Summary: In Defense of the Novel
Review: I have noticed while reading the reviews that many people were concerned with the rape scene within the novel. Be warned, it is there and if it bothers you, don't read the novel. However, I don't believe that anyone could disagree that Judish McNaught has a writing style all her own and completely incredible. The usage of dialogue in the novel is so tear-wrenching, hilarious, and dramatic that it helps the novel and the writer's style out incredibly. The rape scene, although I don't condone it, added to the book. It made the story only that much more... the word to use would be suspenseful. It really makes you wonder whether they'll end up together in the end...

Summary: RAPE SCENE-not needed even considering era
Review: I feel that the rape scene was horrible and totally out of character for Clayton. It seems that it is portraying the idea that he was driven to do it by some uncontrollable jealous rage, implying that he cared for her so deeply and was so jealous of the idea of her being with anybody else. His passion was so high that he did such a violent thing. Its like a fantasy with some women, I guess. But, it totally took me by surprise. We didn't have to see his virility by having him rape her! And the number of times he didn't trust her and didn't bother to clarify the numerous misunderstandings? He was ridiculous. And the way he talked to her? It was ludicrous. TAKE THE RAPE SCENES OUT! I DON'T CARE WHAT ERA IT IS. (this has nothing to do with the author's writing style, which is excellent and probably very under-rated) 5 Stars for her superb writing and eloquent dialogue.

Summary: An exceptional book, well-written and beautiful!
Review: I am a fan of romance novels only during the summer months when I want something fun and fast to read. But you don't have to like romance novels to fall in love with this book. I consider this novel to be one of my favorites of all time. It is beautifully written and really gives you a sense of the characters' misunderstood relationship. I love the characters and the engrossing story. It should be on everyone's "Must-Read" list! I have read all her other novels and although they are all good, this one is an amazing and exceptional classic. I have re-read it numerous times and will continue re-reading it...

Summary: The frist novel I read, The best book in my memory.
Review: I don't like to read book , but when I read this book I can't stop. I review for more than 6 times in one year. MN is very wonderful writer as she born to be. I want to say " thank you" to her for writing this book.

Summary: A Bitter Regency Romance
Review: This is a really good book to read as an example of how NOT to have a relationship. The hero, Clayton, is rude and abusive to the herionne, Whitney. He treats her like an object, verbally abuses her, rapes her, and as a grand finale, she has to beg HIM to take her back. WTF? While the writing was decent, the rape scene in this book really turned me off from the book. Clayton was supposed to be the hero, for god's sake! Heroes don't rape the heroinne. I don't care what the era was. It was inappropriate behaviour then, and it certainly is inappropriate behaviour now. The two have a sick relationship based on control. There is no real emotion binding them. This is a better book for psych majors to study than for romance readers to enjoy.

Summary: Still McNaught's best.
Review: I'm here to defend this author and this book. I think JM is one of the best and that this is still her best work to date. I reread it periodically and have worn out several copies.

NEWS FLASH.....Keep in mind the time period of this novel. Women were not liberated. Whitney was given much freedom...by Clayton, when legally he already owned her. The fact that he gave her time to fall in love with him and wanted to marry her spoke volumes about the depth of his character and the type of relationship he wanted with her. He did not force himself on her until he himself, hopelessly in love with her, thought that she had betrayed him. Was he right to do this? No,...but he thought he was justified at the time. Was he devastated by his own behavior? Absolutely...with only himself to blame.

The verbal dueling of these characters and the development of their personalities have, in my opinion, been unequaled to date, and thoroughly delightful. Conflict makes a romance an interesting read. A happy ending makes it an enjoyable read. This book has both.

(Note: If the "rape" in this book offends you, please avoid Rosemary Rogers' earlier work.)

Summary: The best romance I have ever read!
Review: I've read many of the reviews note the rape scene in this book. I agree with them, rape is not romance. But I also believe this is truly the best book I've ever read and will re-read it over and over again! Are all of you General Hospital fans who loved Luke and Laura putting down this book?

Summary: Outstanding!
Review: This is the first book I read by Judith McNaught and this is the book that sold me on her style of writing. I have read this book so many times I could probably repeat it verbatim. This book is outstanding and nothing short of it.
