summary: A wonderful new trilogy begins from Julia London
Review: Julia London's newest release, her third regency era historical from Dell, is entitled The Dangerous Gentleman. It is the first in The Rogues of Regent Street trilogy, to be followed by The Ruthless Charmer in the Fall of 2000 and The Beautiful Stranger in 2001.

Adrian Spence is definitely a tortured hero; not only was he raised in an abusive home by a ruthless father that beat his mother to death and tormented Adrian, the heir, in favor of his younger brother, but the story begins with Adrian being forced to kill his cousin and one of his fellow Rogues of Regent Street in a duel gone wrong. When his father uses the duel as the excuse he's been looking for in order to disinherit Adrian in favor of his younger brother Benedict. Adrian, in his depression over the death of his cousin Phillip and his continuing rage at his father and brother, grabs the perfect opportunity to get revenge against Benedict, by marrying the woman Benedict intended to wed.

Lilliana Dashell is stunned when Adrian shows up at her home instead of Benedict, whom she has come to accept will be her future husband. Lilliana remembers Adrian favorably from when she was a young girl and visited Adrian's mother, when she first became enamored of the handsome Adrian. She is completely shocked when Adrian not only proposes marriage but makes short work of it, having already procured the special license. She agrees because he promises that they can be friends, companions, and she loves him enough to hope for more. What she gets is a lot less.

The chemistry between these two people is sizzling and the nights they spend in each other arms are irreconcilable with the distant and formal way in which Adrian treats Lilliana during the day. She is distraught that he is so unconcerned with and uninterested in her, except in her bed at night. She tries to determine what has caused Adrian to cut himself off from other people and in the process learns a lot, but also causes a number of other problems for them. When Adrian is injured in an accident, he becomes even more intolerable and her love is severely tested.

I found these characters to be completely engaging and fun, as well as sensual and exciting. The long and sometimes painful journey that Julia takes them on to reach their happily-ever-after is not only interesting and unpredictable, but also rewarding. The other two remaining Rogues of Regent Street, Adrian's friends Arthur and Julian, add an interesting element to the story and give us a glimpse of what we will find in the remaining two books in this trilogy. I thoroughly enjoyed The Dangerous Gentleman and anxiously await the next book. Great work, Julia! Barb Deane Copyrightc 1999, Barb's All Romance Book Store. All rights reserved
