Rating: Summary: Squeeze your heart and make you laugh Review: I fell in love with Ian and Elizabeth. When the book ended, I didn't want to let them go.Judith McNaught made me laugh and cry, often within the same paragraph. This is a keeper you will want to re-read over and over again.
Rating: Summary: Pure Heaven! Review: In ALMOST HEAVEN, Judith McNaught created a courageous yet vulnerable heroine (Elizabeth, Countess of Havenhurst) & a distant yet longing-to-be-loved hero (Ian Thornton, Marquess of Kensington), added with some of J.M's usual spices of misunderstandings & complicated twisters - which made this book one of the most exhilirating story I've read by far. I won't dilly-dally on summarizing the story for new readers since the Amazon Editorial Book Description, Synopsis & other book reviewers here did a pretty good job in covering those details. However, I'd like to add just how much I enjoyed ALL the secondary characters. To name a few of my favorites: Ian's charming yet nosy great aunts, Horstene & Charity. His heartwarming grandfather (Duke of Stanhope) - Ian's eventual acceptance & forgiveness towards him and the old mans reaction to his long awaited grandson will truly quench your heart. Ian's honorable Uncle, Duncan & the ever high almighty Ms. Lucinda Throckmorton-Jones, oh and don't u dare call her otherwise (geez! lol) . But most of all, I favored Jordan & Alexandra (Duke & Duchess of Hawthorne). They are both the H/H in Judith McNaught's "SOMETHING WONDERFUL", which I read and is also one of my top favs book. It was a delight to read updates of Jordan & Alexandra together with the Dowager Duchess of Hawthorne as well as Roddy Castair. I suggest you read S.W. first then this book. ALMOST HEAVEN is sorta like a sequel to that (Although in S.W, Elizabeth & Ian wasn't mentioned at all). But I think it will spark an additional interest if you know the romance of the secondary characters here in A.H.. You will appreciate their apprearances more. I know there are couple of readers here in Amazon who complained about Elizabeth's "decision" when she believed her half brother (Robert) & doubted Ian. Thing is, she really didn't know Ian all that much compared to his half brother, who she knew all her life. Also, Robert have always been nice to her. He never mistreated her nor abused her. In fact, he did take care of her in some ways however misguided it might have been. So I think Elizabeth's initial response to Robert's tales was more realistic. Mostly, Fear & anger towards Ian then doubts & confusions follows. However, don't be discourage as Judith McNaught once again overturned this bad choice into an amusing & sighing conclusion that will leave you smirking and thinking about it for hours afterwards. Overall, this book is exuberant & riveting. A must READ & A must HAVE in your collection - As I sure do.
Rating: Summary: 5 stars???? Review: I highly doubt it. This story was just so lame and predictable and cliched that I actually found it very tedious trying to finish reading it. It got 5 stars for what? I thought Elizabeth was so dense that I was actually almost annoyed with Ian for falling for her like a rock in the first place. She doesn't have the spirit of the other heroines in McNaught's other novels. I found a lot more scenes that confirmed her beef-headedness than her supposed sense and wit, and I'm surprised that Ian didn't see past her beautiful green eyes, blond hair, and "scholarly handwriting" to realize that he indeed married a ninny. Not to mention that she couldn't prepare liquid coffee to save her soul. As a whole, the plot and characters were just terrible! I don't recommend this book at all.
Rating: Summary: One of my Top 5 romances Review: This is my favorite JM. Ian Thornton is the ultimate hero. I love him. Always have, always will. Elizabeth is just a wonderful heroine, down-to-earth and definitely Ian's match. She's not one of those annoying brats that so frequent romance novels. The love between them is so amazingly real. I loved the reference to PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (definitely one of my favorite books ever!). Also try "A Kingdom of Dreams", JM's sole medieval, another favorite of mine.
Rating: Summary: This book will give you cavities Review: Prior to reading Almost Heaven, I was intrigued by so many readers gushing how 'intelligent" the protaginist Elizabeth was. She's NOT. So she says a few politically correct statements of Galileo and prefers Shakespeare to Marlowe, but she makes no reasoned judgements or even strong opinions. Elizabeth is truly idealistic;she has no weaknesses. She is so sickeningly sweet and very 1-dimensional. She is gorgeous as a supermodel to top it off. Some have praised that this book has good secondary characters. There is this butler Benter who is like best friends with his employer Elizabeth. He tries to be adorable and has this fanatic sense with mystery novels. But i wish he was left out; he just made me roll my eyes in annoyance Ian is this supergenius who can speedread like a computer and has the talent to become a Vegas whale. I've read this after Whitney, My Love. seems like Judith McNaught uses the same seduction techniques. Overall, this Almost Heaven has too much sugar; I prefer the salt-licketty romps of Whitney.
Rating: Summary: the best hero yet! Review: Ian is wonderful! JM really puts this hero in a real light - he is charming, yet doesn't totally ignore his feelings for Elizabeth once he realizes how much she means to him. And Elizabeth is so strong - she fights for Ian until he realizes he can't live without her. She doesn't hide and wait for him to decide. I loved this book and hated to turn the last page - it is definitely a keeeper!
Rating: Summary: The perfect introduction to Judith McNaught Review: I've read this book again and again. I've read just about all of Judith McNaught's work, but by far, Almost Heaven is just that - Heaven. A young woman's pride and courage. A man's distrust and boredom with women. These two characters are thrust into one another's lives and it is one hilarious "Fred & Lucy" moment after another. I really think that Almost Heaven is a book to buy and to keep. I gave mine away, and asked for it back- Twice! Thank you Judith, and keep 'em coming!
Rating: Summary: 5 stars are not enough... Review: Never a book affected me the way this book did. Of all McNaught's works, in my opinion, this is her best. I love the settings: from London to the Scottish highlands, the dialogue, the story.... Elizabeth Cameron is one of my favorite heroines of all time. As for Ian Thornton, let's just say that there is nothing ordinary about this man.
Rating: Summary: A perfection Review: _Almost Heaven_ is in my Top 3 favorite romances of all time. I love how JM uses both humor and heartwrenching emotions in this book. The love and relationship between the hero and the heroine are very passionate, powerful and beautifully written. Elizabeth Cameron, an English beauty and a countess, is definitely the perfect heroine for this book. She's intelligent, witty, spirited, passionate, humorous, courageous and honorable. She never let the scandal (caused by her attraction to the hero, whom society deemed unsuitable) or her frugal uncle to dampen her spirits or prevent her from keeping Havenhurst (her ancestral home - which is on the verge of being put on the auctioneer's block). She's also very real and NOT entirely flawless. Ian Thornton is not a hero. He is "THE" hero. To me, he defines heroism. He's just magnificent that I always wish I was Elizabeth. He has no equal. There are so many wonderful scenes in this book, and also many wonderful secondary characters such as Lucinda (Elizabeth's duenna), John Marchman (a shy, wonderful man, who is one of Elizabeth's suitors), Bentner (Elizabeth's butler, who is addicted to mysteries) and more. _ALMOST HEAVEN_ is the ultimate reading experience, and another book I would recommend is _A KINGDOM OF DREAMS_, which is a medieval.
Rating: Summary: Almost Heaven Review: Almost Heaven is my favorite Mcnaught/romance. It has one of my favourite themes of all time: Lost love. Ian Thornton is the best hero McNaught ever created, IMO. Strong, intelligent, gorgeous, forceful, dynamic, Scot....The heroine, Elizabeth, is one of the most beautifully written heroine ever - inside out. I love how she never shrinks away from challenges, her intelligence, her knack for bargaining, her green thumb, her strength and more. I agree with one of the reviewers, JM should return to writing historicals.
