Summary: You've got to read this one FIRST
Review: This is the start of MANY great stories. It is a must -read -first type of deal, for although the rest of the novels are great, reading this one first will give you the backgrond to enjoy them to the fullest. The SECOND MUST READ is "Something Wonderfull". THIRD, "Once and Always". If you read them in this order, you will knw all you need to know to appreciate EVERY character in every book you read thereafter. I gave this book a 9 because Ms. McNaught delayed the "happy-ending" for too long of a stretch for my taste. I was like, "come on already, what else could go wrong?" I loved it nonetheless. The first book I read by J.M. was "Almost Heaven", and I HAD to read more of her work. After I realized the characters were all connected, I was delighted, ergo- my "List of Order". Although I did not follow that order, it's how I'd recommend after reading the rest. Who knows, maybe I'll go back and read them in order myself.

Summary: Lovely
Review: This book is one of the reasons I wish we would follow the lead of some other countries and not categorize books into genres. Too many people have missed out on this glorious book because they have a preconceived notion of Romance and they thumb their noses at it. This is one of my all time favorite books. I closed this book with a sigh and a light feeling in my heart. McNaught's writing is thoughtful and intelligent. So much so that even when she gets a trifle schmaltzy, it is not offensive. Her character development and plotting is paced wonderfully and her continuity is excellent. She has just enough attention to historical detail to make it accurate, but, not overwhelming to the story. Her characters are multi-dimensional. The book has a flow and a cadence that most writers miss today in their rush to get their next book on the shelves. Judith McNaught could make even the most diehard snob who refuses to give romances a try a convert

Summary: Could use
Review: This book, could use a little brushing up. I don't think that it was that great

Summary: one of my favorite because....
Review: She's smart, beautiful, and funny. He's rich, handsome, and titled (a duke no less). Although the happy ending was a given, there were just enough rough spots on the road to true love to make the story challenging. For those of us who like a little naughtiness, the following incidents occur in the book: spanking (I'll let you guess who spanks whom); rape (heart wrenching, but at least they love each other); and blackmail (hey, it's the thought that counts). I hope everyone enjoys the book despite its dark moments

Summary: "Whitney My Love" gets two thumbs-up!
Review: "Whitney My Love" is McNaught at her finest! She taps into every emotion the reader has, and than some. The main characters have great depth, and the storyline is well written. This book is sure to keep the reader captivated to the last page. I give it two enthusiastic thumbs-up

Summary: The best ugly duckling story since the original!
Review: The transformation of an ugly duckling into a swan is an old theme. However, when the ugly duckling meets a dark stranger the story takes flight. Whitney and Clayton's story is love at it's tumultuous best. Filled with twists, turns, and gut wrenching scenarios, this book grabs hold of your heart so you can't put it down until the end. It has our highest reccomendation...and there is even a sequel

Summary: If you read no other romance novel, read this!
Review: There's something to be said for a writer who can write a bestselling romance without stooping to Danielle Steel-type writing. Judith McNaught has all the magic of Merlin in spinning this tale between two strong-willed, flawed characters. Both Whitney and Clayton are well-crafted, scenes are crisp and believable, supporting cast is engaging. "Whitney, My Love" is written for the intelligent reader, whether a veteran of the genre or newbie.

Summary: Heart warming, irresistable. I fell in love with Clayton.
Review: The characters are given such life, and such depth. I experienced almost the same sort of feelings as Whitney. Her very character is so real and heart warming. An incredible book. From page two onwards - I was hooked

Summary: Yes, it really is that bad.
Review: They say everyone makes mistakes, and JM made hers with this horrid book. I put off reading it for years, despite liking her other books so well (Kingdom of Dreams, Perfect and Almost Heaven are sooo wonderful!) because of the mixed reviews here. But since they averaged out more positive than negative, I finally gave it a chance and read with an open mind. But I could not have disliked this story more had I tried!

I wish I had a new take on what all is wrong with this story, but I can't say anything that hasn't already been said in the numerous one-star reviews here. I'll just say to take the time to read them all, as they are very accurate about the facts of the story. Now, it's how you take those facts that determine whether or not you will like this book. If you think that beating, rape, emotional abuse and betrayal can all be overcome and true, lasting love still result, then you may find this to be a "romantic" story. I just don't. Clayton did nothing to redeem himself in my eyes, but apparently McNaught was operating under the love is blind (and deaf) theory of romance when she had Whitney take him back. In my head, this relationship will not stand the test of time - Clayton is not able to trust enough to let that happen. I like to think that he eventually caught a wasting venereal disease from a mistress and threw himself off a cliff as an easy way out, hopefully while Whitney was still young enough to find a good man.

Congratulations, JM: you now have the distinction of having created the "Worst Hero Ever" in all my years of reading.

Summary: A Perfect Romance NOVEL
Review: Just have to add my 2 cents....
My first point is that this was, for me, an amazing book from the first page: captivating, compelling, and endearing. Judith McNaught transforms the typical hero and heroine and endows them with major foibles AND graces. This is a book about transformations, about personal growth, about forgiveness, and about how we hurt (intentionally and otherwise) the very people we love the most. I thought the writing was fresh and detailed just right---I loved all the detail about the wedding day, for example. Yet, for me, it was not overly detailed. When I read an historical romance, I want the gist of the time period without being overly concerned about every point (Diana Gabaldon's fifth Outlander book, is IMO, way too detailed). Like another reader pointed out, this is supposed to be escapist fiction.

Which brings me to my second point: Thank you to the astute reviewer who pointed out that this is a NOVEL. I am willing to suspend my disbelief about certain issues....the near-rape scene, yes, was brutal, but it is no worse than any scene in a James Patterson thriller. I think people who are commenting on Clayton's "anger management" issues (while being correct) are so busy applying 21st century self-help terms to characters who are PURPOSELY written to be in a love/hate relationship that they miss the point.

So I come down on the side of "loving" this book...I couldn't put it down, and can't wait to try some other Judith McNaught books.
