Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: a well-rounded book Review: This is a well-balanced romance and I wish I can give it a 4 1/2 stars. There are many 'faults' in this book but still I give it a high rating just because of the general well-roundedness and good editing. The faults are that the situation is highly improbable and the characters' reactions, especially, hard to understand. And Portia, the heroine, is soooo frustrating. I just CANNOT understand why she feels what she does at the end and there was a point where I really believed that Jo Beverley was going to give the first bad ending in romances' history. But everything of course still worked out, though I still don't understand some parts. But maybe that's the beauty of JO Beverley's writing: at a point where most romance writers succumb to idealistic declarations of mutual love, she keeps on digging at the problems until they are completely resolved, if not removed. I loved the character of Bryght, though! :-) I just charming characters. Can't say the same for Portia, unfortunately.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Just Keeps Getting Better Review: This is another of Jo Beverley novels at her best. It is the story of Portia St. Claire and Bryght Malloren. She who hates gaming of any kind, seeing it as the disgrace that ultimately killed her father and the seemingly downfall it appeared to be heading towardsher brother. Bryght, seemed like another gamester and hawk as well, but that couldn't stop her feelings for him, nor would she let anyone, including herself, know of them. The story, as all of Jo Beverley's novels, moves at a wonderful pace, fleshes out the characters wonderfully, and leaves you always wanting more! I will say though, that Portia rather infuriated me at times for taking her time in admitting to her love for Bryght. He was just too perfect for me to have any doubts whatsoever, in spite of the gaming aspect! Oh, I cannnot wait for Rothgar's story - hope it comes soon! This one, like all of Jo Beverley's novels, definitely a keeper.
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Not up to par with the series.... Review: This is the 2nd book in JB's 'Malloren Series'; its my 3rd since I've read them out of order. It would really be best to read 'My Lady Notorious' first due to a lot of references in this book to things that happened in the first one. Now, all of that being said, I was really disappointed in this book. I just loved 'My Lady Notorious' & 'Secrets of the Night'.... they had both heros & heroines that I could really enjoy. Even though I didn't start out liking Chasity Ware from the first one, her personality was totally explained, understandable, & made me come to really respect her. Not so with Portia in this book. I can't, for the life of me, figure out why Bryght fell in love with her. She was rude, unappreciative & very insulting through the entire book - right down to the page when she admitted she loved him & couldn't live without him (at the very end). Although it was attempted to explain why she acted like she did, I didn't go for it. Without telling the story, she made sacrifices for a brother that was worthless & blamed Bryght - however, it was only thru his actions that her life wasn't REALLY horrible! I like a book that at least has some affection and/or fun between the hero & heroine - that at least have a reason for falling in love. Although Bryght was an excellent hero, Portia ruined this one for me. Bryght's the reason this one got the 3rd star! lol
