Rating: Summary: Its almost heaven Review: The name of the book says quite a lot. It is an excellent read, one of McNaughts best. You can't help but fall in love with the characters. Elizabeth and Ian are perfect for one another. Its also good to hear from Alex and Jordan again. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to start reading romance.
Rating: Summary: Even better than Whitney Review: This was my first trip into Judith McNaught's historical novels, and I was very glad I made the attempt. As I've said in other reviews, historical is not my favorite because I get really tired of all the earls, dukes, baronesses, etc. Just say their name, and that's good enough for me. lol But I totally fell in love with Ian. I loved him even more than Clayton from Whitney, My Love, which can get me in trouble since there are some serious Clayton lovers out there. Sorry if I offend anybody.Take the time to get this book. You will not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: ...heart-wrenching and poignant... Review: ALMOST HEAVEN is my favorite JM historical romance novel. Most of her romance titles (e.g., WHITNEY, MY LOVE, ONCE AND ALWAYS, UNTIL YOU) are based on excessive misunderstandings, and the mental and internal conflicts that go on between the main characters. I can?t get through one of her books without shouting at the characters and telling them to get a clue! JM?s novels can be very frustrating to read. Also, they can be too predictable. However, she always writes wonderful and unforgettable endings that make up for all the frustration that happens along the way. I thought that the hero and heroine in this novel were somewhat unique compared to other JM couples. I don?t like to compare, but in this instance I feel compelled to do just that. I fell in love with Ian almost immediately. Unlike other JM male protagonists in her Regency novels, he didn't have a mistress! During his first encounter with Elizabeth, Ian acted as the cool and mysterious man who displayed more wisdom and experience than his innocent and younger counterpart. (With the talent and skill of Ms. Judith McNaught, she weaved this part of the story perfectly!) Ian was beguiled by Elizabeth?s mind and not her looks. After the special interlude, their relationship was warped into this wild adventure of love, trust, and betrayal...and then of personal war that led to everlasting love and devotion. There are so many magnificent scenes in this story. One of my favorites was the rendezvous at the cottage. It was so incredibly sweet and very dramatic and emotional -- typical JM style. The story is heart-wrenching and poignant. I couldn't get enough of Ian and Elizabeth. The book is a romance masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: Not one of Mrs. McNaught's best Review: I know alot of people may disagree with me, but I was quite disappointed with Mrs. McNaught's Almost Heaven. I found the story be a bit unbelievable, the characters somewhat uniform, and the whole love plot to be stagnet. I didn't enjoy the approach Judith took with her previous characters: The Duke and Duchess of Hawthrone were former shadows of their orginal personalities. I also found her new heroine and hero to be shallow and undescript. There really was no depth with their relationship. I must convey that it was indeed sad for me to write this review since Judith McNaught has always been one my favorite writers.
Rating: Summary: This is not a review for "Almost Heaven" Review: This is a review for "Whitney, My Love", I don't know how it ended up under "Almost Heaven". I'm sorry for the confusion it may have caused. This book made me feel so much! I love the story, the characters, the emotions that moved them. Because this book is about emotion, pure and raw. I have read that some people are disturbed by the "rape" scene, and I respect everybody's opinion, but I would like to share my views on this. You need to look at the actions-the emotions- that led to it. He had been in love with Whitney for a long time, he had been patient and tried hard to win her love, with no apparent success, she keeps rejecting him and favoring Paul, who is totally unworthy of her. Then he is led to believe that Whitney is not the innocent he thinks she is, and that she has been playing him for a fool all this time. Blinded by jealousy, he kidnaps Whitney and takes her to his state with the purpose of ravishing her. But even then, he was going to stop before committing the "act". It was Whitney herself who encouraged him, not knowing what he was about. So he does it, but the regrets, the pain, the desolation he feels afterwards, when he thinks he has lost her forever because of his actions, made me feel as sorry for him as for Whitney. This is actually one of my favorite scenes in the book, and not because I'm in favor of rape (all the contrary), but because it is so full with emotions (love, passion, jealousy, regrets, pain.) I suppose everybody have a different oppinion about this, but regardless of your sentiments on this scene, I think the book is great. Yes, Clayton is arrogant, stubborn and in more than one occasion jumps to the wrong conclusion, but he is also tender, loving, protective and is madly in love with Whitney. A masterful romance novel. I definitively recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Just Breathtakingly romantic as they've said..and more! Review: How could I stopped twice to think wheater I should or shouldn't've purchase the novel is beyond me. It is just one of the best romantic novel I have ever read. The first of Judith's masterpiece I read was Until You which is not as heart wrenching and as FUNNY (I tell you this one is so funy that I nearly woke my husband while I read it he was sleeping). So, Here I am now cannot wait to review it. The hero Ian Thronton will just melt your heart with all of his romantic schemes, and heroine Elizabeth Cameron would double-up your stomach with her witty, smart charm. Read it... believe me it is that goooooooddd. Be prepared though.. to bit your lips if you read it in public transport!
