Summary: A VERY BIG FAVORITE
Review: Over the years I have read a lot of ROMANCE BOOKS, and have my favorite authors, etc. WISHES is one of my favorite Jude Deveraux books, next to MOUNTAIN LAUREL.

I like the fact that Nellie (Heroine)was the perfect heroine that is usually portrayed in ROMANCE BOOKS. It was a lovely book and I think fondly of it when ever I think of it.

Summary: Near Perfect 10 *...
Review: A cinderella like story for all of you out there who are not a perfect size 10!

Nellie Grayson is a "fat" 28 year old spinster who lives in Colorado 1896 and her life is devoted to caring for her penny pinching father and beautiful spoilt younger sister, Terel. Her life is turned upside down one day when Jace Montgomery, a handsome stranger arrives at their home in the town of Chandler. Jace is immediately struck by the kind, compassionate character of Nellie and confides in her of the grief he has been carrying for the past 4 years since the death of his wife in childbirth. Thus begins the courting of Nellie Grayson by Chandler's newly arrived most eligible bachelor.

A wonderful tale of true love and not lust, for a change. Nellie is the most selfless heroine you will meet and Jace a most kind and considerate man who sees Nellie as the true beauty she is. Terel is the most wicked nasty ... sister you could ever meet in a story. What more could you ask for? ...

Lealing

Summary: My First Jude Deveraux Read...Lovely!
Review: This was my first Deveraux book and it made me an instant fan. I'm overweight myself, and this was absolutely a moral booster! In addition to writing a wonderfully whimsical tale with everything (a frumpy under-appreciated heroine, her incredibly obnoxious family and fellow townspeople, and a dashing stranger that instantly recognizes the diamond in the rough that everyone has overlooked along), Deveraux tells this lovely tale within another story. It is through this that Deveraux achieves a highly comical and satisfying reaction with the aide of a cleverly important character that ties the two stories together. I recommend it for any female that has ever been accused of being fat and/or ugly...it will bring a guaranteed smile to your face.

Summary: Cute Cinderella story
Review: Heroine:  plump

Shallow, bitter, violently fat-phobic high society gal Berni has just gotten the shock of her life; which is to say, her death. Before she can go to heaven she is charged with a task. She must improve the life of one Nellie Grayson, a plump, loving spinster whose existence consists solely of caring for her selfish family members. In exchange for a ticket to paradise, Berni must assure that Nellie marries the handsome Jace Montgomery and has the life of happiness that she deserves.

However, Berni isn't interested in playing fairy godmother for poor Nellie, whom she assumes to be a superficial, selfish creature, and makes only a half-hearted attempt at her job before retreating into a "life" of luxury. But the spirit is in for a rude awakening when she checks on her charge and realizes not only that she judged Nellie unfairly but that she *gasp* is actually beginning to care for the poor put-upon girl. Suddenly Berni has to scramble to somehow repair the damage her own selfish irresponsibility has wrought.

Can Berni pull off this Herculean task and bring the two would-be lovers together, or are she and Nellie each doomed in their own way?

   What worked for me:

The concept of this story was a fun one. Who doesn't love to root for an underdog and hope that their nemeses get their much-deserved come-uppance?

And may I just say, thank heavens our heroine finally grew a spine!

Size-wise Nellie was plump, and Jace had no qualms about it.

What didn't work for me:

This is another case where the fat phobia experienced by the main characters was too modern a sentiment for the day. Despite the rise of the willowy Gibson girl, much admired actress Lillian Russell still reigned in that era and was far more zaftig than 160-odd-pound Nellie, who would have been about the same size as Marilyn Monroe at her heaviest.

There were some minor plot issues that stood out here and there, but I can't get into them without spoiling the story.

Overall:

Fans of Paranormals and American Historicals might like this Cinderella story. (Also see "Mountain Laurel", a novel about the hero's mother.)

Warning: this book has some weight loss and features one steamy scene.

