Rating: Summary: It Just Doesn't Get Any Better Than This Review: I delayed reading the epilogue for a full day because I just didn't want this story to end. It took me as long to read 2 chapters as it did 30. It is one of those stories, so perfect, that one is left with a sense of loss, of melancholy, when finished. Sheer perfection.
Rating: Summary: McNaught does it again! Review: While I really do think that most of McNaught's books disserve 5 stars, this one is amongst her best. I don't like it quite as much as "Whitney my Love" or "kingdom of Dreams" for the simple fact that there are certain parts of it that I skip when I re-read it.Elizabeth Cameron was ruined by the advances made by Ian Thornton. A few years later, orphaned and alone, and by an accident of fate, Elizabeth is thrust into his hands again, this time by the design of an uncle who wants to pawn her off to whoever will take her. Elizabeth swallows her pride and goes to meet Ian, only to learn that her invitation was an oversight. Ian and Elizabeth immediatly feel the attraction that pulled them together so many years before but pride and misunderstanding keep them apart. Only when Ian learns the truth about what Elizabeth has been through as a result of his advances does he dare to overcome his own pride and do what he needs to do to heal old wounds and marry the woman of his dreams! But the story isn't over here. More miscommunications (a trend with ms. McNaught) drives them desperately apart and it takes Elizabeth discovering the desperate results of her actions to come back to him in time to save the day...and maybe just in time to bring them back together again...forever. The characters were great, as usual. The only thing about this book I don't like is that I always skip the parts where she goes to meet the other prospective husbands when I re-read the novel. Still a great read!!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic characters Review: Ian Thornton was simply one of the best romance heroes. It was so refreshing to see that he accepted his love for Elizabeth right from the start. I also liked the fact that both characters were willing to swallow their pride in several instances to fight for their love. This book was witty and romantic, and the historical inaccuracies, while they exist, were not jarring. The breakfast scene in Scotland was hilarious.
Rating: Summary: Breathtaking! Review: I cannot add much to what has already been said by more than 100 other readers, but I wanted to register my vote that this is one of the best romance novels I have ever read. It totally absorbed me for nearly a whole weekend, so enthralled was I by these wonderful characters that seem such an unlikely pair but fight so hard to make it work. I cannot remember the last romance I read that made me cry, but this one got me. This is the first JM novel I have read, but it will not be the last.
Rating: Summary: *Sigh* Review: There are so many reasons why this book touched me. I loved seeing Jordon and Alex from Something Wonderful... I absolutely fell in love with Ian and found his unconditional love for Elizabeth to be a truly beautiful thing. Judith painted Ian as such an awesome man... faults and all, that I could almost believe that a man such as him really does exist somewhere out there. As always, the love scenes were tender, tender, tender and brought tears to my eyes. Judith even took their first kiss and wrote it into such a magnificent moment that I was actually shaken when I finished reading it. I was hurt at Elizabeth's treatment of Ian after her brother came back for her... even angered, but in some ways I could understand why she did what she did. He was, after all, her brother. I guess when a story evokes such strong emotions in you, its gotta be an excellent book. I don't know if Judith could top this book... this and A Kingdom of Dreams are my absolute favourites out of all her books... but the rest are amazing too.
Rating: Summary: I didn't want it to end!!! Review: I love all of McNaught's work for their wit and "gosh wouldn't it be great if this actually happened?" stories, but this one, by far, is my favorite of her historical romances. I really liked Elizabeth and Ian's relationship, as well as their personal character traits. I love Judith McNaught, but sometimes I feel as if her heroines and heros are just duplicates of each other, only with different names. Reading about Elizabeth and Ian turned out to be a treat! The best part of this book is the two main characters and the tender love they share with each other. I instantly liked Elizabeth because she had "spirit" but it wasn't an overwhelming or played-up trait. She was serene, calm, and graceful, with intelligence and pride that I totally admired and approved. I absolutely loved the way she silently and calmly fights for the man she loves. You will fall completely in love with Ian (I even became a little of jealous of Elizabeth for snatching him up!) that it'll leave you sighing and wondering when YOUR Ian will show up! Ian, too, was refreshingly different than the usual "reformed rake," and I much enjoyed that fact that JM didn't throw a mistress into the story. The "giving up the mistress as the sure sign of love" scenario is a little tiring. Ian, like Elizabeth, was a calm, contemplative man who made my heart honestly melt with the tender things he says to Elizabeth. I liked the fact that he truly loved her, all through the book, and didn't randomly marry her for her looks or the challenge. He was understanding, his actions and reactions that of any normal man in his situation, and for once, we don't see a man with an incredible temper; just one who has been hurt in the past and is afraid of being hurt again. Upon finishing the book, they've both easily became my favorite hero/heroine combination. For one, their relationship wasn't fraught with misunderstanding after misunderstanding that usually leaves me nearly screaming at the stupidity of the characters on the pages. He is not the usual controlling husband, and Elizabeth is not the usual rebellious wife, and I liked that combination. For once, there was a little trust in the relationship!! They both have pride, but I love the way they are able to forgoe their pride for the sake of the relationship, as if they understand how silly it is to hold pride above love, as a lot of romance heroes/heroines tend to do. By all means, they do not have a perfect relationship, but they let their love for each other accept and forgive their flaws. The only part I can complain about was the reappearance of Jordan and Alexandra from "Something Wonderful." I feel that Elizabeth and Ian's story could stand alone, and that seeing Jordan and Alex again, though delightful, kind of took away from Elizabeth and Ian's own special story. Overall, I felt that this was a more mature book, with truer, more mature feelings in it than other JM books. The emotion was so real and intense and raw and I loved witnessing true love evolve. Ian and Elizabeth will make you believe in soul-mates and that there is no better healer, and no stronger power than love.
Rating: Summary: Can McNaught do any better????? Review: This was a beautiful story. I fell in love with Elizabeth and Ian from the beginning. Ian is the type of man most women dream of he makes you want something wonderful and he says some of the sweetest things. It is one of those books that makes you say "ahhhhh" and dream of your very own Ian. I really can't say enough wonderful things about this book!!!! It is really good. Buy it, read it!!!!! I promise that you will enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: An absolute treasure Review: I picked up this worn-out book at the library and took it as a sign that it must be good. It was incredible. I have dark circles under my eyes from lack of sleep. I could not put this book down. This is my first McNaught book and I have to say, as an avid reader, this is one of the best books I have ever read, and I read everything - not just romances. I just ordered my own copy from amazon, but I'll wait until it arrives before I return the library's copy. I hate parting with it.
Rating: Summary: Judith is the ultimate! Review: This book (as are all of Judith's books) is simply wonderful. I have read it at least three times. Nobody beats Judith in historical romance. She is the ultimate, and this charmingly sensual book proves it. Her characters are so engrossing, so deep and moving, you cannot help but be utterly enthralled until you drink the last drop of her words. And then, you want to start it all over again. When I die, I want to come back as Judith McNaught.
Rating: Summary: I keep re reading this over and over Review: I love this book, it's amazing, as are all of Judith McNaught's historical works. Elizabeth and Ian are so lovable yet incouragable at the same time. You want to ring their necks, and hug them at the same time. I read this book time and time again, and this, and something wonderful, are my favorites.