Rating: Summary: beautiful! Review: this is probably the best book that mcnaught has ever written! the story was captivating and the pacing was good too! once i started reading it, i couldn't put the book down.
Rating: Summary: The best of McNaught Review: If you have never read a Judith McNaught book (you're missing out) this is the one to read. This is a great book to read when there are no distractions around - you will find you can't put it down! I fell in love with Elizabeth and Ian and their story. From the moment they meet, the chemistry sizzles. I found myself laughing out loud and cheering their triumphs. I found myself saddened by their despair. Judith has such a way with character development that the reader usually feels as if they are old friends. I have read most of Judith's books over and over again but this is the one I have read the most. The story touches me as much now after many reads as it did the first time I read it.
Rating: Summary: Incredibly touching. Review: I now believe that it is impossible for Judith McNaught to write a bad book. Although JM doesn't need any more stars, I thought I would give her five more just because this book was soooooooo beautiful. Thank you, Judith.
Rating: Summary: My favorite romance novel. Review: Almost Heaven is my favorite romance because of the two beautiful people who are most definitely in love in it... two beautiful people who strive to be together despite all that tries to separate them. In a lot of romance novels, you have a hero who is afraid to love the heroine and won't admit it 'til the end. In others, you have a heroine who is gratingly feisty and won't listen to reason. It's quite tiring to read about couples who fight each other to the death, then in the end somehow manage to be 'in love'. In Almost Heaven you have Ian Thornton, a hero who is unique even if he possesses qualities common to men of his kind. Ian is cynical, dark and tough...but he is also open to loving and isn't afraid to fight for his Elizabeth. Ian is one of the reasons why AH is my favorite because when you look into his words and actions, you can tell how much he would do for her. Even when was cold to her in Scotland or wrathful to her that night in his study after the trial...everything he did or said was a result of his feelings for her*. As a whole, I find it refreshing to find a hero who is very strong, very intelligent and very much in love. Isn't that what being a romance novel hero is about? And Elizabeth is the perfect soul mate for this amazing man. You really get to see her grow in the story, and get to appreciate her character's development. She started of as very young and sheltered, making great mistakes that made me want to cringe...yet she never was afraid to admit when in the wrong. Even when sinned against, she always tried to see things from her opponents' point of view, which is very mature and rare in most romance novel heroines. She's also very level headed in a sense that while most women of her time had little to think about but the next ball gown, Elizabeth main responsibility was managing her family estate, Havenhurst. Being resourceful and kind hearted are mere bonuses, making her the kind of woman you envy because of her beautiful appearance...and the kind of heroine you empathize with (and root for) because of her inner beauty. :) Unsurprisingly, this amazing couple engages in the most touching, heartfelt dialogue ever to grace the pages of a romance novel. Their dancing together is just one of many scenes I reread often. Their beautiful wedding night, the tension between them in Scotland for the first time (I loved Ian's frustrated attempts in denying Elizabeth's appeal ^.~) , Ian's remorse in finding out the truth and the way he made it up to her...and not* to mention the most heartfelt fight scene and the subsequent reconciliation that followed it. For me, Almost Heaven is the ultimate romance novel experience. I always read this book when I want to have a good laugh, a good cry, or whether I simply want to feel good inside. And it never fails to deliver the best, which is why I keep coming back to it. :)