If you liked "Wishes" you might also enjoy "The Hero's Best Friend", "The Bride of Willow Creek", "Beckett's Birthright", "A Country Christmas", "No Ordinary Princess", "The Bluebird and the Sparrow", or "Land of Dreams".

Summary: Wishes is a must read
Review: I read wishes so many times the cover fell off and then the book started falling apart and I had to tape it back together. Enough people have done plot summaries so I will just say the only problem I had with this book is that Jace loves Nellie no matter what her size. So why does she stay thin at the end? It is obviously still the magic at work and not Nellie herself. Although she might have lost a few pounds after not being depressed anymore. Great read. Loved it.

Summary: If you like Cinderella when you're a kid, this is for you!!
Review: Although this is not Ms. Deveraux's best of the best, it's very entertaining. As mentioned, the storyline came from a classic fairy tale, "Cinderella". However, with Ms. Deveraux's talent, everything, every content in this book is not ordinary. The story was set in the 19th century Colorado. Jace Montgomery, a very fine looking and very wealthy man, after being suffered from the death of his wife and son, he finally fell in love again with Nellie Grayson, a sweet, generous local girl in Chandler, Colorado. However, Nellie is not a typical slim, pretty girl just like her younger sister, Terel. She always thought of herself as an old maid and with a little extra weight, Nellie never ever thought that any man would look at her twice. But when she met Jace, the first man who made her feel like she's the world to him, Nellie started to hope that, maybe, maybe, she would have a happy ending marriage she always longed for. Well, sounds simple, isn't it? However, just like in Cinderella, Ms. Deveraux portraited Nellie's younger sister as Cinderella's wicked stepsister. And adding an untypical fairy godmother, a spirit from a modern day world, makes this book go pass above average. Although, I could predict how the story would go, I still found the book very entertaining. Both hero and heroine are adorable. And although, sometimes I think, Nellie's sister was a bit too 'wicked', I still love this book. Well, if you're Ms. Deveraux's fan, you will definitely don't want to miss this one. But if you're just looking around for something stress-free to read on the beach, this book is also for you.. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I do..

Summary: Wow!!
Review: This is definitely one of Judy's best books. I always come back to read it over and over again...I can never get tired of it. There are loads of witty dialogue, and well Jace is just plain cute and Nellie is a sweet heart. I fell in love with all the characters and it was gratifying to see somebody not so thin get the man!

Summary: A slice of heaven!
Review: Though not as sweeping and epic as some of Jude's other work's, 'Wishes' is just the right touch of sweetness and warmth.

Jace Montgomery is quite an endearing hero. Not so much a hero for saving a damsel in distress, but for simply freeing the beauty within the heroine.

Nellie Grayson is not your typical heroine. She's sweet, approachable and highly likeable. Sometimes the good girls do win.

With a supporting cast of appropiately vile characters, seeming insurmountable odds, and one Dupioni silk suited clad fairy godmother, how can you go wrong?

Summary: Not one of Deveraux's best
Review: The plot of this story was very weak. A kind of Cinderella story, it seemed well planned out but fell way short of its potential. I hate how Deveraux has to justify the hero's attraction to a woman who isn't a size 6. If you're going to use one, use one, but don't give excuses!! The ending made me do a double take...how can her sister try to ruin her life, and then end up perfectly happy? She doesn't have to be miserable, but justice demands that she get a little dose of reality! It's a good, fluffy lightweight story to read when you're bored. As far as passion, fun, happiness, and real romance goes...it's not on my reread shelf.

Summary: Mmmmmmmmmmm!
Review: This is one of those books that, after reading it, made me grin like a fool even though it was just a book.

I've been in love with the Montgomerys since Gavin but man, Jace takes the cake! He has got to be THEE sweetest, most caring, nicest hero I've ever read in a novel. And Nellie is one of my favorite heroines as well, with her sweet-natured personality. How would it be to have a friend like her, someone you know would never hurt you or let you down?? These two characters are dynamite and though it's a bit (ok, a LOT) cheesy, the whole time I was reading this book I had a warm and fuzzy little feeling in my heart.

Go Jace and Nellie!
