Summary: UGGGGG!
Review: I was looking for hot spice, something to make me look twice at what she was daring to write. Did I get it? NOPE! I got a sweet little romance of tattered souls, I didn't WANT that! I didn't pay for that. Look at Beyond Suduction for an amazing Emma Holly book, but skip this one if you're looking for a shock.

Summary: New for Ms. Holly - -and terrific!
Review: I'll admit, I was a bit reluctant to "delve" into this type of romance (since it's not my norm) - - but "Catching Midnight" will make you change your genre. Ms. Holly, known for her HOT, erotic reads, brings us a new dimension - -and does very well! I'll admit, if you are like me, and have never read a "vampire-type" romance, this may catch you by surprise. ...Give it a chapter and you'll be completely delighted. The story line is solid, the characters believable and I can't wait to see what happens in subsequent books!

Well done!

Summary: How disappointing...
Review: I'm not a fan of paranormal/fantasy fiction, save for a couple of Anne Rice's vampire stories, but I couldn't resist picking up a book from one of my favorite erotica authors. I was disappointed with this effort. Catching Midnight is a slow-paced, unfulfilling book in more ways than one. Holly's trademark eroticism -- the padding out, exquisite sexual tension between the characters -- is notably missing. It just doesn't have the boldness of Menage, the smoldering erotic scenes of Personal Assets or the incredible building of tension of Beyond Innocence and Beyond Seduction. Ironically, I read on Holly's web site that she began her writing career with fantasy fiction. However, I think she has a real knack for erotica and she shouldn't give up on that. She's still one of my favorite authors though. I've purchased several of her books, including Hunting Midnight, which, of course, is the follow-up to this one. I was told that Hunting Midnight is much better. If you haven't read Emma Holly, don't start out with this book. Read her smoldering efforts published by Black Lace or her historical/erotic romance efforts from Jove.

Summary: exciting paranormal historical romance
Review: In 1349, Gillian flees into the woods to escape the plague that apparently will kill her mother and younger brother. Shapeshifters Nim Wei and her former mentor and rival Auriclus finds Gillian. Both try to recruit the lass to join their pack. Though she prefers the glitter of materialism offered by Nim, she selects Auriclus and his caves. He changes her into one of them, which ages her into adulthood before he dumps her on a pack led by Ulric.

After spending time with the pack and knowing Ulric wants her as his queen, Gillian leaves though she cherishes the hunt and making love with her leader. Noble Aimery Fitz Clare catches a falcon that is actually Gillian in hiding from her pack, especially her angry former lover and leader. As Gillian falls in love with her gentle handler, she knows how much she endangers her beloved if her pack finds him.

This paranormal historical romance is a delight because the shapeshifters seem very real even when Gillian ages almost instantly. Gillian is a strong lead protagonist though her thirst for human knowledge is not fully explained. Aimery is a compassionate second son whose gentleness is strengthened by his courage. Readers will stay up till midnight finishing Emma Holly's wonderful tale.

Summary: Winner of the WordWeaving Award for Excellence
Review: In 1349, Gillian is cast into the streets of London without even a crust of bread when her mother and her younger brother show symptoms of the plague. As the city lies dying, Gillian flees to the woods where members of an ancient race discover her. They force her to choose between Auriclus' ways of the forests and Nim Wei's dominance of the cities. Gillian chooses not to be a queen, but the ways of the forests. That choice will forge her destiny.

In 1370 Gillian seeks her freedom, leaving behind the upyr and forging a bond with a peregrine falcon. Then Aimery Fitz Clare, second son to a noble house captures her. In his dreams, Gillian comes to him as a goddess, first to regain her sight which had been taken temporarily as a part of the falcon's training, and then fore more. Gillian decides that Aimery will be her guide back into the human world. But as their love grows, so does the dangerous jealousy from humans and upyr alike that threatens their every step.

This is my first sojourn into the novels by Emma Holly, but having experienced her wonderful story telling ability, it will not be the last. CATCHING MIDNIGHT is a marvelously gripping mix of passion, sensuality, paranormal settings, betrayal and triumph. The exquisite detailing of the ancient upyr with their earthy sensuality and their ability to live only in the moment sharply contrasts Gillian's desire for knowledge that reaches beyond experience. Despite those heart felt needs, however, Gillian is also an earthy, sensual woman who fears releasing the animal within just as much as Aimery fears remembering the butchery of the battlefields. As alike as they are different, Gillian and Aimery face considerable challenges and extraordinary danger with grace. Secondary characters are likewise dazzling in their complexity and depth, lending the novel an incredible richness. A sensual feast that readers will want to add to their keeper shelf, CATCHING MIDNIGHT earns the WordWeaving Award for Excellence.

Summary: Absolutely OUTSTANDING Paranormal
Review: In the year 1349, she was 10 years old - hardly a lifetime to know what it was like to be human when Gillian was turned into a upyr. Brought by her sire, Auriclus, to the woods where her body had shape-shifted to her perfect age, he left her to "live well and free" with others of her breed, the children of midnight, shapeshifting immortals who could run as both wolves and men. After some years spent with the pack of upyr's that were now her only family, she wanted knowledge of humans, her heart yearned for the world beyond.

After assuming the guise of a peregrine falcon, hoping to escape her immortal keepers, she inadvertently falls into the hands of Aimery Fitz Clare, a human, second son to a noble house, and a master falconer. Instinctively recognizing Aimery's kindness she is content to stay with him and let him unknowingly guide her back to a human world. It is with Aimery that she discovers more and more the knowledge she needs to be content - to discover that she has a heart and it has been captured by her love of Aimery. For Gilllian and Aimery, to embrace this forbidden romance, they must first survive the perils of her jealous brethren baring their fangs, and his obsessively unbalanced sister-in-law, before they can soar together in a perfect and glorious love.

Catching Midnight is a powerfully seductive romance. The raw emotions and the sizzling sex are skillfully woven into a very tender and touching love story. Numerous secondary characters are intertwined within to give you a thrilling page-turner of treacherous betrayals, envy, greed and mentally unbalanced obsessions. The paranormal world of upyr's was a new realm of which I had no prior knowledge, thatI found extremely interesting. I really liked this book and I most definitely recommend it - the pages flew and the sensuality will make your toes curl!

Summary: Truly Unfortunate
Review: It is really unfortunate how bad this book is. I have read almost all of Emma Holly's books and have enjoyed them all. I too was apprehensive about her foray into the realm of fantasy, but i was still excited because it way by one of my favorite authors. However, I was extremely disappointed with the story that seemed to go no where fast! I couldn't even finish the book. It usually isn't a good sign, when after just a few chapters you start to flip thru the book for the 'juicy' parts, which were woefully tame compared to her other stories. Needless to say, i'm rethinking putting in my preorder for the sequel Hunting Midnight.
