Rating: Summary: I wish... I hadn't wasted my time Review: Berni A woman who thought only of herself during her life is sent to the 'Kitchen' a place where during your life you weren't bad enough for hell but not god enough for heaven. She is given an assignment...Nellie. Nellie an overweight young woman who loves her family to a fault, eats entire cakes, pies, cookies, etc when she is distressed, which is always. Terel, Nellie's sister is a witch at best. She lies, slanders, demeans and criticizes Nellie at every turn; their no better father is a penny pinching jerk. Nevertheless, Nellie loves them both and believes all of their lies without question. Nellie meets Jace a handsome guy who falls in love with her and not Terel, much to everyone's astonishment. While this guy loves her, Nellie rewards him by not believing and not trusting anything he does or says, even when the evidence is smacking her in the face. The author depicts Nellie as a woman overwieght by approximately 10-20 pounds. If I ate like her, I would be 100-200 pounds overweight. The thing is... this woman never stops or slows down in her eating. (If she loses weight it's not through work or willpower). I like to read stories where in the end the bad guys pay for or at least acknowledge they were bad and apologize. If this occurred, I must have missed that chapter. Lastly, had Berni, (the 'fairy godmother') not intervened, the end result would not have occurred. It had nothing to do with the characters 'finally opening their eyes to the truth' on their own. I was half expecting Nellie to be declared a saint in the end. I personally would have declared her something else. How her sister and father are 'rewarded' for their actions made me sick. I won't be popular with this review and I know it, but I refuse to rate it highly if I don't think it's deserved.
Rating: Summary: wishes Review: This is a truly wonder story that makes a person having some hope in life, some magical feeling of love, passion and not forgetting to pray for our life here on earth. Everyone need this kind of wishes to endures all the suffering that we feel in our hearts and what better way than to express is to let the person read this book.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful story! Review: 'Wishes' is the story that got me hooked onto Jude Deveraux's books. It wasn't the first I read of her's though. Suprisingly for the first time, I couldn't help but be drawn into the tale, and it was as if Ms. Deveraux had woven a web of enchantment that left the reader feeling absurdly happy for no reason at all. I kept jumping around the house for over an hour, not doing anything special, except smiling- a bit like a cheshire cat I think.Since so many people have already told you about the book by now, in the other reviews, all I can say is that the story has a magical cinderella touch to it. It will get you championing the hero and the heroine, causing you to feel a myriad of emotions that leave you breathless. Hoping I won you over, I say farewell:-D
Rating: Summary: This was the frist book I read by Mr. Deveraux Review: I'm I hooked. The stroy was the best. Having the underdog come out on top just made my day. I read this book three times. If you want to see a book were good overcome the evil sister. This is your book. Since I have read this book I have become a Jude Deveraux fan. I have read almost all her books and have I have not been disappointed yet...
Rating: Summary: The kitchen- between heaven and hell Review: I loved this book above all of Jude"s books because her wonderful sense of humor is most evident in these pages. I laughed out loud! It would seem that when a woman is neither very bad or very good she dies and goes to the kitchen, which all women know is between heaven and hell. Funny. The story itself is a Cinderella type theme, the "fairy god-mother" is a rather jaded, crafty, old society girl, which is a delightful twist and by trying to help truley good girl (the Cinderella), she learns alot herself. Read this, and then read Jude's other works, all but two of which, I adore! Hurry Jude! We need more like this!
Rating: Summary: This was one of her best Review: I loved this book for the sheer fact tat the heroine was not a tiny thing that turned heads whereever she went she turned hearts . Nelie was a wonderful character she was always thinking of other people. I liked the fact that Jace was not one of those men who think size six is size perfect he had something that all the other men I've read about didn't have he wasn't about looks. I liked his name a lot Jocelyn It is better than Jace.
Rating: Summary: A Fun Cinderella Story Review: This book does not compare to some of Jude Deveraux's other and better works. However, it is a sweet unique twist on an old classic. I enjoyed reading it, it only took me 2 hours! The story was very pleasant and I liked the addition of an ally (Berni) who helped get Nellie and Jace together. The villain in this story was great, one of the best parts of this book. Terel was bad, yet incredibly human as we see what her motives were for doing what she did to her sister Nellie. The general premise of this book, a twist of the Cinderella story, using a heroine who is not the typical size 6 was great. The secondary characters (Berni, Terel, Charles) and the addition of other characters from some of Jude Deveraux's most loved books (Houston and Kane Taggert, Maddie and Ring Montgomery) were the best aspects of this book I think. The part that was the most disappointing was fact that the two main characters weren't stronger or more passionate. I felt that Nellie was kind of dull, and Jace was kind of lacking in something. Nevertheless I enjoyed the book and will probably read it again some time.
Rating: Summary: ONE OF THE BEST Review: FIRST OF ALL THE SYNOPSIS WAS WRONG. JACE DIDN'T HAVE TO RESIST TEREL BECAUSE JACE DIDN'T EVEN LIKE TEREL. HE ONLY HAD HIS EYE ON NELLIE. AND BOY WAS TEREL A REAL PAIN IN THE ___ WHEN IT CAME TO HER SISTER HAPPINESS. TEREL DIDN'T WANT NELLIE TO BE HAPPY SO SHE SPEARD RUMORS OF ANY KIND TO KEEP NELLIE FROM LOVING JACE. BUT THE GOOD THING WAS THAT JACE DIDN'T GIVE UP ON NELLIE. NELLIE IS A CHARACTER WHO REALLY NEEDS LOVE BECAUSE HER SISTER AND HER FATHER NEVER SHOWED HER ANY LOVE.
Rating: Summary: beauty is in the eye of the beholder... Review: Apparently that sentiment carries over into my reading choices too--this is one beaut of a book! I know it is a Cinderella story but Cinderella had more spark than boring Nellie. What kind of name for a heroine is that? And Terel was a bit of a beautiful terror--must every beautiful non-heroine be so stupid? Tearing Terel's character down to bring Nellie's up was not the most original ploy the author could have chosen. Words like 'comely, fair, lovely, gorgeous, sexy, beautiful, stunning, svelte, amazing, breathtaking,' and even 'pretty' are never going to ring true for her. Which is probably why there is no glossy picture of her on the cover. I like the diversity of a less than beautiful heroine-- They may find romance love and acceptance with a very nice guy but chances are he will not be as perfect inside and out as Jace. (Even his name exudes hero sexiness) She is better off with a Sam, Norman, Phil or Martin. Someone more her speed. Someone more her style. Call me old fashioned but I like pretty heroines and heroes--I dislike plain heroines even more than plain heroes! Coupled with Jude's heavy handed style this book will not be appearing on my shelf any longer.
Rating: Summary: One book that will never leave my collection Review: The first romance that I ever read was Mountian Laurel by Jude and since then I have read almost all of her books. Wishes is a book that I have read at least a dozen times and I love it even more each time I read it. Jude ventures into uncharted waters with a heroine who is less that perfect(physicaly) and shows us that beauty is eye of the beholder.
